Summer Term 2017 Newsletter - Year 2

Welcome to our first newsletter for the Summer Term.
Last term, the children had a great time learning all about the Titanic in history and wrote some
fantastic debates as to who was to blame! The children also learned about the author Julia Donaldson
in English as well as looking at ‘A diary of a wombat’ and had a go at writing their own versions. They
developed their numeracy skills in mathematics lessons with topics such as telling the time and finding
fractions of amounts. They have really impressed me with their determination and how much they like
to ‘self-challenge’ with some very tricky mathematics questions. As you can tell, they have been
working very hard and showing great enthusiasm along the way. Excellent progress has been made.
Well done Year 2!
Our topic for the first half of the Summer Term will be The Seaside.
Our learning in geography will to be compare Bentley with seaside
locations, looking at physical and human features that make the two
locations different. Our Art will be linked to our Topic as we will be
learning how to produce landscape paintings and collages in the style
of famous landscape artists. We will
look at Monet, Homer and Turner and
compare their different styles. We
will also be going on an exciting trip to the seaside to enable us to get
a first-hand experience of the types of things that we will be studying
and get a chance to consolidate and extend our learning.
In Mathematics, we will be practising our adding and subtracting and multiplying and dividing skills,
looking in greater depth at 3D shapes and their properties as well as developing our understanding of
time.
In Science we will be learning about adaptation, studying lots of different animals that live within our
local environment as well as those afield and learning how they have adapted to their
environments/habitats. In English, we will be looking at stories written by Oliver Jeffers and writing
our own quest stories. We will also be linking our Science to our writing by looking at Percy the Park
Keeper Stories. We will then be writing our own Percy the Park Keeper stories, focusing on developing
and extending our sentences to give greater detail and description for effect.

In RE we will be studying Bahmitzvah. In addition to this we will continue to consider our schools
values of Love, Faith and Courage. In our PE lessons we will be taking part in athletics, ready for
Sports Day, as well as having CM Sports on a Wednesday morning. We will also be learning Maypole
ready to perform at the Bentley Fete.
As you are aware the children will be taking their nationally set standardized tests during the month of
May. It is very important that your child is in school on time, every day as these tests form a
fundamental part of your child’s final KS1 assessment. Please cancel any appointments within school
hours in May. If this is not possible, please speak to the Headteacher urgently to discuss this. If you
have any queries or concerns, please see Miss Kirby.
Timetable essentials!
Your child may change their library book on a Tuesday and their reading book any day they need to.
Please continue reading and discussing books at home at least five times a week. Don’t forget to
record it in your child’s reading diary
PE is on a Wednesday and a Thursday this term. Please ensure your child has kit that fits especially
trainers or plimsolls. In addition to our PE sessions the children take part in Runtastic several times a
week so it would be useful to have their trainers in school every day.
Support your child with learning their spellings ready for their weekly spellings test on Fridays.
New spellings will be handed out on a Monday, homework will be given out on a Friday and will be due
in the following Friday.
