If you have any questions please contact Denice Kovanda [email protected] 2 Third Grade News from Mrs. Weber Learning about matter has been the focus for Grade Two in science. Initially, the students learned about the three states of matter. As they gained knowledge through experiments and discussions, students discovered ways matter can be altered through physical and chemical changes. The difference between mixtures and solutions was also discussed. In Social Studies, second grade studied about immigrants and what countries their ancestors came from. In class, students viewed landmarks around the world and learned their significance via a NearPod presentation. Students discussed how important communication is between countries and listed the various ways in which people communicate. 3 March NEWS Kindergarten Registration, Move-Up Day and Elementary Field Day ALL Coming In May If you plan to enroll your child in kindergarten in the fall of 2017, please plan to attend our Kindergarten Round Up which will also include a "Move-Up Day" for all elementary grades. Mrs. Kroll March is Nebraska Youth Arts Month and to help celebrate and recognize our young artists we participate in some exhibits, contests and events. Tara Mueller’s artwork has been selected to be exhibited and judged in the Nebraska Young Artists Award program. Tara’s owl mosaic, pictured below, will be on display at the Nebraska E isentrager-Howard gallery at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from March 10- 24. Also the State Capitol Nebraska Youth Art Month Celebration on March 25 will honor the work of 5th grader Savana Krupicka and 7th grader Rebecca Krupicka. Both girls are very talented and well deserving of this award as they put in extra time to complete and create artwork that shows their artistic skill and talent. Exeter-Milligan art students have submitted many artworks to compete at the Exeter area GFWC art contest. The first place winners in each category will go on to District Contest and the 1st place winners from Districts will go to state. Ribbons will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place pieces in each category and grade level. With 16 high school art students and 15 7th grade artists, we were able to send more than eighty works of art that range from painting and printmaking to pottery, mosaics and mixed media collages. The Kindergarten-6th grade also participate in the contest. The kids are very proud of their artwork and they do a great job congratulating and encouraging each other when they win. When asking some high school students what they have learned in art class this year, Nick Hayek responded, “I’ve learned how to express myself more through something different than just words”, Jacy Schluetter says, “I’ve learned to have a storyline in your art, always have a reason for what you are doing.” When asking them if they feel that art is important Jos Cremers says, “I can let my creativity go my own way, sometimes it calms me down, so it is a little important to me.” Katie Moody says, “Art is very important to me. It opens my mind and clears my thoughts. It helps me to see the beauty in life. It helps me to express myself when I can't express myself in any other way because people don't always understand. Art puts unexplainable feelings into a perspective that other people can understand. To me, that's everything. It gives me life. It brings happiness that not only I, but others, can enjoy.” Quinton Behrens adds, “Yes, art is important, because it allows me to express myself.” Wyatt Motis says it is important to him because it is for a grade and it is calming. Jacy says, “Yes. As every person on the Earth, I feel happiness, sadness, and any other emotion. Sometimes expressing my thoughts in words is hard, and art is my escape to tip off those emotions. Wyatt would recommend art class to a friend because it is fun. Jos Cremers would also recommend art class to a friend, he says, “Yes, I would. Simply because it can help your overall skills and it is never bad to know a little bit about art.” Katie Moody also agrees, “Art helps you to de-stress. It helps get all of your feelings out on paper when you don't know how to get them out in words. Art pushes your mind and imagination. It pushes you to be better. It helps open your mind to be more creative.” FAMILY ART NIGHT is scheduled for Tuesday March 21 and once again will showcase the talented young artist’s of Exeter-Milligan! With the help of some wonderful 7th-12th grader volunteers we will once again have a FUN evening planned for families to participate in Celebrating the JOY of Showing our Creative Side through Art stations and activities that everyone will be sure to enjoy! After checking in on the crime scene, I asked Lord Capulet about his daughter, and he told me the sorrow she was going through previously, and all the different mood changes Citizens of Verona were awakened to the she was having. He didn’t rule out the fact that shocking news that Romeo Montague and she very possibly could have killed herself. Juliet Capulet were found dead in a curious That very statement opens many more doors double suicide. Also found dead, in the city to possibilities. As I scan the Prince Calls for and the Times reporters have been sword next to the corpse of Peace between Paris, I see initials on the following the investigation closely. Rival Families handle of the sword, “RM”. Police