Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 An Introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 STM Training Program Center for Teaching and Learning Prepared by: Niranjan Khadka (Instructional Design Assistant) I.WHAT IS MICROSOFT POWERPOINT? Microsoft PowerPoint is a presentation software application that enables us to combine graphics, text, animation and audio together for an interactive presentation. It is a part of the Microsoft Office suite that includes other powerful office tools like MS Word, MS Excel and MS Access. Slide shows created with MS PowerPoint are often used for business, training, or educational presentations. Additionally, the slides can be arranged and printed as handouts for reference. PowerPoint uses a graphical approach to the presentation in the form of slide shows. The last version of PowerPoint is MS PowerPoint 2010 for Windows. II.WHAT IS NEW IN MS POWERPOINT 2010? a. Embed and edit video from within PowerPoint: You can add video effects, formatting effects, bookmark scenes, and trim videos in our presentation slide to give a professional look to your presentation. b. Use new and improved picture editing tools: There are tools like picture editing; allowing you to apply versatile artistic effects and advanced correction, and color to your image. The cropping tool allows you to get rid of unwanted scene from your image and tune every picture in your presentation. Furthermore, 3-D slide transitions and other realistic animation effects can be used to grab your audience’s attention. c. Work together more successfully: The new added co-authoring capabilities to edit the same presentation allow you to work with people in different locations at the same time. You can even communicate as you work, directly from PowerPoint d. Access and share your content from more places: You can get things done when and where you need to, from the Web with Microsoft PowerPoint Web App or even from your smartphone with Microsoft PowerPoint Mobile. Click on Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft PowerPoint 2010. 2. Go to the Design tab and choose the desired theme for your presentation. 3. Click inside the Title place holder to write your tile for the presentation. You may also add your subtitle simply by clicking inside the Subtitle placeholder. Title placeholder Subtitle placeholder 4. Now go to the Home tab and click on New Slide to add new slides to your presentation. Add new slide Page4 5. You can choose slides based on your need. Some slides have only text section while some slides have table, media, picture and smart art graphics. Slide designs Inserting a New Slide with Image a. Click on the New Slide tab from Home Menu and select Picture with Caption. b. Give a title for your slide and click on the image icon from that slide to add picture. c. Browse your desired picture and add it to your slide. d. As soon as you add picture to your slide, Picture Tool will appear in the Menu tab. You can use this tool to resize, crop, change picture settings including brightness, picture effects and picture styles. Picture Tools Crop Pict. Style Correction Page5 Inserting a Slide with Two Columns of Text a. Click on the New Slide tab from Home and select Two Content Slide. b. You can add text, picture, and graphs as you wish in the columns. Adding Animation and Transition to the Slides: a. Select the picture or image you would like to animate. b. Click on the Animation from the Menu bar. c. Choose the animation that you like to use. The animation will be applied to your picture or text. d. You will see numbers (1, 2…….) next to the picture or text where you have applied the animation whereas in the Slide Panel you will see the start sign in the corresponding Slide. Animation Animated Slide Animation number Page6 e. In order to add transition in between the slide, go to the Transition Menu at the top. f. Select the slide where you want to apply transition and choose your desired Transition from the list. You will see the preview in your slide when you click on the transition type. Transition Selected Slide Adding background picture in your slide: a. To add your desired picture as a background for your slide, go to Design Menu. b. On the far right corner, there is a tab called Background Styles and underneath it there is a button called Hide Background graphic. c. Check that button and click on Background Styles and then to Format Background. d. After you clicked on Format Background, a new window for formatting background will appear. e. Select Picture or texture file option and click on Insert file. Browse your desired file for the background. If you want the same background for all your slide press Apply to All otherwise select Close button. Page7 Page8 Adding audio/Video in your Slide: a. Click on Insert from the Menu Bar. b. In your far right corners there are buttons for either adding audio/Video. c. If you select Video, it will give you option either to add video from the web or from file. In order to add video from web, you need to get the embed code for that particular video and paste it. You can add background music in your slide show by clicking on Audio in Insert tab. Again, you can change audio/video settings by clicking on the audio/video itself and following the Audio/Video Tools from the Menu tab. Audio/Video Tools have two options; Format and Playback. Page9 Inserting Audio/Video Inserted Audio from file Inserted Video from file Adding Narration in your slideshow: a. Select the slide where you want to add narration. b. Go to Slideshow Menu from the Menu bar. c. Click on Record Slide Show button. d. Make sure your microphone is working fine. When you are ready click on Start Recording. e. You can record your narration for all sides at one time or can select specific slides to narrate. When you click on the down arrow in the Record Slide Show button, you will get two options; Start Recording from the beginning and Start Recording from current slide. f. Once you are done recording your narration for a slide, simply click on the X button to stop narration. g. You will see sound icon in your corresponding slide where you have added narration. You can either click the icon to play the sound or set the sound to play automatically. Again, you can use Audio Tools to change the setting. Page10 Slide Show and Adding Annotation during Slideshow: a. Once you are doing with your slide, save your presentation in proper place. It’s better to save your presentation file as PowerPoint 93-2000 presentation format. b. To play your slideshow, simply go to slideshow button at the bottom of the page or go to Slideshow Menu at the top Menu tab. c. To add annotation while slideshow, right click on the presentation and go to pointer option. Select Pen tool or highlight tool. Now you can use them to annotate your presentation while slideshow.
