The chief was having a huge feast.
There would be joyous music and dancing.
Messengers scurried from house to house
to invite all his people to come. Each
guest was asked to bring a calabash
of wine.
One man wanted very badly to come,
but had no wine to bring. But, he thought,
if hundreds of people poured their wine
into the chief’s huge pot, who would notice
if just one calabash had water instead of
wine? So that’s what he decided to do.
The day of the great feast arrived.
All guests had donned their finest clothes.
As guests entered the chief’s home, they
poured their calabashes into the chief’s
giant pot. The man did the same when it
was his turn.
After all guests had arrived, the chief’s
servants walked about the large room and
filled everyone’s cup with wine from the
pot. But when the man and the other guest
put their cups to their lips to drink, they
were very disappointed to taste only water.
