Structure of the Sun BOOK
Stars, even though far away, are literally all around us, and we depend on one, our Sun, in particular! Therefore,
it’s useful to know a little more about that giant ball of gas and dust that helps sustain our planet. For today’s
activity, you will be creating a book that takes us on tour of the parts of our star, the Sun.
Directions:
1. Color and organize the circles as follows:
a. Cover: Color and decorate as desired!
b. Corona: Light or bright yellow or orange
*For the rest of the layers – color the innermost layer
the directed color, also coloring the thinner outside
layers on the outside according to the layers that
came before*
c. Chromosphere: Red
d. Photosphere: Green
e. Subsurface Flows: Blue
f. Convective Zone: Yellow
g. Radiative Zone: Orange
h. Inner Core: Purple, indigo, or blue green
2. Cut out the definitions in the data table and paste
on the matching circle layer
3. Cut the circles out AROUND THE OUTER EDGE!
4. Staple the circle together in the order above.
5. Use the book to study layers and definitions!

definition
B
corona: the gaseous “crown” around
the sun and other stars that is
usually seen during an eclipse
C
chromosphere: reddish gas layer
above the photosphere of the sun
that, along with the corona, creates
the outer “atmosphere” of the sun
D
photosphere: the bright “envelope”
of a star from which its light and heat
radiate.
E
subsurface flows: an area of
twisting gases and other elements
that may churn up magnetic fields.
F
convective zone: where hot plasma
rises, cools as it gets close to the
surface layers, and then falls to be
heated again by the radiative zone
and core
G
radiative zone: the section between
the core and convective zone where
energy created by nuclear fusion in
the core moves outward
H
inner core: dense, hot innermost
area that radiates energy through the
process of nuclear fusion of
hydrogen and helium
