THE PAKEMAN
PRESS
Thank you once again for taking the time to read this
weekly newsletter. I hope that you will find its contents
useful.
Dear Parents/Carers
Arsenal Football Competition
On Monday morning Pakeman took
part in the annual Arsenal football
competition at Market Road. Well
done to our Year 5/6 team of boys
and girls who played really well and
reached the semi-finals. As you can
see they were very happy to meet
Arsenal’s
genuine
dino-mascot,
Gunnersaurus!
School Council
This week our school council (made up of
2 children from each class from KS1 and
KS2) had a meeting which was chaired
by Finola, Tay, and Deborah from
Kidscape. The focus of the meeting was
bullying and the children learned about
strategies to deal with bullying and they
will be feeding back the techniques they
have learned to the other children in their
classes with support from their class
teachers and Tay.
Parents’ Evening
It was fantastic to see so many parents/
carers at parents’ evening yesterday and
also attending the Nursery and Reception
consultation days. The children have
been working really hard and in an
exceptionally positive manner, and when
their parents/carers get involved in their
learning they do even better. Parents’
evenings give you the opportunity to ask
questions and share information with
your
children’s
teachers.
Please
remember that if you ever have any
concerns about your child you can make
an appointment to see their teacher
either by speaking to them before/after
school or a member of the office staff.
Naming Competition
Having classroom animals has
significant benefits. For example,
observing and caring for them
gives children a sense of
responsibility and respect for life,
as well as helping them develop
sensitivity and an awareness of
the feelings and needs of others,
both animals and humans, as they
can see directly how their actions
and behaviour affect the animals.
The children are really excited that
we now have two guinea pigs
(absolutely no relation to pigs!)
which have spent time in Orange
Class and are now in the Nursery.
A big thank you to Tessa,
Sureyya’s mum, who helped us
get these animals. Vicky and Julie,
who are looking after the guinea
pigs would like the children to
suggest complementary names for
them (eg. Bill and Ben). If you
have any good ideas please write
the two names on a piece of paper
and give it to Layla in the office by
Friday 6th March.

Discuss this question at
home, sharing your thoughts
and ideas:
World Book Day
Thursday 5th March is World Book
Day and all children should come to
school dressed up as their favourite
book character on this day. If you
would like some ideas about making
costumes, please see Layla in the
office. On the website you will find
ideas for parents to help support their
children’s reading.
New Parent Governor Needed
We need a new parent governor. If
you are interested in this role, please
give your name to one of the office
staff and they will pass your details on
to Nicky, our Chair of Governors.
Would you still be you
even if everyone in the
world thought you were
someone else?

Guitar Club
Six children in Years 4-6 have been learning Guitar with Tom since December and
they are all making excellent progress learning different chords and putting them
together to play some basic pieces of music. The children are all enthusiastic and
making really positive contributions to the club. Well done to all of them! Hosna in
Orange class said, ‘I really enjoy Guitar Club because we learn a lot and I like the
music we play. It’s a lot of fun’.
Cake Sale for Solar Aid Charity
600 million people in Africa have no access to electricity, which means they don’t have proper lighting. Many
of these people use homemade kerosene lamps, which are not only a poor source of light, they give off toxic
(poisonous) smoke which pollutes the air inside people’s houses.
Solar lights offer a fantastic means of overcoming
this problem. They sit outside in the daytime,
absorbing energy from the sun and at night they
are taken inside and give off light. People save
money on kerosene, candles and batteries.
Children can study and read at home in the
evenings and there are health benefits because
there is less pollution in people’s homes. Already,
around 1.5 million lights have been sold in Kenya,
Malawi, Zambia, Senegal and Uganda.
On Thursday, we had a cake sale in aid of this
amazing charity and raised the fantastic sum of
£120. Since each light costs £3, this means we
can buy 40 lights!! A huge thank you to Nicky who baked over 200 cakes and then sold them with the help of
Horia, Mohamed, Mariam, Luke, Chinniel and Zeynel who all did a fantastic job.
We need your help!
We are starting an art project to make the school more
colourful, especially the playground. We need knitters and
crocheters to make and donate colourful pieces of knitting
(square or rectangular) approximately 10-20cm wide and at
least 30cm long. These will then be used to wrap around the
tree trunks and branches in the playground, so the brighter they
are the better. If you can’t knit or crochet we’d appreciate any
wool you can donate. This can be either balls of wool or
unwanted knitted scarves. Please hand any knitted/crocheted
contributions or donations of wool to Layla in the office.
The other idea we are putting into practice involves all the children designing and painting a flower of their
choice in school. These will then be put together to produce a beautiful brightly coloured wall mural for the
playground.
