Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine 12(5): 647659, 2010 This article reports on the important clinical problem of spinal infection and its surgical treatment demonstrating that stabilizing the spine with hardware is safe and has a low reinfection rate as long as through debridement is done. I was the acting senior author over viewing the project, formulating the objective, plan and discussion, providing most of the reviewed surgical patients and reviewing /editing the manuscript. The first author is a trainee. 2. Rhiew R, Manjila S, Dezure A, Tabbosha M, Guthikonda M, Eltahawy H: Minimally invasive anterior vertebroplasty for C-2 metastatic lesions. Neurosurgical Focus 25(2):E4, 2008 This article demonstrates a modification of surgical technique to allow of stabilization of a compromised C2 vertebra using a minimal access anterior cervical approach to inject methylmethacrylate. The importance of this article is that it demonstrates a much safer technique to inject cement to the C2 compared to the regular transoral approach and also avoids major occipital cervical fusion in cases with pathological C2 fracture in which the bone purchase does not allow for odontoid screws. I was the senior author describing the surgical technique, providing the clinical material and editing/reviewing the manuscript. The first author is a resident. 3. Neurosurgery 62 Suppl 2:ONS360-6; discussion ONS366-8, 2008 This article was selected for republication from 2005. It compares a new Red nucleus based method for targeting the sub thalamic nucleus to previously described methods of direct and indirect targeting for deep brain electrodes insertion at the sub thalamic nucleus for Parkinson's disease. As a coauthor, I participated in the research plan, analyzing the data using the Stealth neuronavigation system to obtain the post-operative target coordinates and writing the materials section. Most of the authors were bioengineers. My role as a neurosurgeon was to participate in formulating the research plan, assign weights to various brain areas based on their degree of eloquence. I also reviewed the manuscript for anatomical and surgical accuracy. 5. Neurosurgery 56 (2 Suppl):360-8; discussion 360-368, 2005 This is the first time this article was published in 2005. It was republished in 2008. It describes 3 techniques of sub thalamic nucleus targeting comparing a new method utilizing the red nucleus as an internal fiducial to the known direct and indirect targeting methods for STN DBS. My role was analyzing the data using the stealth neuronavigation to re draw the trajectories and measure the distances between the active DBS contacts and the red nucleus, sub thalamic nucleus and mid commissural points.
