Your professionally licensed guide will provide interesting and informative narration during your ride about the historic Virginia peninsula and the Hampton Roads area and discuss the significance and history of Colonial Williamsburg and its restoration, as well as the historic triangle, including Jamestown and Yorktown. Upon arrival in Williamsburg, you will step back into the 18th century while strolling through the streets of Colonial Williamsburg. Your historical interpreter will guide you through the past and the events that helped shape America’s history. Enjoy free time to shop and browse in the many unique specialty shops in Merchants Square. Lunch will be on your own in Merchants Square or one of the Colonial Taverns. Your guide will point out all of the dining options at the conclusion of your walking tour. JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT Following lunch enjoy a tour of Jamestown Settlement - established in 1607, this was the first permanent settlement in the New World. Guests will enjoy a guided tour of the re -created village which chronicles the nation’s 17th century beginnings in Virginia. Through an introductory film, "1607: A Nation Takes Root", and expansive 30,000 square foot indoor exhibition galleries, you will discover the political, social and economic factors that led to the colonization of the New World, the culture of the Powhatan Indians of coastal Virginia at the time of the English arrival, and the first century of the Virginia colony when Jamestown served as its capital. Outside, history comes alive in re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village, a colonial fort, and the three ships that transported English colonists to Virginia in 1607. Costumed historical interpreters demonstrate work and everyday life of the era and engage visitors in a variety of activities. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 3, 2011: 9:00am – 3:00pm HAMPTON ROADS BY LAND AND SEA VIRGINIA BEACH RIDING TOUR Board the coach with your guide to enjoy beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay as you ride through Virginia Beach. See the historic lighthouses and the First Landing Cross at Cape Henry where the English colonists first came ashore in 1607 before they sailed up the James River to found the first permanent English Settlement at Jamestown. OLD CAPE HENRY LIGHTHOUSE Visit the old Cape Henry Lighthouse. The lighthouse stands near the spot where in 1607 Captain Christopher Newport raised a cross to offer thanks for the safe crossing of the Atlantic by the first settlers. The first constructed using Federal funds in 1792, the lighthouse started to crack in 1870 and was replaced with the new Cape Henry Lighthouse only 357 feet away, which today is operated by the U.S. Coast Guard and the official symbol for the City of Virginia Beach. Guests may choose to climb to the top of the lighthouse (small fee, pay on own) for outstanding views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesa- peake Bay and then shop in the gift shop for unique nautical items. VICTORY ROVER HARBOR CRUISE Next, board the Victory Rover for a two hour cruise through the bustling Hampton Roads Harbor, one of the largest in the world. Enjoy fascinating and entertaining commentary along the way aboard this naval themed vessel. You will thrill to the sight of aircraft carriers, nuclear sub- marines, guided cruisers and all of the other ships that form the world's most powerful armada. A box lunch will be included on board. NORFOLK RIDING TOUR Learn about Norfolk’s colorful 325 year history as you ride through the lovely historic district and restored areas. View the stately homes along the Hague, old St. Paul’s Church, the Moses Myers House, MacArthur Memorial, the historic Freemason District, Nauticus: The National Maritime Center, the Battleship Wisconsin, the restored waterfront area, and many other points of interest. Downtown Norfolk has undergone a complete transformation in the last decade and features the beautifully renovated Town Point Park with the Armed Forces memorial, brand new $34milliion cruise terminal, waterfront condos and state of the art shopping area. It is suggested that you do not wait until the day of the tour to pick up your tickets. Tickets must be presented to a Phillips guide upon boarding the coach. All itineraries are subject to change.
