ON THE AIR: The IWU/Carthage game will be broadcast live on the Internet at www.wjbc.com as well as on WJBC 1230 AM … The game will also ne available on video stream at http://live.carthage.edu THE POLLING PLACE: Illinois Wesleyan is No. 22 in the fourth American Football Coaches Association poll of the year (Oct. 14)… North Central is No. 4 and Wheaton is No. 13 … Mount Union, Mary Hardin Baylor, Linfield, North Central and Hobart comprise the top five … IWU is up to No. 23 (from No. 26) in the weekly D3football.com poll (Oct. 13). North Central is No. 4 and Wheaton remained No. 13. OCTOBER: The Titans are 74-44 (.627 winning mark) in the month during the Norm Eash coaching tenure, including 2-0 this year … IWU was 2-2 in October 2012, 4-1 in October 2011, 3-2 in October in 2010, 4-1 in October 2009, 2-2 in October 2008 and 4-0 in October 2007. HOME AND AWAY: Since Norm Eash became head coach in 1987, Illinois Wesleyan is 94-34 (.734) at home and 75-54-1 on the road (.577). CCIW HONORS: Senior Devonte Jones (Bolingbrook, Ill., HS) was selected as College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin "Special Teams Player of the Week" on Monday, Oct. 14. Jones had three kickoff returns for 147 yards (49.0 yard average) in a 52-21 win over North Park. He had a long kickoff return of 81 yards in the fourth quarter. Jones accounted for 313 all-purpose yards as on offense he rushed for 166 yards on 12 carries with two touchdowns. For the season he has 10 returns for an average of 43.7 yards per return and is the NCAA Division III national leader in that statistic category. LAST WEEK: Head coach Norm Eash became the all-time win leader in Illinois Wesleyan football coaching history as the No. 24-ranked Titans rolled past North Park, 52-21 at Tucci Stadium on Oct. 12. Eash now has 169 career wins (169-88-1) and bested the mark of 168 by his own college coach Don "Swede" Larson, who was 168-121-6 from 1954 to 1986. The Titans built a 45-0 lead through three quarters and had 28 of those points in the first quarter after the game started one hour and 45 minutes late (3:15 p.m.) due to a bus problem for North Park. Senior Devonte Jones (Bolingbrook HS) had 313 all-purpose yards as he rushed for 166 yards and two touchdowns and returned three kickoffs for 147 yards, including a long run of 81 yards. Senior T.J. Stinde (Lexington HS) also ran for 99 yards on eight carries with a TD as Illinois Wesleyan amassed 531 yards of total offense (313 rush, 218 pass) against 326 for the Vikings (300 pass, 26 run). Senior quarterback Rob Gallik (Chicago, St. Rita HS), who completed his first 11 passes, was 16 of 21 for 202 yards and three touchdowns. Alex Garvey (Glenview, Glenbrook South HS) was on the receiving end of two TDs and made five grabs for a total of 72 yards. Tate Musselman (Bloomington, Normal Community HS) also made a TD reception and sophomore Michael Kelley (Carbondale HS) hit a 33yard field goal … Defensively IWU got seven tackles from Zach Freundt (Antioch HS) and six each from Chris Simms (Chicago, St. Rita HS) and Kyle Pfister (Elk Grove HS). The Red Men won their season opener 52-6 against Lakeland and have lost four straight since then – to Wartburg (27-10), Adrian (28-14), North Park (22-20) and Wheaton (280). Wheaton had 435 total offensive yards (227 rushing and 208 passing), while Carthage collected 256 yards (eight yards rushing and 248 passing). The Thunder had a 33:05 to 26:55 edge in time-of-possession and a 25-16 advantage in first downs, including six-of-15 on third-down conversions. The Red Men, who have been plagued by turnovers the last few weeks, did not turn the ball over against the Thunder. Carthage quarterback A.J. Simoncelli completed 28-of-42 passes for 248 yards with sophomore Jamahl Wright catching 11 of those for 85 yards. Red Men sophomore outside linebacker Sean Oroni led the Carthage defensive effort with 10 tackles (8 solo, 2 assisted)… Mike Yeager is 1-7 as Carthage head coach in his first full season. He was Carthage’s defensive coordinator in 2011 and 2012 and was the Red Men's interim head coach for the final