Now is the month of Maying, when merry lads are playing!
Each with a bonny lass, a-dancing on the grass!
The spring, clad all in gladness, doth laugh at winter’s sadness!
And to the birds’ clear sound, the nymphs tread out the ground!
-modified from the song by Sir Thomas Morely
(nymph: a mythical spirit of nature imagined as a beautiful maiden inhabiting rivers, woods or other natural habitats)
