Concepts
Children should be able to identify two fractions which total one whole one.
There are two aspects to this: firstly the concept that if the numerator and
denominator are the same then the fraction will total one
Eg
4
4
This can be demonstrated by viewing the fraction as a division sum: 4 divided by
4 is 1.
Secondly, a knowledge of equivalent fractions is needed when the bottom
numbers or denominators are nor the same eg
3
2
and
4
8
At this stage we are keeping to those fractions which children should be familiar
with: halves, quarters, eighths, fifths and tenths.

In this rectangle there are 8
squares.
And 4 of them are
shaded.
a) How many more squares need to be shaded to shade the whole
rectangle?
b)
How many squares are there in this rectangle?
How many squares are shaded?
What fraction is shaded?
What fraction is not shaded?
I love butterflies!
c)
How many butterflies are there?
How many butterflies are ringed?
What fraction is ringed?
What fraction is not ringed?
