2014-15 - Millfield School

Sport
I
n September we opened our new Sports Pavilion,
where every pupil participated in a fixture or
received coaching from one of our sporting celebrity
Old Millfieldians. Olympic hockey players, athletes and
swimmers joined international cricketers, rugby, tennis
and squash players in delivering a coaching day. We were
honoured the following weekend by the attendance of the
current England Rugby Captain and Millfield Prep Old Boy,
Chris Robshaw, to officially open the Sports Pavilion.
More than 500 riders competed in our first ever
Millfield British Eventing competition over the
May half term. Many parents and riders discovered
grounds that they had never seen before!
We have achieved notable success in National
and IAPS competitions. Many pupils have become
National Champions in individual and team sports
and older pupils have competed at County,
Regional and National level.
40
The most rewarding statistics show that every
child had the opportunity to compete for the
school on a regular basis. This year we ran 194
different teams across 27 sports and staffed an
impressive 2,003 fixtures. Our colleagues at sports
software company, FixturesPro, confirmed that our
pupils have more opportunity to participate than at
any other school in the country.

Athletics
It has become a cliché in the Yearbook athletics
report that the team at the National Finals is the
biggest we have ever taken. This year we again
took our biggest ever team, so the cliché can
continue. However, this year was also the most
successful, with the highest number of champions
and medallists. Our National Champions were
Jami Schlueter, Georgia Dolan and Tajera
Dayani, and the Year 8 girls defended their
relay title as well as beating their own record.
More important than all the records that
have been broken, the medals collected and the
national titles won, is how our athletes compete
and conduct themselves. When a boy from another
school fell in the national hurdle final the first boy
to offer commiseration to him was a Millfield Prep
athlete. Our athletes train hard and are ferocious
competitors but they also know how to compete
for Millfield and how to uphold the values
important in sport.

This athletics season was one of the best ever. Our
athletes competed right through from Years 3 to 8.
We had county champions on the track and in the
field, regional champions in the English Schools Cup
for both boys’ and girls’ teams and new records made
on Sports Day that will be tough to beat next year.

Boys' Cricket
The 2015 season was one of unique success and
achievement. The 1st XI were unbeaten this year,
winning all of their 26 matches, the County Cup
and two National Trophies. In the JET (RNCF)
semi-final in Oxford, they beat Bedes Prep
once again to go through to the final, beating
Northwood Prep to be crowned National
Champions. The team won through to the
Bunbury Cup Final for a consecutive year, playing
King Edward’s Birmingham and convincingly
winning by 10 wickets to retain the title of
National Bunbury Cup Champions. In addition,
they again retained the Somerset County U13
Shield by beating Taunton School in the final.

Basketball
The U13 team met with unprecedented success this year. For the first time
they entered the IAPS National Championships and came away victorious.
The first game against Prior Park showed that a few nerves were evident but
these were quickly overcome and the team cruised to a 13-3 victory. We saw
some great play from Gregg Cotter, Tajera Dayani and Maria Louro Varela
De Limia. In the next match they won 25-11 against Danes Hill, with Zeyaad
Ahmed hitting his stride so they were able to count on him for some big
rebounds and aggressive defence. Jorge Gonzalez Cardelus also had a big
impact with his great passing. Next, the squad came up against Lochiniver
House, winning comfortably 23-2. The captain, Luca Jumabhoy, had a
particularly excellent all-round game as did Lee McKenzie.
In the final group game they faced Yateley Manor, last year's champions.
It was tight but they pulled it out 9-8 behind the clutch free throw shooting
of Claudia Seryes Velasco. Guillaume Wilson was able to create some
excellent scoring opportunities for both himself and his teammates.
The team entered the semi-final undefeated and it was going to stay that
way. They were able to produce another 9-8 victory and met Edge Grove in
the final, a well-drilled squad with a very quick point guard and some bruising
big players. Millfield Prep tightened up their D and clogged up the middle
which shut down their point guard. Some of our smaller players stepped up
and played about six inches taller to battle Edge Grove for rebounds. Again,
Claudia delivered some clutch free throws and Guillaume hit a beautiful jump
shot to seal the victory.
Tournament MVP (Most Valuable Player) honours went to Guillaume,
with Claudia a close runner up, and season MVP also went to Guillaume.

