MOTHERHOOD AND MAY
A BRIEF HISTORY OF
Mother’s Day
“My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe
to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual,
and physical education I received from her.”
– George Washington
We’ve only set aside one nationally
designated day to celebrate our mothers, but the truth
is that we’re indebted to them every day. Motherhood is a lifetime
commitment. Every breath we take is possible because of a mother’s
sacrifice. And if our mothers are anything like Washington’s was,
they’re a part of everything we’ve learned and achieved.
Americans have loved and honored their mothers since our nation
began. Before George Washington ran our newborn country, he was a
newborn in his mother’s arms. Many artists, poets, politicians, and even
presidents have written about their beloved mothers’ influence. We’re
guessing Mrs. Washington was George’s first leadership example in
addition to his “moral, intellectual, and physical” teacher.
Although Washington expressed great love and appreciation toward
his mother as early as the 1700s, in our country’s youth, Mother’s Day
didn’t become an official U.S. holiday until 1914. Anna Jarvis first had
the idea after her mother’s death in 1905. Mother’s Day, she said, would
be “a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children.”
She campaigned vehemently for nearly a decade before Woodrow
Wilson made Mother’s Day an official American holiday.
How fitting it is that we celebrate mothers in spring, the season of birth
and renewal. In the animal world, motherhood and spring are closely
entwined. Perhaps that’s why we’ve chosen to officially celebrate our
mothers on the second Sunday in May.
We’re all in high spirits around here as we returned from a magical
vacation in Orlando! The kids don’t always tag along on work-related
trips with me, but at the beginning of this month, the American
Association of Orthodontists (AAO) held its annual meeting in
Orlando. Last year the conference was held in San Francisco, so my
wife and I went together. But since they planned the event to take
place in Orlando this year, I just couldn’t miss the opportunity to take
the kids to Disney World! Living so close to Southern California, we’ve
done Disneyland, but never have we had an excuse to go to visit
Disney World as a family.
So we packed up the kids and embarked upon a journey to the
Magic Kingdom, allowing all the kids to miss a week of school for
the experience. While I was in the conference, the family got to meet
Mickey and see the sites, and we even made it to a Tampa Bay Rays
game! It has long been on my “bucket list” of goals to visit all of the
MLB stadiums in the country, so wherever I go, I go to a game. It was
fantastic to check off yet another stadium off my list, and even better
to have done it with my whole ballpark-food-loving family with me.
This month also marks the annual father-son campout that my boys
and I participate in each year through our church. Informal and fun,
this bonding trip is designed to let the guys get to know one another,
play in the outdoors, and create some lasting memories with their
dads. Since I have three boys, I never miss the campout. It’s a lot of
planning and preparation, but it’s always worth the effort.
This year, the group is going to a ranch in Alamo, Nevada, for the big
adventure. It’s always a really fun weekend because a bunch of dads
bring their sons, we set up tents, make a bonfire, and let the boys just
go crazy playing games and running around with flashlights — the
quintessential camping experience. It’s one of the highlights of the
spring for them, and the dads have a great time too.
REMEMBER!
As we celebrate Mother’s Day this month with a family sit-down
dinner over at my mother-in-law’s home, I’m so grateful for the time
we have to spend with all the moms in our lives, and for everything
they do for our families and our communities. Happy Mother’s Day to
all of the moms out there! I hope this month is a special one for you
and yours. Thanks for all you do!
WE CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOU
AT OUR NEW LOCATION!

Hack or Hoax

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE
INTERNET’S FAVORITE LIFE HACKS
Everyone loves a good life hack. These
clever tricks can often make the day just a
little easier. The internet is so full of these
amazing hacks that one starts to wonder if
they are all that they claim to be. Wonder
no more! Here are three popular internet
life hacks that DON’T work.
Stacking Food in the Microwave Shortens
Cook Time
This life hack does not work simply
because of the way microwaves operate.
The waves created by microwaves are
absorbed by foods, agitating the molecules
and warming them up. Glass, ceramic, and
plastic interact with the waves differently
than water, fats, or sugars. Stacking food in
the microwave with extra dishes will only
interfere with the waves. You could end up
with some food still cold and other foods
completely burned.
Toilet Paper Roll Phone Speakers
While cutting a slit in the side of a toilet
paper roll and sliding your phone inside
will increase the sound, it is only a
marginal change. Plus, the sound quality
is terrible. The paper material of the roll is
more inclined to absorb the sound waves
than amplify them. Red Solo cup laptop
speakers don’t work for the same reason.
Chewing Gum When Chopping Onions
Prevents Tears
Popping a piece of gum into your mouth
before chopping onions seems like an easy
fix. Unfortunately, the nose and mouth have
nothing to do with why onions make people
cry. Cutting onions releases the amino acids
they contain into the air, creating a compound
called syn-Propanethial S-oxide. Your nerve
endings view this as a harmful chemical and
try to protect your eyes by signaling your tear
ducts to start the waterworks. No gum can
save you from science.
THERE’S NOTHING FUN ABOUT DENTURES
(But the History is Pretty Cool)
Your mouth is where the world of practicality and aesthetics meet
at 32 sparkling points: your teeth. No one is perfect though, and
as we age, our teeth go through a lot. Whether it’s trauma, gum
disease, or some other cause, by the time we’re in our golden
years, many of us are missing a few (or more) teeth. Dentures are
one option for restoring utility and beauty to your smile.
Dentures have been around in some form or another for centuries.
According to the Academy of Oral Dentistry, ancient civilizations
first used ivory and bone to create new teeth. Since that time,
we’ve made many advances in the realm of dentures. Now we
use ceramic or plastic to create far more effective and realistic
teeth. As for the “gum” portion that sits between the teeth and
your mouth, ever since vulcanized rubber was discovered in 1839,
dentures have become far more comfortable and practical. Finally,
in 1994, Richard Lim and Robert Leone invented and patented an
adhesive designed to keep dentures firmly in place. Thanks to all
of these innovations, dentures today can play a tremendous role in
giving people a better quality of life.
Are you looking to restore your beautiful smile and your
confidence? Dentures might just be the solution. They’re often
the best option for people whose bones and gums aren’t strong
enough to support dental implants. To find out if dentures are right
for you, give us a call!
CHOCOLATE PECAN
FROM THE DOCTORS
DR. MORNEAU:
“I’m off to Orlando in a week for the American
Association of Orthodontics’ annual session. I
look forward to learning more pearls of wisdom
to serve our patients even better. On another
note, a humming bird has built a nest in our
backyard. The nest is about the size of my
thumb. A few days ago, my wife noticed two
or three very tiny baby hummingbirds reaching
up for food from mama. It’s such a minor thing,
but we’ve enjoyed it.”
DR. MARTINEZ:
Finally the day has arrived! Dr. Martinez is getting
married on the 21st of this month. The wedding
will take place in an outdoor venue close to Big
Bear Mountain, so he and his fiancé are crossing
their fingers for great weather. Dr. Wirig and Dr.
Morneau are attending, so Dr. Martinez apologizes
for the closure of the office for that Saturday, but
we know all of you will understand. :)
