Taxon Name: Glyptothorax conirostris (Steindachner 1867)
Synonym(s):
• Glyptosternum modestum
Taxonomic Notes:
Glyptothorax conirostris was described from Shimla, India by Steindachner (1867). The river system from
which the holotype was obtained is not immediately clear, since there are two in the vicinity of Shimla
(the Sutlej River, an eastern tributary of the Indus River, and the Giri and Pabbar rivers, both tributaries
of the Yamuna, which is the largest tributary of the Ganges River). This species has also been reported
from the Mahananda River (Jayaram 1999), which forms part of the Brahmaputra River drainage in
northern Bengal, although this record may be questionable. Glyptosternum modestum Day, 1872 is
currently considered a junior synonym (Ferraris 2007) and although G. garhwali Tilak, 1969 has been
considered a junior synonym of this species by Menon (1999), it is now generally acknowledged that it is
a distinct, valid species. Although regarded as a valid species in the literature (Ferraris 2007), the exact
identity of G. conirostris is not clear, and the conspecificity of the material from the Indus, Ganges and
Brahmaputra river drainages require further verification.
Assessment Information
Red List Category & Criteria:
Data Deficient ver 3.1
Year Published:
2010
Date Assessed:
October 13, 2009
Justification:
Although regarded as a valid species in the literature (Ferraris 2007), the exact identity of G. conirostris
is not clear, and the conspecificity of the material from the Indus, Ganges and Brahmaputra river
drainages require further verification. There is insufficient information on the distribution, population
(and its trends), and biology of this species for an accurate assessment. Coupled with the taxonomic
confusion surrounding the identity of this species, this species is therefore assessed as Data Deficient.
Geographic Range
Range Description:
This species is known from the Ganges and Indus River drainages in India. Although it has been recorded
from the Mahananda River (part of the Brahmaputra River drainage), this record may be questionable.
Country Occurrence:
Native: India (Himachal Pradesh)

Population
There is no information on the population and its trend for this species.
Current Population Trend: Unknown
Habitat and Ecology (see Appendix for additional information)
This species inhabits swift-flowing rivers with a substrate of sand and rocks.
Systems: Freshwater
Use and Trade (see Appendix for additional information)
This species is presumably caught as a food fish in artisanal fisheries, like many of its congeners.
Threats
The threats to this species are unknown, since there is little information on the biology of this species
and therefore the impact of potential threats (especially those of an anthropogenic nature) remains
unknown. The current threats to aquatic biodiversity in all of its known distribution have also not been
adequately identified.
Conservation Actions (see Appendix for additional information)
There is a need to resolve the uncertainty surrounding the identity of this species. More research about
the population size and trends, distribution and the biology of this species is also needed, as there is
insufficient information available. Potential threats to this species also need to be identified.