The U12A side had outstanding results this
term, topped off with a huge win over King’s
Hall School, Taunton, in the County Cup Final.
Both Junior Development Squads involving players
in Years 4, 5 and 6 had some very good results
against various county sides this season.
The U8 team went unbeaten this year, playing
with superb technique both in the batting and
bowling departments.
House cricket produced some very good cricket;
Jutes became Year 8 House Champions, retaining
their title from last year. In Years 5 and 6 Angles
and Saxons were joint winners and finally, in Years
3 and 4 the champions were Jutes and Danes.
Outstanding performances with the bat and
ball were observed in all of the age groups, but
some notable accomplishments were 131 not
out scored by William Smeed for the 1st team
against Somerset County, Jack Chiu taking a
hat-trick in his 6 wickets for 8 runs against Clifton
College for the U12B team, and Max Hancock
taking a hat-trick in his 6 wickets for 21 runs
against Wellsway in the County Cup semi-final
for the U13A team.
The school has put out 11 boys’ teams, four
mixed (Junior Development and mixed 1st and
2nd teams) and four girls’ teams; allowing all
pupils in the school to have had the opportunity
to represent the school while developing their
cricketing skills.

1st XI 2015
– A Portrait of Success
Cricket is a very individual team game and just
one or two players can have a large impact on
a series of results. The team’s captain, William
Smeed, had a fantastic season with the bat.
In all he scored 1027 runs in 22 innings which
included 6 fifties and 3 centuries and he
finished with the stunning average of 73.4.
Max Hancock was the leading bowler and he
managed to take the remarkable number of 56
wickets from 155 overs at an average of just 5.6
and with a miserly economy rate of less than
2.5 runs per over. In one particular group of 6
balls he managed to take 5 wickets, including a
hat-trick! However, cricket is still a team game
and, in all, 20 pupils played for the team during
the season. Indeed in one of the fixtures, when
the captain and two or three other lads with
county experience were away representing the
school at an athletics fixture, the responsibility
for a match-winning unbeaten stand of 68
devolved upon Joe Mallett and Max French
and they saw things through to a satisfactory
conclusion with considerable aplomb. Twelve
different combinations of opening bowlers
were given the opportunity to take the new
ball during the season and eight players
bowled a total of more than 40 overs each.
Tremendous credit must go to all the boys
involved. They played for each other and
the team. The standard of ground fielding
was especially high throughout and the
running between the wickets developed
as the season went on to become a real
feature of the batting performances.

Girls’ Cricket
Girls’ cricket is becoming the fastest growing sport
in the prep school world. We have increased our
fixtures list and are now producing U11, U12 and
U13 squads. Next year we hope to add the U10
and U9 girls to the fixtures list.
Congratulations to Harriet Dimdore-Miles for
representing the U15 Somerset County girls’ side.
The U13 and U12 girls had an excellent season,
finishing on a high by winning the King’s Bruton
Tournament, beating the indoor National
Champions in the process.
Our U11 girls won all their school fixtures and just
missed out on beating the East Devon county side.
Well done to the girls who came second in the
Hazlegrove Tournament.
We ended the season with Jess Hazell, Harriet
Dimdore-Miles, Ollie Hayes and India-Rose
Owen playing for Somerset and with more talent
emerging, the future looks bright for girls’ cricket.

Fencing
This year’s fencing squad consisted of 22 fencers,
both boys and girls, from ages 9 to 14. It was coach
Sue Benney’s final year at the Prep School, and she
guided the pupils to some excellent results.
The big occasion was hosting the IAPS Competition
where, even with royalty gracing the stage (the
Countess of Wessex appeared), the fencers were
not put off. Our boys and girls were National IAPS
Team Champions and overall winning school from
the 43 schools that competed. Individual winners
were Loveday Hedgcock, 1st in the sabre (U14
girls), Ben Sanders, 1st in the sabre and 3rd in
the épée (U11 boys). Elena Launder came 1st in
the sabre and foil, 3rd in épée (U11 girls) and both
she and Ben were overall Masters at Arms.
Charlotte Taylor and Sophie Mabbs represented
the South West in the fencing épée at the British
Youth Championships 2015, held at the English
Institute of Sport in Sheffield.
01
In the South West Foil Championships, Oscar
Plant came 3rd in U14 and Luca Jumabhoy 5th.
Both boys were selected for the South West team.
The school had a good representation at the South
West Épée and sabre competition and came away
with four pupils qualifying to represent the South
West in the U14 Épée Nationals. Oscar and Luca
both qualified in equal 3rd place and Seb Melph
came 5th to qualify. Sophie Mabbs came 2nd in
the girls’ épée to qualify for the Nationals. In the
U12 girls’, Elena Launder and Ecaterina Sfiraiala
came 3rd and 5th to qualify. At U12 épée, Charlotte
Taylor came 3rd to qualify and Ben Sanders was 3rd
for the boys. In the U14 sabre, Loveday Hedgcock
came 3rd and both Morgan Zaky and Ecaterina
Sfiraiala qualified in 1st and 3rd in the U12 sabre.

