GREEN TIPS…
Change to fluorescent bulbs: If
every house in the United States
changed all of the light bulbs in
their house to fluorescent, that
would be equivalent to taking one
million cars off the streets.
Shade Tree: Plant a shade tree
this spring on the sunny side of
your house to eventually reduce
your air conditioning bill
by 10-15%. One tree can
absorb a ton of CO2 over
its lifetime!
Nature’s Theme
To borrow a 3 letter tex- to stop annual weed grasses
ting term from my teenage before they start, such as crabdaughter….OMG!!! What a grass. Did you know that crabwinter season we’ve just been
through...hopefully, it’s over
for now! It will be good to get
out of “winter warrior” mode
for a while.
Spring is nearing with just a
few more days
to go. It’s like
a time of renewal
and
rebirth. Nothing is more
pleasant than
to see the daffodils and tulips
pushing their way through the
earth to shine for us again after
a long winter’s nap.
Spring is an important time
in the landscape. It’s time to
prepare your turf and grounds
for the upcoming seasons. It is
also the most important time
grass seeds can remain in your
soil for up to 30 years before
sprouting?
Once a spring clean up has
been completed and the turf
areas raked, your lawn is ready
to receive its first dose of nutrients. With our program, a preemergent weed control for
crabgrass is included. Timing is
everything here folks. Crabgrass begins to sprout its’ ugly
head around the 4th of July. By
applying the necessary products NOW (between March 20April 20th) these weed seeds
will be prevented from germinating.
The goal is to maintain a
dense, healthy lawn — this is
what prevents weeds from
growing.
Part of our service
involves regular site checks to
our clients who receive
maintenance. During these
visits, we outline potential
safety hazards, check the turf
and plants for insects and
disease,
and
provide
recommendations
for
improvements.
We look
forward to seeing you out
there!
Onward to Spring!
Community: Garrick-Santo Landscape Co. “We Care!”
“We Care” is a simple way to sum up our company culture. We care about our clients, employees, the
community and the environment.
Garrick-Santo has been donating time and materials on Earth Day, April 22nd, for the past several years
in concert with PLANET, our national trade organization, for beautification of a public area in one of our local
service communities. We are currently working toward obtaining a site or two for the 2011 event. If you
know of a high school student who needs volunteer service credits this would be a great event to
participate in. Last year we held two events in Wilmington & Reading. Please call Anita
Gottschalk directly if you are interested in joining us at 781-322-0006.

If we had no winter, the spring would
not be so pleasant: if we did not
sometimes taste of adversity,
prosperity would not be so welcome.

One little blurb about lawn seeding in the spring
& summer months…
Spring Clean Up: Dethatching, raking, bed
cultivation, and trimming of winter damaged
shrubs. Removal of leaves and other winter debris.
Opens up the lawn, clears out the beds and sets the
stage for the season. We even blow down drives
and walks!
Edging: Define existing planting beds with a
deep neat edge.
Mulch: Install or refresh mulch to planting beds
to highlight plants, decrease weeds and provide
that finishing touch!
Crabgrass Control: With fertilizer to jump
start and feed your lawn, prevents crabgrass later
in the season, and improves color.
Plant Care: Spring deep root feeding, dormant
oil sprays or structural pruning will get plants off to
a healthy start.
Call us to add a service asap!
If you are planning to install or renovate your lawn
this spring with seed, please be patient...it may
seem like an impossible battle to conquer but in the
long run seed lawns are much stronger and require
less chemicals and care to maintain than sod. This is
largely due to the fact that sod is 98% Kentucky
bluegrass and a seed lawn incorporates a blend of
seed to fit your property’s own environment. It does
take up to two full years to achieve to a thick lawn.
Although the best time to plant a seed lawn is
between August 20th and September 30th it’s a
pretty short window of time and most folks don't
like waiting. It’s possible to do it in the spring &
early summer it just takes more care and patience.
Last year we renovated a traffic island in Wilmington
for our Earth Day Project, during a water ban, and
although it was green with crabgrass most of the
summer by the end of September it was green with
finer turfgrass growing and on its way to thickening!
