Power & Privilege Symposium at University of Alaska Southeast Save the Date! November 9th The UAS Power and Privilege Symposium is a one day conference-style teach-in designed to give members of the UAS & Southeast Alaska community an opportunity to come together and engage in difficult, thoughtful, and honest conversation about the ways social hierarchies and identities manifest themselves in our communities. Discussions include those about race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, age, religion, body size, ability, mental illness, class, and their intersectionalities. Students, Staff, Faculty, and community members are invited to present research, lead panel discussions, host a workshop, share their personal experiences, and engage in this dialogue on the UAS Juneau Campus. The Power and Privilege Symposium is expected to draw between 400-500 individuals to campus and is scheduled for an entire day (see tentative schedule, below). Regularly scheduled classes (not including short courses) will be cancelled on this day. Incorporate the Symposium into your classes! Faculty members are highly encouraged to incorporate attendance and involvement in the power and privilege symposium into their coursework, regardless of discipline. Suggested assignments include (but are not limited to) writing reflection papers, presenting upon knowledge learned, comparing the concepts of power and privilege with a specific academic area, submitting a presentation proposal, and leading follow-up discussions during class time.
