a detailed troubleshooting guide to registration.

JMSB Undergraduate Student Affairs Office
Registration Instructions
Dear Student,
If you experience difficulty in registering for specific courses, please follow the instructions
below which cover the main issues that are typically encountered by new and returning
students. The registration issues encountered by new JMSB students are listed first, followed by
registration issues that may affect all students attempting to register for specific courses. The
Student Hub (http://www.concordia.ca/students/your-sis.html) includes a number of How To
Guides that provide detailed explanations about any aspect related to your studies at Concordia
University. These How To Guides will help you navigate through the Student Information
System (SIS). We strongly recommend that you consult these Guides to learn about processes
related to admissions, advising, registration, exams, finances and other issues.
New JMSB students
 If you are unable to register for any course because of a Hold (or restriction) on your record,
and the Hold message indicates that you must see an advisor, please follow the instructions
for advising as stated on your offer of admission.
 If you (1) accepted your offer of admission, (2) paid the ‘admissions confirmation deposit,’
(3) accessed the 'My Questionnaires' section of the MyConcordia Student Centre to watch
the JMSB videos, (4) clicked the “Submit” button after viewing all the videos, (5) have no
Holds on your record, and (6) 24 hours have passed since you completed the last step, and
you are still unable to register for courses, please contact the admission counsellor who
signed your offer of admission.
 You must register for any courses listed in the ‘Deficiencies’ section of your offer of
admission before you register for business courses. For example, if BTM 200 is listed as a
deficiency, then you must register for it before registering for COMM 212; otherwise, you
will receive an error message.
All students
The following describes specific issues that students may encounter when they attempt to
register for courses. Some of these issues require that you submit a Student Request Form to
get them resolved.
When you submit a Student Request Form, please allow at least 48 hours (weekends
excluded) for a response, especially during the intense registration period (two weeks before
and two weeks after the start of the term). Please refrain from sending follow-up emails
about your request to any staff person at the Undergraduate Student Affairs Office until you
have received a response from our office. Multiple emails to different persons about the same
issue will result in unproductive use of staff time and will further delay the processing of all
student requests, including your request. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Course Prerequisite
 If you attempt to register for a course (for example, COMM 217) and receive a message that
the requisites for that course have not been met, please refer to the Undergraduate
Calendar (http://www.concordia.ca/academics/undergraduate/calendar/pdf.html) to check
the prerequisite(s) for that course (for COMM 217, the prerequisite is COMM 210). A
condensed list of JMSB courses and their prerequisites, if any, is attached for quick
reference.
 If you have not received an exemption or transfer credits for the prerequisite course,
then you must register for the prerequisite course first.
 If you have completed the prerequisite course, please check your offer of admission to
verify that it is listed under Exemptions or Transfer credits.
 If the prerequisite is not listed there, please contact your admission counsellor.
 If it is listed in your offer of admission, please submit a Student Request Form to
MB-4.201. The form is available on the undergraduate pages of the JMSB web site
and in room MB-4.201. Please attach a copy (screenshot) of the message you
received which would greatly facilitate the resolution of the problem.
Proper sequence of course completion
 If you have attempted Course A and did not pass it (for example, you have FNS, NR, or
FNS/DNW for COMM 215 on your record) and you have registered for Course B, which is the
next course in a sequence (for example, COMM 220), you will not be able to register for
Course A without dropping Course B first. Alternatively, you may submit a Student Request
Form to MB-4.201 and request permission to register for Course A without dropping Course
B. Please note that the Undergraduate Student Affairs Office reserves the right to withdraw
students from courses for which the prerequisite course(s) have not been completed. It is
therefore important that you be aware of the prerequisites for each of the courses that you
have registered for. Refer to the attached document for a list of JMSB courses and their
prerequisite(s).
Dropping a course that is a prerequisite for another course
 If you have registered for Course A in the Term 1 and course B, the next course in a
sequence, in Term 2 (for example, COMM 215 in Summer 2016 and COMM 225 in Fall 2016),
but decided to drop Course A and remained registered in Course B, then you cannot register
for Course A again in Term 2. Given that Course A is a prerequisite for Course B, it must be
completed before Course B, which must be dropped and registered for in a subsequent
term. If and only if Course A is a co-requisite to Course B (such as COMM 212 and COMM
210 or COMM 220 and COMM 308), then you may submit a Student Request Form to MB4.201 to be granted permission to register for Course A without dropping Course B.
