The ozone layer is a layer in Earth’s atmosphere which contains the 03. This layer
absorbs 97 to 99% of the UV (or, ultraviolet) frequency that can damage life on Earth.
This means that it is vital to all creatures. It is located in the lower position of the
stratosphere from approximately 15 Km to 35 Km above Earth.
The ozone layer was discovered in 1913 by the French physicists Charles Fabry and
Henri Buisson. Its properties were explored in detail by the British meteorologist
G.M.B.
Dobson, who developed a simple spectrophotometer that was used to measure
stratospheric ozone from the ground. Between 1928 and 1958, Dobson made many
stations to observe the ozone layer. The “Dobson unit” is a measure of the total amount
of ozone on the air. It was named in his honor.
