THE PITTSBURGH KNIGHT A PUBLICATION OF THE PITTSBURGH CHAPTER OF THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Editors: Don Turowski ([email protected]) & Robert Conroy ([email protected]) Volume 38, Issue 12 A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAPLAIN… My friends in the Knights of Columbus, As we get to the last month of this year, I want to share with you something that you can reflect on as 2014 comes to an end. Boarding the Train of Life At birth we boarded the train and met our parents, and we believe they will always travel on our side. However, at some station our parents will step down from the train, leaving us on this journey alone. As time goes by, other people will board the train; and they will be significant i.e. our siblings, friends, children, and even the love of your life. Many will step down and leave a permanent vacuum. Others will go so unnoticed that we don't realize they vacated their seats. This train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, goodbye, and farewells. Success consists of having a good relationship with all passengers requiring that we give the best of ourselves. The mystery to everyone is: We do not know at which station we ourselves will step down. <continued on page 2> December 2014 www.pittsburghchapterkofc.org CHAPTER NEWS REMINDERS… ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ AND The Bishop’s Project Awards Dinner is set for April 13, 2015 – The Three Rivers Mass will be held on Sunday, April 19th at St. Mary of Mercy—9:30 am Mass. It was an honor to have the Rector of the Byzantine Seminary Father Robert Pitpa to offer some remarks and talk about the current project to upgrade the Seminary Library. If you personally or your council would like to donate to the project there is more information included in this newsletter. The Byzantine Seminary is where I studied to become a Permanent Deacon. The Annual Chapter Memorial Mass and Dinner will held at Council #1400 Bellevue on Friday December 12, 2014. Mass is at 6:30 P.M. and dinner to follow. <continued in next column> Additional information is located elsewhere in this newsletter and on the Chapter Website. Dinner reservations cost $12.00 per person if made by December 5th, with reservations received after that date will cost $15.00. Our Chaplain Father McCool will be the Celebrant. Look forward to seeing you there. As usual, we are still looking for councils to host the chapter meetings – January, February and June 2015 (along with August 2015) are booked. If your council is interested please contact Second Vice-President Joe Ferruzza. A reminder that with the newly approved Chapter Budget there is an added incentive to hosting the Chapter meeting. Any council that hosts the Chapter meeting and requests it, the Chapter in the Council’s name will make a $50 dollar donation to the Bishop’s Project. There has been some discussion about moving the day of the Month that the Chapter meets. Currently the Chapter meets on the First Tuesday of the Month. Some feel that the Chapter meeting should return to the Fourth Friday of the Month. After the first of the year another survey will go online to assist the Chapter officers with the future direction of the Chapter. Your input is valuable. Happy Thanksgiving and hope to see many of you at the Memorial Mass on December 12th at Bellevue. The initial reaction for many people when you mention life insurance as a gift is a quick step back and a questioning stare. “How morbid,” they think. While it may seem that way when you first mention it, life insurance is really a thoughtful gift that can be a financial life preserver in tough times. The problem with life insurance is the general perception. Many think of death instead of the great benefits it provides, and the security that it offers – even while you’re alive. Life insurance should be thought of as a precautionary protective measure for a family unit. The purchase of this product can mean saving your home, sending your children to college, and preserving your spouse’s quality of life in the event of your death. One of the times you may want to purchase life insurance for someone is when a family has a new baby. It’s a great, low-cost way to set money aside for the future (i.e. college tuition, housing, business start-up, etc.). Of greater importance, it ensures these children will have insurance as adults, in case an illness later in life makes him or her uninsurable. Newlyweds are also ideal recipients for life insurance. As they join their lives and financial responsibilities, young couples need to make sure that their early investments are fully protected. If something were to happen to one of them, the other may be faced with serious financial hardship. A life insurance policy is an ideal way to ensure their future and protect their assets. As nontraditional as it may be, life insurance is a wise and caring gift to purchase for many people.