Football
In the 11-a-side ISFA competition, our U13 boys
lost out in Round 2 to Rokeby, who went on to win
the ISFA Cup. In the ESFA cup, the team sadly lost
in Round 4, however, the 6-a-side team did well
to make it to the finals.
In the Mendip League our U13 side lost in the
final to a good, local Crispin side and the U12 team,
playing 9-a-side, won easily in their league, also
against Crispin. In the ESFA Cup, the U12 team
lost out to a strong Bristol side in Round 2.
Our girls U13 side was made up of Year 6, 7
and 8 pupils and they were delighted to win
the Port Regis 7-a-side Tournament.
In a tough semi-final against Maiden Beech
Academy, the U12 girls’ team played superbly
to hold on to their lead and progressed to the
County Cup final.
The Year 5 team were thrilled to win six matches,
two festivals and only lost two games overall.
Year 6 won a game and Years 3 and 4 played five
games and showed some talent during the season.

Golf
A record number of golfers coming through
the Millfield Prep Golf Academy has led to some
amazing results. The year started with the ISGA
Junior Cup with Charlie Goss and Freddie
Turnell playing well to achieve a high team finish.
The Somerset Schools Championships saw the
first major success of the year with Hugo King,
Javier Calles Roman and Morgan Bibiloni Cohen
winning the Nett Championship. Matches against
Port Regis saw two excellent victories with 15
different players representing the school over
the two games.
Individual successes included Samuel Pepler
winning his first two tournaments and Charlie
Goss, William O’Halloran, Sky Pinto, Hugo King,
Javier Calles Roman and Freddie Turnell all winning
Junior Opens. One of the highlights of the year was
Freddie playing in the European Championships
in Scotland and securing a brilliant finish to
qualify for the British Open and also the World
Championships at Pinehurst, North Carolina.
Returning as reigning IAPS U12 National
Champions and IAPS U10 Nationals winner,
the pressure was on to surpass last year’s
achievements. Morgan, Freddie and Jack Hayes
retained the team U12 trophy, and Freddie retained
his U10 National trophy. The U13 team of Charlie,
Sky and William played excellently to secure 2nd
place, with Charlie finishing 2nd individually in
the U13 category.
The Millfield Prep Open at Kingweston saw
a record number of 17 players, ranging from
Lowen Stephens in Year 3 to the Year 8 pupils.
In what was a strong field of 60 competitors, with
some excellent golfers coming from other schools,
it was great to see the Millfield Prep golfers rise to
the top.
Freddie and Morgan were 1st and 2nd respectively
in U11, Jack was 2nd in U12 and William was 2nd
in U13. The performances of the day came from
Charlie Goss and Georgia Dolan who secured
individual victories in the boys’ and girls’ overall
competitions respectively. The Millfield Prep
team of Charlie, William and Freddie secured
a comfortable victory in the team event.

Millfield Prep
Open
The National League Finals held at Radley College
provided an exciting finish to the summer term.
Charlie and Sky played excellently to secure a 5th
place finish, just three points behind the winners.
Freddie and Morgan were the youngest team to
qualify and achieved 8th place.
Freddie played in the U10 British Open and was
part of a strong European field to fight it out over
36 holes. Freddie started well and was in 5th place
just 6 shots off the lead after 18 holes. After
another solid performance on day two Freddie
finished in a notable 5th place.
The prestigious Stowe Putter produced tremendous
results. The team of five included Charlie, Freddie,
William, Jack and Barney French. Freddie won
the Junior Jigger for the best U11 score and Charlie
finished runner-up in the U13 category. With solid
performances by the whole team, Millfield Prep
won Best Team and secured the Stowe Shield.

