Passion Play
Adventures
with Nancy
Sharon Flick
Preparations are already underway in in the tiny Bavarian hamlet of Oberammergau for
the Passion Play in 2020.
Nancy Alligood, CTC
It begins all the way back in 1633 when Oberammergau was suffering from the Bubonic
Plague. The surviving villagers appealed for Divine intervention to save their families.
They vowed that if God were to spare them, they would perform a Passion Play every
ten years. They say not a single person fell victim to the Plague after that. Keeping
their promise, the people of Oberammergau performed the first play in 1634 and have
continued to do so throughout the centuries.

Today, many of Oberammergau’s residents still take part in this powerful work of art
featuring dramatic performances, beautiful music and choral accompaniment. The
men begin to grow long hair and beards one year prior to the start of each Passion
Play for authenticity. Only residents and children who were born or have lived in
Oberammergau for at least 20 years are allowed to participate.
Being situated in a beautiful and charming part of Germany, most travelers like to weave
the experience into a European tour.

The Magic is
Everywhere
Land of
Fire and Ice
Linda Waynick
Laura Ellis
Iceland is known as ‘The Land of Fire and Ice’ because it has both
glaciers and volcanoes dotted around the island.
A trip to Walt Disney World is a trip to the most magical place
on earth. While there, you’ll discover four fantastic Theme Parks,
two amazing Water Parks, 20-plus unique Resort hotels and the
one-of-a-kind Disney Springs.
In Iceland, there are many volcanoes and many glaciers that have
formed on top of active volcanoes. When the volcanoes erupt, the
glacier ice above them melts very quickly, creating devastatingly
destructive rivers called jokulhlaup.
The Magic Kingdom is where imagination lives and where dreams
are experienced every day. Epcot is like taking a step into the
future and around the world. It’s where today’s wonder and
tomorrow’s technology converge in one magnificent experience.
Hollywood Studios is where action takes center stage and where
you step inside the fabulous worlds of movies, television, music
and theater. At Animal Kingdom, you will hear the roar of a lion,
the beat of a drum and experience real life animals in their natural
habitat on a trek through the Wildlife Reserve.
Iceland has been described as surreal, not just for its lunar-like
landscapes that defy comparison to anywhere else but also for
its glaciers, lava fields, thermal lagoons and mountain-ringed fjords
that are breathtaking.
Your small ship cruising experience begins and ends in Reykjavik
where you embark your ship for a 7-night cruise visiting many
ports along the coast. With ice caps, glaciers, geysers and
thundering waterfalls, along with vast open spaces that are home
to pristine wilderness teeming with volcanoes, Iceland welcomes
nature enthusiasts with open arms.
From a big splash of Water Park fun to amazing and awe-inspiring
shopping, dining and entertainment options, you’ll find plenty to
do beyond the Theme Park adventures.

To travel to Myanmar, formerly Burma, is to step back in time…
to a place that has changed little since the British colonial era.
In 2015 Myanmar voted in its first democratically elected
government in over half a century. The world is rushing to do
business there. Swathes of the country, off-limits for years, can
now be freely visited. Modern-day travel conveniences, such as
mobile phone coverage and internet access, are now common,
but largely confined to the big cities and towns, where the recent
economic and social improvements are most obvious.
Thankfully, the change of pace is not overwhelming, leaving the
simple pleasures of travel in Myanmar intact. Enjoy a slow pace
down the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River in a luxury cruiser. Stake
out a slice of beach on the blissful Bay of Bengal. Trek through
pine forests to minority villages scattered across the Shan Hills
without jostling with scores of fellow travelers. Best of all, you’ll
encounter locals who are gentle, humorous, engaging, considerate,
inquisitive and passionate – they want to play a part in the world,
and to know what you make of their world. Now is the time to
make that connection.
The all-suite Avalon Myanmar, a remarkable suite ship, delivers a
truly intimate experience with a maximum of 36 guests. It has
all the modern features you expect, yet it reflects the character
of Myanmar.

Calgary, Alberta, which was once the heart of the Old West and is
now a thriving urban center with plenty of cultural offerings and
high-end shopping; visit British Columbia and stroll around quaint
little towns with scenic landscapes. Whenever the train pulls into
the station, you will find yourself somewhere enchanting.
Sink back in your comfortable seat during the day and prepare to
revel in panoramic views of remarkable scenery. Their friendly
onboard Hosts are full of knowledge along the way as you and
your fellow passengers learn about the land, its history, and the
animals that call it home. Each night, you will sleep soundly in the
comfort of a hotel room.
There are many itineraries to choose from - whether you choose
to travel in the spring, summer or fall, you will enjoy this great
experience. You may extend your adventure by adding an Alaska

TRAVELWISE
Cruising
the British Isles
By Nancy B. Alligood, CTC, Warwick Travel Service
H
aving recently returned with a
group of Warwick Travelers, I
want to share our experience of this
exciting adventure, visiting England,
Scotland, Wales, Republic of Ireland
and Northern Ireland.
From rolling green countryside and
castles to charming cobblestone streets
and traditional pubs, the region offers
something for every cruiser. The compact nature of the British Isles means
you can spend more time onshore,
so you can visit landmarks such as
Stonehenge and the Blarney Stone and
also visit historic cities such as Dublin,
Edinburgh and London.
On a morning flight from Dulles,
we arrived in London at 7:30 pm
(London time), transferred to our hotel
and off to bed for a good night’s sleep.
The next three days were filled with
tours and sightseeing—visiting the
state rooms in Buckingham Palace, the
Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral,
the Victoria & Albert Museum, the
British Museum and the Churchill War
Rooms, including the 19 underground
bunkers during World War II. Our
evenings were filled with a London
Thames Dinner Cruise and plays.
On our first full day aboard ship
we cruised the North Sea towards
Newcastle, U.K., our first port city.
Here, I visited the Beamish Open
Air Museum, consisting of dozens of
original buildings from different time
periods that have been reconstructed
to create an Edwardian historical town.
Most exciting and is still expanding.
Edinburgh, Scotland, was our second port where we planned to anchor;
however, rough seas changed those
plans, so we continued to our next port
of call. This sometimes happens when
the seas are a little too rough to launch
the tenders. Of course, this is always
the Captain’s call!
Buckingham Palace
Although I had previously
visited Ireland, I had never
visited Northern Ireland, so I was
excited about our next ports of
call. In Londonderry, Northern
Ireland, I visited the UNESCO
World Heritage Site—Giant’s