Report This gives away that this weapon was in fact Romeo’s, but it doesn’t by Jacy Schlueter give a certain answer that he murdered Paris. Hello, I am Verona’s finest crime scene My instincts tell me that it wasn’t Juliet. Yet as I investigator from Verona Police Department look at Romeo’s unharmed body, there are (VPD). Today, I am assigned to the Capuletalso bloodstains on his shirt; that is not of his Montague case. My report will be investigating body. Perhaps Juliet’s blood? No, there is the three deaths of Romeo Montague, Juliet none of her blood leading to where he rests, Capulet, and Counter Paris. Right as I but there are small drops of blood leading from approach this case, I picture a violent, the tomb bed they’re both on, to Paris. This gruesome murder-suicide. tells me more then enough. I went to the crime scene and it was one Am I seeing this correctly? A small potion of the most awful things I’ve ever seen. The bottle in Romeo’s hand! How absurd, so this is energy in the room is full of sorrow, regret. It’s most definitely a suicide. He wouldn’t have so bloody. As a crime scene investigator, we been forced to drink that, or tricked. He was a have to rule out options and figure out what the smart boy. Either way, someone outside this true clues are and what they mean. One of the case has given Romeo an illegal poison. So biggest confusion in this case is the bloody I’m very sure Romeo drank the potion by dagger by Juliet. It seems possible to be selfhimself. As I check Romeo’s hand and arms, I inflicted, but until I figure out the cause of Murder Shocks City see that he has bloodied hands, almost as if he was gripping a sword. Aha! A bruise on his cheek. Almost as if he had been punched. Juliet’s hands are not bruised from punching someone, but Paris’s knuckles are bloodied. Juliet’s palms have small blisters, almost as if getting skin scraped while holding the wooden dagger too tight. It’s all beginning to make sense! Romeo’s death was a suicide. Now I must piece this together and find out motives. Romeo and Juliet were reportedly secretly married and in love, according to Friar Laurence. Of course everybody knows about the feud between the two richest households, Capulets and Montagues. There is no possible way they would ever be able to be together, so perhaps that is why they acted so drastically. Juliet daggered herself after being faked dead, and Romeo drank poison for the thought of infinite true love. Paris was betrothed to Juliet, when he saw that Romeo has snuck in the tomb, he came to stop him from causing any damage. They fought, and Romeo won. He then poisoned himself after Juliet’s dead body; a very tragic end. After Romeo was dead, Juliet awoke from her fake death, and saw that Romeo was dead; and her lover is gone forever. They must have been planning to run away before this tragic event. Out of pure remorse and over-emotional impulse, she daggered herself. Who is guilty? By: Ryan Sharp In my opinion, Romeo, Juliet and Tybalt are to blame for the actions that lead to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo is mainly to blame though. Tybalt was the cause of Romeo’s worst action. Juliet also led Romeo to some of his actions. Romeo’s first offense was killing Tybalt. He killed Tybalt in revenge for killing Mercutio. Romeo killing Tybalt results in Tybalt’s death and Romeo’s banishment. When Romeo gets banned, he can no longer see Juliet. He was the one who started the fight with Tybalt in the first place. The prince is the one who bans Romeo. Romeo is threatened with death if he returns to Verona. Since Romeo can’t see Juliet anymore, he tries to return to see her. While Romeo was gone, Juliet tried to come up with a plan. Juliet obtains a potion from Friar Laurence that makes her seem dead. Romeo thinks he is innocent. He is not innocent because he killed Tybalt. He also killed Paris when he was trying to get to Juliet. When he got to Juliet he killed himself. Then Juliet woke up and also killed herself. These are the reasons I think Romeo is the most blameworthy person. Tybalt did not have to die. Also, he didn’t have to kill himself when he got to Juliet. This is why I think Romeo is the cause of all the heartache in this story. Romeo shares blame because of his meltdown after Tybalt killed Mercutio. The top of the blame list is Lord Capulet and Lord Montague because they have disliked each other for no reason. In conclusion this tragedy by key actions of Mercutio, Romeo, and Tybalt. These key actions set off this tragedy. The biggest to blame is Lord Capulet and Lord Montague. Evaluation of a tragedy By Caleb Horne The death of Romeo and Juliet was a tragedy. There were many people that we could have blamed for this. Here are some people that have influenced the death of Romeo and Juliet Mercutio, Tybalt, Lord Capulet, Lord Montague, and Count Paris. Those are the people that did something in the past to make Romeo and Juliet kill themselves. The first key point is that Mercutio was trash-talking Tybalt in the square and started a fight. Romeo tried stopping the fight by telling Tybalt, “that I love you but I can’t tell u why”. Tybalt killed Mercutio, which leads to Romeo chasing down Tybalt and killing him. Tybalt’s crisis moment was when Mercutio dared him to draw and he did. Mercutio crisis moment was when he realized he was dyeing. Romeo didn't know Mercutio got badly cut because Mercutio was