Sport
Boys' Hockey
What a season for our 1st XI: Champions at
Bryanston, County and West IAPS, semi-finalists
at the National IAPS Competition and 3rd in
the National Schools Championships. It would
be no surprise to see members of this group
following the Mantell brothers, Nick Brothers
or Ed Horler into the international teams.
The achievement was even more outstanding
when one considers that many of these boys play
representative sport in different areas. At least 13
different boys represented the school in 1st team
tournaments. Individually, Rory Nicholson and
Korbyn Chapman played JRPC (Junior Regional
Performance Centre) and Harvey Morland was
announced the Uber Player of the Tournament
at the National Finals.
The U12A team completed an amazing season.
In 11-a-side fixtures they only lost once, with
several players missing. The team also claimed
many notable victories against other schools'
first teams.
The highlight of the season was victory at the
King’s Bruton Tournament; coming out on top
against Chafyn Grove and Hazlegrove.
01 1st XI qualified for the
Nationals and reached the
semi-finals 02 Our U8 boys
were runners-up in the Millfield
Prep U9B Tournament
The U11 boys quickly became tournament
specialists and the master of the short game.
Having struggled in all but two of the school
fixtures, people did not expect us to do well in
the IAPS competition. Being the underdogs helped
us and they easily qualified for the National Finals
where they battled hard. The team had a good run in
the tournament and this was good preparation for
next time they venture up to the National Finals.
There were notable highs for the Junior teams,
with the U8A boys winning the majority of their
matches and amassing a mighty 73 goals, and
the U10A boys came away with gold at the
Millfield Prep Tournament.

Girls' Hockey
Our U13A team were delighted to win the
Blundell’s Tournament and Annabelle Davis
was invited to play at JDC, JAC and JPRC level.
The U12 girls played some fantastic team hockey.
Attacks started right from the very back, even
from our goalkeeper. They played in a highly
sporting manner and were certainly firm but fair
on the pitch. They were disappointed to not give
a true account of themselves at the National
Finals but this has simply made them even
more determined for next year.
Thirteen girls had the chance to play in various
tournaments for the U11A team with the squad
rotating to ensure development opportunities
for all players. The team won the following
tournaments: County, West of England, South
West IAPS, King’s Bruton, Clifton, and at the
National IAPS Finals, the girls were undefeated.
In regular fixtures and tournaments the girls
played an incredible 56 matches and in normal
time were undefeated. Their team spirit was
inspiring and we look forward to seeing their
progress as they move up the school.
The U9A girls went from strength to strength
with their technical skills and understanding.
On their way to the pitch for their first match
of the season, they had a few words of
encouragement and team photo with England
Rugby Captain, Chris Robshaw, which must have
done the trick as they came away 2-0 winners.
They went on to finish their season with gold
medals at the Hazlegrove Tournament.

Multi-Sport
It has been a very successful year for Multi-Sports;
growing to incorporate many disciplines including
Modern Pentathlon and our first Triathlon.
The season started with the South West Biathlon
where our teams won four age groups. This was a
regular trend throughout the season and our pupils
secured victory in many other events and created
some National Champions along the way. Some
pivotal performances came from Polly Painter,
Aurelio Calipa, Alex Painter and Ruby Smith.
We were proud that a number of our pupils
represented Great Britain in events around the
world. Archie Williams and Esme Hughes both
qualified to compete for Great Britain at the
Biathle World Tour. Aurelio Calipa and Sophie
Mabbs represented Great Britain in the World
Biathle Championships in Guatemala. Charlotte
Taylor and Archie Williams travelled to Cascina,
Italy, having qualified to represent Pentathlon
Great Britain in the Biathle World Series.
50
We also saw tetrathlon success with Sophie
Mabbs and Martine Scott, both victorious at their
respective events. Individually, Martine was selected
onto the England Talent Programme for pentathlon,
and along with Polly Painter and Annabelle Davis,
won the National Team Biathlon title.
Alex Painter became National Triathlon Champion
and Niall and Jasmine Caley had a number of
successes with Niall leading the South West
Triathlon series.
The most recent addition to the Multi-Sport
calendar was the IAPS Triathlon. Millfield Prep
had a successful day, achieving five podium
positions and delivering three National IAPS
Champions. A tremendous achievement considering
it was the first triathlon for many of our pupils.

