Dear Parents and Community Supporters:
Welcome to "Read On Jackson", Summer Reading 2017! We invite you and your children, your
neighborhood, and your workplace, to join this citywide reading movement! Help Summer
Reading 2017, meet the following goals:
• Engage 30,000 readers in reading 100,000 books
• Continue a community wide culture of reading
• Increase academic growth for school year 2017-2018
"Read On Jackson" is a unique collaboration between the Jackson Public School District and
multiple community partners. Beginning next school year, JPS will accept the reading records
used by the Jackson Hinds Library System Summer Reading Program. All reading records
submitted to JPS must follow the JPS summer reading guidelines. Information about reading
records and guidelines can be found on the JPS summer reading webpage and at your local
library.
JPS knows that students that read throughout the summer continue to grow academically and
students that do not read play catch up at the beginning of a new school year. So we are
encouraging you to support your family by:
•
•
•
•
•
Enrolling in the public library's summer reading program for all ages
Making regular trips to the library together
Talking about reading with your family
Attending summer events that support reading
Visiting local or faraway places that expand your child's horizons such as the
reservoir, the zoo, museums, the state capitol building, the governor's mansion, civil
rights historic locations, etc.
• Supporting your student(s) in completing the Reading Record in this booklet
• Becoming an "Adult Reader" and recording your own reading.
I look forward to Building Stronger Schools through Reading together this summer!

Greetings,
On behalf of the City of Jackson, I would like to wish you all an enjoyable summer. We are extremely
proud of your hard work and I look forward to seeing you again in the fall. Take time to continue
reading over the summer, be sure to complete all of your required reading logs, and do not forget to
turn them in when you return to school in the fall.

belief is simply that your future is much bigger than our past. I need you to make a difference. I need
you to strive for excellence. I need you to be the best you can be, because we expect the best from you.
Simply put, I need you to make it! The City of Jackson is committed to you . I look forward to seeing you

know how to help you find books you like, fill out your logs, and keep your records. They often give out prizes to
students who read and have a party in July for everyone who completes their program.

Building Stronger Readers Together
Students, talk to your parents, your neighbors, your relatives, your church leaders, your doctor, your dentist, and other adults you
trust about what they are reading. Ask them if they wll help Jackson meet its goals! We need 30,000 readers who have all read one
of the required books and at least two more of their choice. If adults read books and list them for you, it will help your school meet
its goals! If you run out of room, you can use additional paper and add it to this booklet.