three games of the 2012 season when Tim Rucks was on medical leave. Yeager served as an assistant coach at Indiana from 2006-10 and spent five years as an assistant at the College of Wooster. Yeager lettered three times at linebacker at Miami University (1996-99). THE SERIES VS. CARTHAGE: The Titans lead the series with the Red Men, 38-19, dating back to an Oct. 23, 1926 game in Bloomington. Illinois Wesleyan has won five of the last six meetings, and the last Red Men win vs. the Titans was a 26-21 game in 2008 in Bloomington … IWU won 45-7 last season in the IWU Homecoming game. PREVIOUS CCIW HONORS: Senior Devonte Jones (Bolingbrook, Ill., HS) was CCIW "Offensive Player of the Week" on Oct. 7. Jones rushed for 226 yards and three TDs on 35 carries during the Titans' 35-21 victory at Millikin. The 226 rushing yards was the fifth most in school history and the most since Marcus Dunlop had 222 yards on October 30, 2004. The school record is 273 yards by Chris Humbles against North Park on Nov. 9, 1991. The 35 carries also tied for third all time in school history. That school mark is 39 by both Kurt Swearingen (Augustana 1977) and Chris Ross (North Central, Oct. 19, 2002) … Senior defensive back Tim Hollowed (Glen Ellyn, Ill., Glenbard West HS) was CCIW "Defensive Player of the Week" on Sept. 30. Hollowed totaled 11 tackles (six solo), 1.5 tacklesfor-losses totaling -4 yards, and one interception in a 14-7 win against Hope College. Hollowed's interception occurred at the Illinois Wesleyan six-yard line on Hope's final drive that he returned 24 yards to the Titans' 30 … Senior Rob Gallik (Chicago, St. Rita HS) was CCIW "Offensive Player of the Week" on Sept. 9. Gallik completed 20 of 24 passes (.833) for 349 yards and five touchdowns in the Titans' 48-21 road win at Aurora. His .833 completion percentage is second only to Lon Erickson's school record of .871 (27-of-31) against Millikin in 1996. The 349 passing yards is 10th best in a game and the five TD passes is tied for fourth most in an IWU game. Previous stops were to Hamburg, Germany (1996); Bergamo, Italy (2001); Paris (2005); and Vienna, Austria (2009). In three of those four seasons following the trip, IWU either shared or won the CCIW title outright … Against Finland, the Titans not only dominated the scoreboard but the statistics, as well, amassing 392 yards of total offense (231 rushing and 161 passing) while limiting the Finnish squad to a meager 38 yards total (75 passing and -37 on the ground) … IWU racked up 21 first downs to four for the opposition in the game of four 12-minute quarters … The Titan defense started out strong as Finland was limited to negative numbers in the first half with -8 total yards on -17 rushing and nine passing yards. PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS: Four Illinois Wesleyan players were chosen as members of the 25th annual USA College Football Pre-Season Division III All-American teams. Senior wide receiver Alex Garvey and senior defensive back Stephen McGinnis were chosen to the second team on offense and defense, respectively, while senior quarterback Rob Gallik was on the third team offense and junior linebacker Connor Klein earned honorable mention on defense. All four Titan players were chosen to the second team of the 2012 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin squads. CCIW PRESEASON POLL: For the third straight year, Illinois Wesleyan was chosen to finish third in the 2013 CCIW preseason coaches poll. The Titans, who finished 6-4 overall and 3-4 in the league in 2012, got 35 points in the poll … Defending champion North Central (9-3, 6-1 in 2012) was picked to win its eighth-straight CCIW title and received 47 points and five first place votes, followed by Wheaton with 45 points and three first place votes after earning a share of the conference title last season, the Thunder's first since 2006. After IWU was Augustana (5-5, 4-3) in fourth with 28 points. Elmhurst (10-2, 6-1), coming off a share of its first CCIW title since 1980 and first NCAA postseason appearance in school history, was fifth with 27 points.
