Pastor’s Column
October 20/21
Dear Parish Family,
As a hospital chaplain, most of my visits were to patients and their families during their
hospital stays. Occasionally I was called upon to counsel patients who were seen by our doctors
in the hospital clinics. That is how I met a woman I will call Jean.
Jean had just received the bad news that her unborn child had a deformity and would almost certainly be born with severe mental retardation. Her doctors advised that she considered
termination because they thought the child's problems would cause a lifetime of suffering.
When Jean told them that she was Catholic and was always against abortion, they advised her
to talk her decision over with a chaplain.
Jean was engaged at the time and she had two children from a previous marriage. She
did not have an easy life but was trying very hard to get her life together and had high hopes for
the future. When her fiancé heard the doctors report, he announced that he would have no part
of this and their plans were off. Things had gone from bad to worse. As she told her tale, I wondered what I could say to give her some hope and courage. I never got the chance. As she finished her story, she took a deep breath and spoke words I remember to this day. She said. “I
absolutely have to have this child. I have made a lot of mistakes in my life but if I look for an
escape from my problems now, I will be an awful example to my children. Things are bad, but if
I don’t stick to what I know to be right, they are not going to get any better.”
I wish I could tell you that her one courageous decision made everything OK. Life is
rarely that simple. Her little boy was beautiful but his mental and medical problems were enormous. Medical problems led to financial problems and day to day challenges were overwhelming. Jean could never quite seem to get ahead of it all. Was there a bright spot? Yes. She
reached out to her parish community and I was so proud of the way that they responded to her.
People gave her time. They gave her practical help with everyday problems of child care and
homemaking. They helped her fight her many battles. They were there for her and she was not
alone.
It’s good to stand up for life and to be part of a
community that reaches out to those who are trying to
do what is right.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. Mike Vetrano
New Ministries For Sacred Hearts
One of the most important ministries of a pastor is to invite people to discover and use
their gifts. Here are three ministries I would like to begin and a beginning description of
what they do and what gifts they require. If you are interested please drop Fr. Mike a
note:
A Ministry of Consolation
One of the most profound spiritual moments in peoples’ lives is
celebrating the loss of a loved one. A ministry of consolation
would:



Help people plan the funeral Mass
Be present to welcome family and friends at Mass
Help as Eucharistic ministers and lectors at funerals
Wedding Ministry
The celebration of weddings is a very important
ministry here. The beauty of the church attracts many
who wish to celebrate the beginning of their married
lives. A wedding ministry would:




Help with rehearsals and planning
Welcome couples and families on the day of wedding
Prepare our church for the celebrations
Help with Eucharistic ministry at nuptial Masses
MAIN ALTAR FLOWERS for this week were given in loving memory of Elsie &
James McCulley & Adam & Ann Rosko by Mr. & Mrs. Constantine Rosko.
BLESSED MOTHER’ S & ST. JOSEPH’S ALTAR FLOWERS were given on the
occasion of Peter Bernagozzi & Kendra Lach’s wedding in loving memory of their
grandparents and Fred Bernagozzi.
Anyone who would like to donate altar flowers in memory of a loved one or for a special intention

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
In the eyes of many, the papacy is a peculiar institution. Still bedecked with some of
the regalia of medieval princes, contemporary popes have worked to define their role
in ways that give them influence over the world both within and outside the Church.
The trappings of royalty, never really a good fit for the successors of Peter, could
render a pope distant and irrelevant. On the other hand, the tendency of many to think
of the pope as if he were the CEO of a modern corporation is also inaccurate.
St. Gregory the Great, himself a pope, first called the pope “the servant of the
servants of God.” He is “first among equals” among other bishops, who by tradition
exercise significant authority within their own dioceses, not depending on the pope’s
authority. This arrangement often puzzles those accustomed to a top-to-bottom “chain
of command.” History has seen popes of many styles, but most strive to live up to
Gregory’s definition. Perhaps today’s Gospel puts it all into the best perspective:
“Whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.” Pray for the pope this
week.

Time spent with Edith Stein will offer insights into the life and spirituality
of this Jewish woman who became Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Her journey
to Catholicism convinced her that Jesus was the “truth” for which she had searched.
Later, she would see her arrest by the Nazis as an opportunity to serve Christ in the
least of his brothers and sisters by sacrificing herself for her people. Always a model
of hope and humility, showing resilience in the face of difficulty and persecution, she
offered herself up to God’s loving will. In Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, we see
that trust and hope go hand in hand.

By Juan J. Sosa, Pbro., from Liturgia y
Canción 2012 © 2011, OCP. All rights reserved
By María