saying,” Ay, ay, a scratch a scratch.” Romeos crisis moment was when he said, ”O, I am a fortune's fool.” after he killed Tybalt. Mercutio is to blame because he ran his mouth in the town square and started the fight with Tybalt. Tybalt is to blame because he sent a letter to Romeo asking Romeo to fight him. “The continuance of their parents rage, Which, but their children's end, naught could remove.” Cause and Effect: Vengeance By: Eli Johnson Romeo wanted revenge on Tybalt because Tybalt killed Romeo’s friend Mercutio in a fight that Mercutio started. It didn’t go as planned for Romeo because he killed Tybalt then got banished from Verona and couldn’t see Juliet. Then Juliet’s father lord Capulet was going to make her marry Paris so Juliet took a potion that made everybody think she was dead but she wasn’t. Romeo found out then got a potion and went to her grave and drank the potion that killed him. Romeo wants revenge on Tybalt for three reasons. He wants revenge because Tybalt doesn't want Romeo to marry Juliet because Romeo is a Montague. He also wants revenge because Tybalt killed Mercutio then Romeo killed Tybalt. He also wanted revenge because after Tybalt killed Mercutio everything went wrong for him. Romeo made a lot of bad choices that made the rest of his life terrible. He made one good decision that was also kind of a bad one it was a good decision because he met Juliet at the party at her house then it was bad because then Tybalt wanted to start a fight. When he was in the fight he decided to kill Tybalt and that was a terrible decision. He had one worse idea than all of his idea which was him killing himself because he thought Juliet was dead. There were a lot of consequences to the choices Romeo made. When he decided to go to the party there was a good consequence and a bad consequence the good one was he met Juliet and they eventually got married the bad consequence was that Mercutio was killed because Tybalt wanted to fight because Romeo came to the party uninvited. The bad consequence when Romeo killed Tybalt was that Romeo got banished from Verona and everything went downhill from there. The worst decision of them all was he killing himself the consequence was him dying and Juliet waking up then killing herself. Romeo made a lot of terrible decisions that cost him his life. First he decided to go to the party that made Tybalt mad and made him want to fight Romeo because of that Mercutio died. Then Romeo decided to kill Tybalt that got Romeo banished from Verona. Then he thought that Juliet was dead when she was just in a deep sleep, which made him kill himself. My name is Doctor, Max Zeleny, I was Who is Romeo? The Experts Weigh in. asked by lord Montague to do a report on his son because is health is not the best it can be. He is exhibiting violence, broken heartedness, and short- tempered person. The reason I know that Romeo is shorttempered is because he when Tybalt went off on Mercutio, and killed him he went and killed Tybalt. I am feared that Romeo is going to go off half-cocked at someone and kill someone else when he shouldn't. He is a very out going great person but sometimes he just doesn't think the right way he should. I also have been told that Romeo is a very emotional person. Romeo was agreeing to marry someone he had only seen one time, and fell in love. When Romeo got the news that his wife died (Juliet) he went off and bought poison to kill himself because he just lost his one love. Romeo is a very loving and caring person, but he needs to understand that some things in life happen for a reason! I have also been informed that Romeo is a hot head in many different ways! This was brought up when his friend was put to death by a different guy, He reacted very poorly going off with a hothead and killing the other guy. He is a very loving and caring guy but needs to fix his actions of being to aggressive on people and so hot headed! After studying Romeo, I am very worried about him because he could come off to someone else on something that he shouldn't be doing. My diagnostics of him is that he should take a stress pill every day and a depression pill everyday for 6 months straight, and then if that doesn’t help He should come in and we will try to treat him here for anger management. I am Dr. Murphy, and Montague has asked me to review Romeo’s psychological state. Montague is worried about his son’s mental condition, as Romeo has been acting very distant lately. It is my task to figure out what is troubling the young man. From the research I have so far, I think that it is likely that Romeo is impulsive, impatient, and broken-hearted. Romeo always seems to make decisions without considering the consequences. Romeo doesn’t seem to realize that his decisions will have long-term effects on his life and on other people’s lives. I have discovered evidence that he is highly impulsive. Romeo kissed Juliet after a short conversation. He seemed to have decided that he was in love a few short minutes after they met. It is difficult to create a meaningful relationship so hastily. Later on, Romeo killed Tybalt right after Mercutio died. Romeo’s sudden anger caused him to do something irreversible, and he suffered the consequences when the Prince banished him from Verona. Once Romeo sets his mind to something, there is no stopping him. This has resulted in very careless behaviors. For Romeo’s psychological state to improve, he first needs