FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT February 5, 2017~ Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 Partner Parish of St. John the Baptist and St. Joseph T W G MISSION STATEMENT he Living Faith Community of Saint John the Baptist, Scottdale, PA and Saint Joseph, Everson, PA are bridged by our common Baptism, while maintaining our respective ethnic heritages. We are called by Jesus Christ to be a nurturing community through worship and service. e are committed to preserve our Catholic beliefs centered on the Eucharist as we become better disciples while continuing to develop strong lay leadership. uided by the Holy Spirit, we share a vision for the future. We will become a vibrant Partner Parish where all feel loved and welcomed. Today’s Readings First Reading : The expectations of the covenant were twofold: First the people were called to fidelity to God and second they were to care for their fellow members of the covenant community. Isaiah addresses some of those obligations. They deal with the most basic and obvious of human needs: having food, shelter, and clothing. Those who are in need are to be treated as your own, meaning they are family; together they share a common bond. When the faithful live in this way they are blessed by the Lord; they will be like a light that shines before others and the Lord will answer their every prayer. Responsorial Psalm 112: The psalmist sings the praises of the just person. Echoing the image of light in the First Reading, the psalmist says that the just person is like a light in the darkness and his justice toward others will rebound on his own life. He will never need to fear adversity from others because the Lord remembers his good works. The just person lives from his heart, and in the end he will be exalted in glory. Second Reading: In many of Paul’s letters to the early Christians he makes a point of being self-effacing in order to impress upon his readers that it is the power of the Spirit and the importance of the Word of God. This is the gist of today’s text. Paul distances himself from the high wisdom teachings of other orators. He humbly admits to his own weakness and anxiousness in their presence, but he boldly affirms that the message of Christ Jesus is what is really important. Gospel: The familiar images and ordinary use of salt and light become metaphors of a spiritual identity for Jesus’ disciples. Both salt and light cause other things to happen. Salt adds flavor to food; light gets rid of darkness so others can see and move about safely. The task of the disciple is to be an agent of the Kingdom of God so that the lives of others will be enriched. Jesus’ statement is emphatic: “you are,” not you might be or someday you will be. This identity and accompanying mission has a present purpose; to declare the Kingdom of God now. WORDS FROM OUR PASTOR…. The end of the year financial statements... Here at the office, we are getting ready to mail 2016 financial ncial statements to all of our parishioners from the two churches. You should receive them shortly, if not already. I would like to remind you, that as you look at your contribution statement for the past year and find a discrepancy, please do not call the Parish Office directly to speak with Jeanne Anderson, our Business Manager or Anita Fabian, our Secretary. Instead, please contact the respective church’s Finance Council heads( for St. John the Baptist it is June Morocco and from St. Joseph it is Diane Figg) and they will bring these discrepancies to our attention here at the office for the resolution. Thank you for your cooperation. All and all, these contributions should be posted correctly to your individual accounts, but at times mistakes do happen, so kindly inform the above individuals and through them we will be able to reconcile any mistakes. On the personal note I wish to thank all of you for your love of the respective Churches and your financial support. In the past year with your financial help, we were able to accomplish much around and in both Churches. It is all of our baptismal responsibility to support our Churches and our faith. Thank You for that support in 2016! Also, preparations are under way, for 2017 Diocesan Lenten Appeal Campaign entitled: “ Because I am Catholic, I pray, I serve, I give.” Shortly, the DLA team will be contacting the advanced givers to start this year’s DLA sooner. There will be a letter forthcoming from Bishop Malesic to these individuals that will spell out 2017 needs for our Diocese and the needs of both our Churches. Thanks to our 2016 DLA and donations, St. John the Baptist Church Renovations & St. Joseph’s phase 1,2, and 3 wall projects February 12, 2017 have been completed and paid in full Your generosity is greatly appreciated. 4:00 PM House Financial Corner Dec. 2016 St. John the Baptist Dec. 2016 St. Joseph Sebek Dec.
