Assessment Information
Red List Category & Criteria:
Vulnerable B1ab(i,iii) ver 3.1
Year Published:
2010
Date Assessed:
June 30, 2009
Justification:
Bronchocela smaragdina has been assessed as Vulnerable because it is only known from the Annam
Highlands, with an estimated extent of occurrence less than 20,000 km². It is experiencing a continued
decline in the extent and quality of its habitat. Further research and monitoring of this species is needed
to ensure that a higher threat category is not triggered. The establishment and management of new
protected areas is needed to provide this species with further safeguards from habitat loss and
degradation.
Geographic Range
Range Description:
This species has only been found in the southern Annam Highlands in southern Viet Nam and eastern
Cambodia. The area in which this species is distributed is approximately 19,585 km².
Country Occurrence:
Native: Cambodia; Viet Nam

Population
Prior to the recent record from Phnom Nam Lyr Wildife Sanctuary, only three specimens were known:
two from Mohout in Cambodia, and a third obtained by Smith (1935) at Dalat on the Langbian Plateau in
southern Viet Nam (Stuart et al. 2006).
Current Population Trend: Unknown
Habitat and Ecology (see Appendix for additional information)
This species is found in the southern Annamites montane rainforest. A recent specimen was taken from
deciduous dipterocarp forest with a grassy under-storey.
Systems: Terrestrial
Threats (see Appendix for additional information)
This species' habitat is threatened by habitat loss caused by agricultural industry and expansion of
plantations.
Conservation Actions (see Appendix for additional information)
There are no known species-specific conservation measures in place for this species, however, in places
its distribution coincides with protected areas, for example the Phnom Nam Lyr Wildife Sanctuary in
Cambodia. Further research on the population range, biology and ecology, and threats of this species is
suggested. Population and habitat monitoring is recommended. The establishment and management of
new protected areas is suggested to provide further safeguards for this species.
