LCA SUMMER READING PROGRAM 2016
(K5-12th Grades)
Dear LCA Parents,
LCA is instituting a summer reading program to encourage excellence in reading. Studies
indicate that children in their early years who read, are read to, and own books perform better in the
classroom and on tests than those who do not. LCA is committed to helping your students receive a
superior education. Subsequently, our summer reading program will require your child to read at least
one of the titles listed before he/she returns to school. In August, students will be required to submit
a brief essay of the contents of the required reading. In addition to the essay, quizzes may be given
based on the discretion of the teacher. Make sure that your child reads the required summer reading.
Students taking honors classes are required to read all the titles listed under the honors section of the
summer reading list.
Your child’s grade is listed as the one he/she will enter in the fall (example: students who have
just finished 2nd grade follow the list for rising 3rd graders). Please encourage your student to read the
Recommended List as well. These are great books that will improve your child’s reading and enhance
his/her life. Your participation in the “Read Alouds” will demonstrate your commitment to your
child’s/children’s excellence in reading as well.
Additional ideas to encourage reading:
! Library & Ice Cream Night – The entire family goes to the library to choose books and then
out to Dairy Queen for a cool reward.
!
Outdoor blanket party – books, lemonade, and reading anywhere in the yard or on the porch
!
Used bookstore treasure hunt – Whoever finds the best book for the cheapest price chooses
the next read-aloud book.
!
Reading caves – Make a corner of the room, closet, garage, or tree fort a reading hideout for
your child/children.
!
Set the timer to limit video games, TV, and computer play especially in the summer when
we are most likely to lose track of their gaming time.
The sky is the limit for ways to encourage your child/children to love books; so have a great summer
vacation and read, read, read!
Sincerely,
LCA Faculty/Administration