to try to be less impulsive. In addition to being impulsive, waiting is a weakness of Romeo’s. He has proven to be very impatient. This was first evident when he couldn’t wait to marry Juliet. Although they had just met, Romeo thought it was necessary that they get married immediately. It is hard to say if Romeo and Juliet were even in love at this point, although they seemed to think they were. Romeo’s impatience was also demonstrated after he was banished when he thought that death would be better than being away from Juliet. At this point, there was still a good chance that they were going to be able to reunite, but Romeo couldn’t wait. If he wasn’t with Juliet at that moment, life was miserable. Romeo makes hasty conclusions and struggles to be away from Juliet for even short amounts of time. This is not healthy, and the young man needs to address this issue. Finally, my research has lead me to the conclusion that Romeo is brokenhearted. First it was Rosaline; then it was Juliet. When Romeo was in love with Rosaline, he could barely function because she didn’t love him. He suddenly got over this when he met Juliet, but this didn’t mean that his heart was permanently mended. When he thought that Juliet was dead, he wanted to kill himself. Romeo is easily saddened. If the person he loves doesn’t love him, he acts distant and depressed. When the person he loves dies, he wants to die as well. For Romeo, failed love is catastrophic. This can make him suicidal, which is a scary thought. After reviewing Romeo’s psychological state, I have concluded that he is a very troubled young man. I have prescribed therapy and counseling to help him get through these hard times. Please know that I am here to help. If you have any questions or additional concerns, feel free to let me know. I am very concerned for Romeo’s well being. However, if he can get over his impulsiveness, impatience, and broken heart, I feel that he could reach his full potential as a person. Teens Fail to Find True Love By Anna Sluka Are Romeo and Juliet really in love? To be truly in love you have to be compassionate, sincere/loyal and loving. We will find out if Romeo and Juliet have what it takes to be in love. Romeo and Juliet were young and naive so they thought they were in love but I really don’t think they were, because they don't really know what love was. One aspect of true love is being compassionate. This means showing kindness and caring for someone so deeply. Romeo and Juliet to me didn’t show anything that popped out at me that showed they were compassionate. They died for each other cause they “loved” each other so much (A.5 S.3). “Here’s to my love! {Drinks the potion} O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die. {Falls to the ground and dies},”Romeo said. At this point aren’t loyal then it’s not true love. Romeo was dead and Juliet was just waking The last aspect of true love is just simply up. When she woke up and found Romeo dead to be loving. Loving means that you are feeling she was very sad. So she said her last words-or showing love or great care. To me Romeo ”O happy dagger! This is thy sheath; there rust, and Juliet didn’t show this, I mean in a way and let me die, Juliet said.” She said those last they did. They were loving to each other even words and stabbed herself and she died right though they knew their families were enemies. beside Romeo. Now just because you die for To me that is not really loving cause to me that someone doesn’t mean that that is showing says they were only loving each other just any compassion at all. Romeo and Juliet both because their parents hated each other. But it died because they would rather be dead than also shows that they love each other because be a part, to me that is not showing anything, it even their families are enemies they still found just shows that they are dumb. I mean it was ways to love each other(A.2 S.2). Here is a sweet that they didn’t want to live if the little talk that they had. Romeo said, “My life other was dead, but when Romeo killed were better ended by their hate than death himself Juliet was still alive if he would of prorogued, wanting of thy love. “This means been patient none of that would've ever that he would rather died from their hatred than happened. have my postponed if Juliet didn’t love him. Another aspect of true love is being Then Juliet said, “You might think I’ve fallen in sincere/loyal to your partner. Being love too easily and that I am too forward, but I sincere/loyal to your partner means that you will be truer to you than those who hide their are real and truthful. It basically means that feelings.” I love that they stuck behind their you are trustworthy and you wouldn’t do parents back in way because that is just really anything to hurt your partner. I think Juliet did a cute because even though they knew if they really good job of being sincere and loyal to could of gotten caught and they would of Romeo. When Juliet’s father wanted her to been in trouble, they still did it anyways. marry Paris Juliet refused because she loved That is just cute. So I think that they kind Romeo( A.3 S.3). Juliet’s father was one of of had the loving thing down but kind of those types of people, that if it wasn’t his way not because if they were really loving, then or no one's way. So when Juliet stood up to they would of been more careful. Romeo and her father he was not very happy. This