The examples above clearly indicate that the prerequisite(s) for courses must always be
observed to facilitate the registration process.
Page | 2
Registration for a course for the third time
 If you have a fail notation for the same course twice, such as F, FNS, NR or FNS/DNW, you
cannot register for that course yourself. You must submit a Student Request Form to MB4.201 indicating the specific course section and term when you wish to repeat that course.
The same is true when you wish to repeat a course for a third time even if you passed the
course on the previous two attempts.
Registration in multi-section courses (use of SWAP function)
 If you attempt to register for Section A of a multi-section course, and the section is full, you
can add your name on the wait list for that course (refer to the guide How To Get on a
Waitlist for a Class on the Student Hub for details). As students make changes to their class
schedules and drop Section A, those on the wait list will be registered in that section in the
same sequence they are placed on the wait list. Alternatively, you may want to register for
another section of the course, Section B (for example), to ensure that you have a seat in the
course and swap Section B for Section A (refer to the guide How To Swap a Course on the
Student Hub). If space in Section A becomes available, you will be dropped from Section B
and registered in Section A. Please remember that if you register for section A and then add
your name to the wait list for section B without using the swap function, you will not be
registered in section B even if space becomes available. Note also that adding your name on
the wait list for section A and then registering for section B without using the swap function
will result in removal of your name from the wait list for section A.
Courses reserved for specific students
 Most of the courses offered by a specific department are reserved for students who are
enrolled in the Major(s) or Minor(s) offered by that department. For example, most of the
MANA courses offered by the Department of Management are reserved for students
pursuing the Major/Minor in Management, the Major/Minor in Human Resource
Management or the Minor in Entrepreneurship. Students who are not eligible to register for
such courses will not be able to do so on their own even if they add their names on wait lists
for such courses. A student may submit a Student Request for registration in reserved
courses only if space is available.
Assistance with registration for specific courses
 Direct registration of students in specific courses by designated staff in the Undergraduate
Student Affairs Office will only be made in situations where the students are not permitted
to register for a specific course on their own (such as when they fail a course twice) or in
exceptional circumstances when a student must complete a specific course to graduate at
the end of the upcoming term, or must register for a specific course to proceed with the
remaining courses in their program. A Student Request Form must be submitted to MB4.201 to seek assistance with registration in specific courses. In all other cases, students
must register for courses on their own either through direct registration or by adding their
names on available wait lists.

List of Courses Offered by the JMSB
The courses highlighted in blue are available to students who are not registered in a JMSB program. JMSB students
enrolled in the BComm, BAdmin, and Certificate programs, as well as non-JMSB students enrolled in the Minor in
Business Studies will not receive credit for completing these courses. Courses that appear in pink are available to
both JMSB and non-JMSB students. A limited number of spaces is available in select JMSB courses, particularly at the
300 and 400-level MANA and MARK courses to non-JMSB students who add the Management or Marketing Elective
Group to their program. Refer to the Undergraduate Calendar (Program Options for Non-Business Students) for a list
of these courses.
Clarifications about Prerequisites and Notes:
Prerequisites: Many courses require the completion of other courses, called prerequisites. For example, COMM 220
has the following prerequisite list: COMM 210, 215; ECON 201; ECON 203 previously or concurrently. To register for
COMM 220, the student should have registered for COMM 210, COMM 215 as well as ECON 201 in a previous term. But
both ECON 203 and COMM 220 can be taken in the same term.
In the calendar description of a course, reference is made in some cases to courses that have been deleted or replaced
by other courses. These courses, such as DESC 200, are not listed in the most recent Undergraduate Calendar, but
appear on the transcripts of students who completed them.
Notes: For many courses, reference is made to previous courses that have been deleted or replaced by other courses. If
a student has received credit for the previous equivalent course, then no credit will be given for the current version of
the course. For example, DESC 200 was replaced by BTM 200. If as student received credit for DESC 200, then no credit
will be given if the student completes BTM 200.
