Instructor: Ric Molinar Course: Spanish II Honors First Semester 2016 TEXT: Realidades: Pearson Prentice Hall / 2008 COURSE DESCRIPTION The four basic language skills introduced in Level I will be further developed in Level II. Vocabulary is stressed while reading serves to reinforce the oral skill. Communication in the language remains the main goal; hence, classes are conducted in Spanish within practical limits. Conversational and reading materials are based upon Spanish and American life, thereby giving the student some insight into these cultures. COURSE OBJECTIVES Students will engage in conversation, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions. Students will understand and interpret written and spoken Spanish on a variety of topics. Students will reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through foreign language. Students will demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied and their own. Students will use the language both within and beyond the school setting. Spanish/Hispanic Culture ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS How do you conjugate AR/ER/IR verbs in the present and preterite tense? What are stem-changing verbs? What is number and gender agreement in Spanish and how do you write it? What are Spanish direct object pronouns and how do you use them? What are verbs in the Preterit forms? How do you use verbs in the Preterit form? 1 COURSE REQUIREMENTS Spanish II Honors Bring to class each day: blue or black ink pen, pencil, notebook paper, 3 hole binder, Spanish textbook (if class set is not provided). Grading Scale: 10% - Participation, Lab (library/home computer), Homework, and class work. 35% - Quizzes, Cultural projects, and La Meta-hablar Español. 55% - Test, Major Projects MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS OR PROJECTS Course Notebook Each student is expected to maintain a course notebook. A rubric of the notebook expectations will be given to each student at the beginning of the year. The notebooks will be checked at least one time during the semester (unannounced). It will be graded as a quiz grade. La meta – hablar Español – participation grade. 100 →→→→ Exceptional Spanish Spoken → continued effort to speak the Target Language through the period. No English spoken! 94 →→→→ Some Spanish spoken → Not once or twice → Enough effort to warrant a 94 grade No English spoken! 75- →→→→ On task with Lesson → Did everything in lesson including partner activities No Spanish or English spoken outside of required lesson 50 →→→→ English Spoken → any one word or more 1. La meta – hablar Español starts upon ringing of the tardy bell and ends at the bell to end class. Bell to bell. 2. English can only be spoken with permission in reference to grammar or assignment related questions. 3. Questions must be started in Spanish and if the student can no longer continue, permission must be asked if they may continue in English. 4. Exceptional Spanish is defined in effort not mistake free. Mistakes can be made, attempt is what is measured. 5. Spanish spoken to anyone counts in your evaluation. 6. If you are speaking to one of your classmates and the teacher does not understand you, it is assumed you are speaking English. 7. La meta – hablar Español will be given as a daily grade to be averaged at the end of the week. The averaged weekly grade will count as a quiz grade. To allow you time to acclimate to La meta – hablar Español the grade will have no weight calculated into the grade average for the first 4 weeks of school. It will continue to have quiz weight throughout the year. 8. Rules may change as we continue to improve the La meta – hablar Español 2 MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS OR PROJECTS (continued) Spanish Television & Spanish Radio Students are encouraged to watch 30 minutes or more (weekly) of Spanish television to develop their listening skills in the target language as they view pictures and actions on the screen. In addition students are encouraged to listen 15 minutes or more (weekly) to Spanish radio to practice their listening skills in the target language. Radio listening can easily be done in the car on the way to school. Cultural Projects – These are possible projects to be assigned some others might be added as the semester progresses. Projects will count as a quiz grade.