is what Juliet stuck out to see each other and if happened, lord Capulet came in one day and someone would have found Romeo then he said, “Thursday next, to go with Paris to Saint would have gotten killed for what he did. And I Peter’s Church, Or I will drag thee on a hurdle don't know why Juliet wasn’t the slightest bit of thither. Out, you green-sickness carrion! Out, angry when she found out that Romeo killed you baggage! You tallow face!” Juliet was not Tybalt. If the person who loved me killed one of gonna let her father win. So she said, “Good my family members I would be furious and father, I beseech you on my knee,{She kneels would ever forgive him. So Juliet was pretty down} Hear me with patience but dumb that she didn’t let him go, because who to speak my word.” So I think knows Romeo could've killed someone else. Juliet has the loyal thing down There are always times when you should walk but Romeo has shown me no away and I think Juliet should've walked away. signs that he was loyal, and it takes to be in a What is love? To be truly in love you have to be compassionate, relationship. If you both sincere/loyal and loving. I do not think that Romeo and Juliet were truly in love. Basically I think that they are just dumb teenagers who thought they were in love, but really they didn’t even know what love was. They were close but they failed my love test. VIEW FROM THE FRONT OFFICE RUIN Say the word out loud to yourself. Go ahead – it won’t hurt. This is not the typical way to start an article, but “stick” with me. There is a method to my madness. We’ll come back to this word later Have you ever wondered why certain ideas and concepts tend to stick? Why do some tend to thrive while others die? How do we improve the chances of worthy ideas? This idea of stickiness is explored in the book, Made to Stick, by Chip Heath and Dan Heath. The authors describe six key principals as to why some ideas win and also explain how we can apply these rules to make our own messages stick. As teachers and parents, this is exactly what we try to do everyday. The first concept pertaining to stickiness is simplicity - the more simple and profound, the better. This goes along with the KISS method – not the band KISS – but rather Keep It Simple Stupid. If a concept can be condensed to one little phrase, we have a better chance of remembering it. The USA Today newspaper was based on this premise – keep the articles short, sweet, and to the point and provide charts, graphs and easy to read statistics. Another concept of stickiness is unexpectedness. What better way to generate curiosity and interest than making it something totally unexpected and a surprise. This will help generate the interest and also help hold ones attention. This can also be described as the shock value. The Velcro theory of learning helps describe another concept, concreteness. The more hooks in the idea, the better. This will help people understand the concept, but also help make it tangible and real. It brings the idea home and also makes it something we can sink our teeth into. As we watch commercials, do we tend to believe the people we are famliar with or some unknown actor? In most cases, we are going to trust the person we know – this lends to their credibility. We want to believe that person is the authority and will trust what they say or do. This also harkens to those late night infomercials. Usually, the pitchman has the credibility for us to believe the product will work. Appealing to someone’s emotional side is another step to stickiness. Making people care utilizes the power of association. Think about the commercials such as Save a Child and animal shelters – they all play on our emotions and push us to step up to the cause. By appealing to our emotions, it creates self-interest and also appeals to our identity. It helps drive the point home by appealing to our human side. The last, but definitely not least, is using stories. We communicate with each other by telling stories to get our point across. Stories simulate the situation and help us gauge how we should act in a certain situation. We are, in essence, role-playing. We go through the motions, acting it out, in hopes that if a person is ever in a certain situation, they will know what to do because they have done it before (practiced). Another way to think about the use of stories is how parables are used. We all remember certain stories – The Good Samaritan and Daniel and the Lion’s Den for example. We remember these stories and the moral behind them. If we were just told to be nice to strangers, would that get the message across as well as telling the story of the Good Samaritan? Stories help us see the action, personalize the situation, and draw our own conclusions. Making our ideas stick follows a process. The ones that stick tend to follow the six concepts of stickiness – simple, unexpected, concrete, credible, emotional and stories. Using these six concepts just might help the next time we want our ideas, thoughts, or actions to have a lasting effect. Let’s go back to the word that started the article. With two well placed spaces (denoted by the underscores), we can TOTALLY change the meaning of the word. Now read the word aloud. R_U_IN Those two little spaces make a huge difference! So, the question of the month is this – ARE YOU IN? R_U_IN to make Exeter-Milligan better? R_U_IN to make Exeter-Milligan the place to be?