Riding
Without doubt the highlight of our equestrian
calendar was the inaugural Millfield Horse Trials,
our first British Eventing competition. It was a
fantastic occasion to unveil our brand new cross
country course designed by Adrian Ditcham, 2012
Olympic cross country course builder. As Danny
Anholt, Director of Equestrian Sport at Millfield
noted, the grounds were immaculately presented
and Glastonbury Tor provided an iconic backdrop
to the event. A special prize was donated by a
Millfield parent for the Best Placed Student in
Full Time Education which was won in the BE100
section by former Millfield Prep pupil, Talullah
Bartlett. Amelia Harris came 3rd in the BE90
Open and Darcy Zander was placed 7th in her class.
There were some excellent individual successes
this year. Notably, Flo Norris qualified for the
Horse of the Year Show 2014 and rode extremely
well on her pony, Snapwater Jack, jumping every
fence clear and was one of five riders in a 1.25m
high jump-off. Her performance saw her take
3rd place in the competition. Capitalising on her
success, she continued her form during the year
and quickly qualified, on her pony Barney, for
HOYS 2015 in the autumn.
Izzy Chesterman and her pony Flyby Magic
qualified for The British Showjumping National
Championships in August. Izzy rode one of
three treble clears in a class of 26 riders at the
British Novice second round at Badgworth.
This placed her 3rd and automatically qualified
her for the National competition.

In Class 2 the team came 2nd and Amelia Harris
was 2nd individually. We qualified for Addington
in the autumn term, finishing 8th in the country in
the 75cm JWS and 9th in the country in the 80cm
show jumping. Our riders went on to qualify in the
75cm JWS for the 2015 championships held at
Addington at the end of October 2015
The NSEA Grassroots qualifier and final at Millfield
Prep was for those pupils who haven’t competed
much before and perhaps don’t have their own
pony. It was an enjoyable event that produced
some good results with the Class 3b team coming

did well with some achieving personal bests.

matches this season and it is still an extremely
popular sport with our Juniors. We have produced
11 teams throughout the school. For the first time
in a number of years, all of our annual Millfield Prep
A and B Tournaments were played.
The U13A, U12A, U12B and U9A teams all won their
respective Millfield Prep Tournaments with U11B,
U8A and U13B runners-up.
Congratulations to the U11A team on
becoming runners-up at the IAPS National
Rounders competition.

Having qualified for the National Jet U13 Rounders Finals in the summer
holidays we discovered that several players were understandably
committed to family holidays. A number of boarders made huge efforts
to attend and some younger pupils, Caitlin McLoughlin, Rosa Launder
and Rebecca Stowell, were inducted into the team.
On a scorching hot day we played the semi-final against Terrington Hall.
Batting first, we led at the half way stage before setting an imposing final
total of 48½ rounders. Olivia Besant scored 13½ rounders and Harri
Dimdore-Miles scored 7 rounders in the second innings. A clinical fielding
display by Molly Seal, Elodie Jolliffe and Loveday Hedgcock, along with
some magnificent bowling from Ollie Hayes, saw us into the final against
a very strong Bedford team. Despite trailing after the first innings, we
pulled clear with a wonderful batting display, this time by Rebecca
Stowell with 5 rounders and Annabelle Davis 10 rounders. Inspirational
bowling, an excellent performance by Georgia Dolan as back stop
(Georgia definitely had the catch of the day), catching and ground fielding
saw us crowned National Champions by a convincing margin. This victory
ensured a notable double alongside our all-conquering boys’ cricket team.
It was a true team effort but a special mention goes to Olivia Besant for
being named Batter of the Tournament and to Annabelle Davis who was
announced Player of Tournament.

Rugby
Back in early September the term started with
celebrations to mark the opening of the new Sports
Pavilion. Some of Millfield’s most famous old boys
were in school to help us do this. Gareth Edwards
(who many consider to be one of the greatest rugby
players of all time) and Matt Perry, who played for
Bath, England and the British Lions, were here as
was Chris Robshaw, the current England captain.

Rugby Sevens

In the Bryanston Sevens the U13 team qualified
for the final which they narrowly lost. The U11
team won the plate tournament.
At the Port Regis Sevens our 1st VII won the plate
tournament, defeating Kingswood in the final.
The 1st VII lost in the final of the plate competition
of The Downs Sevens.
On the same day as The Downs tournament, our
U12 VII entered the Warwick Sevens and played
incredibly well to win, for the very first time in our
history, this prestigious tournament.

Season Round-up
1st XV were blessed with a fair amount of pace, power
and skill. However, a series of injuries to players plagued
the team meaning continuity in selection was difficult.
2nd XV enjoyed an encouraging season playing some good
rugby and winning many of their matches quite comfortably.
3rd XV must be congratulated on having an unbeaten season.
U12A were a very talented team and the highlight of their
season was winning the Taunton Prep U12 Tournament.
The team did not concede a single point that day.
U12C must be congratulated on having an unbeaten season.
U11A were semi-finalists at Monkton Combe Super 12s
and won the plate at the Wellington Tournament.
At the Caldicott Sevens our 1st VII were
eliminated in the quarter finals. Our U12 VII played
brilliantly to win the 2nd VII tournament, defeating
Caldicott in the final.
At the Millfield Sevens the 1st VII progressed
through to the final which was played against
Moulsford. The boys put in a great performance
to win by 17 points to 7. The U11 team also played
well but unfortunately lost in the semi-final.
After a super opening day at the Rosslyn Park
Sevens where we won our group and defeated
Cheltenham in the play-off stages, we qualified for
the second day of the tournament. Unfortunately,
we were unable to replicate the form from the
previous day and we were subsequently eliminated
from the competition.
U10 narrowly lost in the final of the Bruton Tournament.
U9 will continue to improve over the coming years.
U8 have been very successful, winning all of their matches.

Squash
Seb Sawrey-Cookson was delighted to become
the Somerset U11 Squash Champion. Later, at the
IAPS National Squash Championship, he played
in the U11 age group and got through the gruelling
first round matches (eight in total over a day and
a half), qualifying for the main draw. Seb lost in the
quarter-finals to the eventual finalist but went into
the plate competition, which he deservedly won.

Sailing
The year was eventful, and a good starting point
for next year’s sailing programme. In the early
autumn we were sailing every Wednesday at Durleigh
Reservoir, near Bridgwater, then in early November,
sailed in the IAPS Inland Regatta in Oxford and with
Kyle Davey and Olly Douglas taking 4th place,
it was a nice finish to the term’s sailing.
Also at the IAPS Nationals, Jamie Baird and
Robert Membrey worked well in the U13 Open
Doubles category, having never played together
before the tournament. They played with skill and
determination to reach the final, winning 17-15 in
the fifth set of an extremely exciting semi-final.
The final proved to be a step too far and they were
beaten by a well prepared team from HHK; who
had been practising together against their second
pair (beaten by Jamie and Robert in the semi-final)
every week since the previous September.
In the Open Singles, Jamie was pleased with his
performance throughout the three days. It was
a tough few days playing 13 games in all, but he
gained in confidence. With Millfield’s Director of
Squash, Ian Thomas, in his corner on the last day
he was delighted to finish runner-up to the British
Number 3 from Wycliffe, having battled through
a tough semi-final.

In January we benefitted from the donation of two
brand new RS Feva sailing boats – good for training
and racing at a national level (IAPS events are raced
in Laser Picos). In February we started the move
from Durleigh Reservoir to Chew Valley Lake. The
main reasons for this move were that Chew Valley
Lake is bigger, has better facilities, we can keep our
own boats there, we can train whenever we want
(including the winter) and Millfield train there,
providing continuity.
04
In March we completed the move to Chew Valley
Lake and bought three Laser Picos to add to the
two RS Fevas. In the summer term we sailed each
Wednesday, race training before the IAPS Coastal
Regatta in Weymouth. The field was very strong and
we left with a 21st (Kyle Davey and Charlie Powell),
26th (Ciaran Donoghue and Olly Douglas) and
a 31st (Freddie Poore and Sam Wardell) from 44
boats racing. After half term, we continued to have
fun on the water, and completed a few more skills
from the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme.

Our swimmers had a fantastic record breaking year with Maddie CalvesbertSharp, Alice Gouldby, Alex Painter, Ruby Smith and Huw Williams setting
new school records.
At the Somerset County Championships the squad were crowned the Top Age
Group swimming club in the county.
A record number of 21 swimmers qualified for the South West Championships.
This event is highly ranked in the swimming year and only contains the best
club swimmers in the South West for each age and stroke. The squad won
14 gold, 11 silver and 11 bronze medals and the top swimmers in the 11 year
age group were Alex Painter and Maddie Calvesbert-Sharp.
Qualifying for the British Nationals is extremely tough, with just the
top 24 swimmers in the country going through and then the top 20 being
invited to the ASA (English). We congratulated Alice Gouldby, Polly Painter,
Alexander Sargeant, Jami Schlueter and Huw Williams for being invited.

the Aegon National Schools at Exeter in November.
The teams included Matthew Crofts, Ollie
Monteiro, Luke Tweed, Jamie Thomas, Emily
Thomas, Annabelle Davis, Isabel Bartlett and
Tara Ellis. They made it through the county stages
of the competition having beaten Wellington and
King’s Hall in the girls’ competition, and Queen’s
College, King’s Hall and Millfield B team in the boys’.
Luke Tweed represented Somerset in the U14
County Cup, Bobby Mulvey represented Somerset
in the U10 County Cup and Caitlin McLoughlin and
William Smith represented Kent and Warwickshire
respectively in the U12 County Cup with both teams
reaching the National finals.
01

During the summer holidays, William Smith was
runner-up in 12U in the Warwickshire County Closed
and won the 12U doubles title. Annabelle Davis won
the 14U Berkshire County Closed and won two
Grade 3 titles. Caitlin McLoughlin won four Grade 3

County Closed Singles and 4th in the doubles. James
Champion came 3rd in the Green Somerset County
Closed and Andrew Hewitt reached the Green
Doubles final. William Thomas came 3rd in the

Our teams competed in the Aegon National Schools
Championships, which is an U18 competition. The
girls beat Leweston in the first round in an exciting
tiebreak shoot-out 7-6, then lost to Talbot Heath B
Team and the boys lost to a strong Sherborne side.
Annabelle Davis reached the finals of the U16
Harpenden School Girls Doubles Tournament,
losing narrowly to Queenswood.
We entered several teams in the Aegon Team Tennis
Competition against local Somerset clubs. The U8A
mixed team won Division 1 and the U8B team won
Division 2. The U9A, U10A and U12A boys’ team also
won Division 1 of their competitions.
The Mini Red, Orange and Green mixed teams had
several friendly fixtures against Writhlington, All
Hallows and Warminster and we also ran regular
LTA Grade 6 Mini Red, Orange, Green and Yellow
ball Tournaments at weekends. A highlight was
taking 16 Mini Red and Orange players to Taunton
Indoor Courts to play their Aegon teams. They
played virtually non-stop matches for five hours
and the final result was 7-3 to our Mini Orange A
team and 9-7 to our Mini Red A team.
IAPS Tennis 2015
During the summer holidays 28 players represented Millfield in the annual
IAPS Tennis Tournament, which Millfield hosted for the first time in 20 years.
In the U14 boys’ singles, seven out of our team of eight got through to the
play-offs. Luke Tweed and Jamie Thomas both reached the quarter-finals of
the U14 singles, losing to the Number 2 and Number 1 seeds respectively and
Will Smith reached the semi-finals, losing to the eventual winner. Luke and
Jamie also reached the semi-finals of the U14 boys’ doubles.
In the U14 girls’ singles all four girls got through to the play-offs. Harriet
Dimdore-Miles and Olivia Besant won the U14 Consolation doubles in
a very exciting deciding tiebreak. Annabelle Davis and Isabel Bartlett
reached the semi-final of the doubles and Annabelle reached the semi-final
of the singles.
In the U12 boys’ singles, Bobby Mulvey, Andrew Hewitt and James
Champion reached the knock out stages, with Andrew and Bobby making
it through to the final stages of the doubles competition. James Champion
and Freddie Turnell reached the U12 Consolation Doubles final.
In the U12 girls’ singles four out of our team of eight reached the play-offs.
Rebecca Stowell reached the quarter final and Caitlin McLoughlin reached
the final of the U12 singles.
Together Caitlin and Rebecca won the U12 girls doubles title in a very tight
match, beating Francesca Davis (Annabelle’s sister) and her partner, who is
joining Millfield Prep next year.

At the South West Schools competition in
December two of our teams and three individuals
qualified to compete in the Southern Zonal Schools
competition. Here our U11 girls reached 3rd
place and narrowly missed the Nationals. In May,
the full complement of our trampolining squad,
28 pupils in all, travelled to Croydon for the IAPS
National Trampolining Competition. For many of
them it was their first experience of competing
and being judged. The squad came away with some
excellent results, including two 1st placed teams
and an individual win for Eloise Littman.
