Mothers & Daughters in Touch:
For girls 9-11 years old and their mothers.
A special opportunity for mothers and daughters to spend time
together, learn and have fun!
This 7 week series about relationship and skill building works towards expanding the mother’s capacity as both mentor and resource person for her daughter. The program seeks to:
• Strengthen the girls’ self-esteem
• Promote a healthy body image
• Inform on what to expect through puberty
• Provide life skills for handling peer pressure
• Promote problem solving and healthy decision making
Mothers and Daughters in Touch is about preserving and
strengthening the relationship that is already well established – it
is not meant to be therapy or counseling.
Synervoice calls
Our recent snow days have once again acquainted us with Synervoice – Sunrise School
Division’s automated calling system. The
school received feedback from several families
about the calls. This feedback fell into two categories; 1. Why did the call come so early? 2.
Why did I get called three or four times?
We are not sure why some calls came before 6:00 am, but this
feedback will be given to Sunrise SD for consideration. It may
have something to do with the fact that the system needs to call
the families of almost 5000 students and almost another 1000 staff
members as early as reasonably possible so alternate plans can be
made.
In regards to some households receiving several calls, there is
a solution. Please allow the message to play the entire way
through, as at the end of the message you will be prompted to hit a
number on your phone to confirm that you have received the message. If you hang up before this, the system will assume that the
call was disconnected and you did not receive the information.
This will generate another phone call.
If you have questions about the automated calling system, please
feel free to contact the school.

Grumpy Cat
by Ryan
Grumpy Cat did not like Christmas. The problem was
that his owners did not know that he disliked it. All the
lights and the big
tree
scared
Grumpy
Cat.
When
Christmas
morning
came,
Grumpy
Cat
jumped
on
the
Christmas tree and broke some bulbs.
Then he wore a Christmas hat because
he was so happy he broke some bulbs.
His owner got very mad. This made
Grumpy Cat feel sad. So he decided to
MEOW very loudly. When he made so
much noise, his owner gave him his Christmas stocking. Inside he found a
fish cracker. Yummm! After that, Grumpy Cat decided Christmas wasn’t so
bad after all!
The Kindness of Giving
by Landon Reid
This Christmas a group of volunteers made a Christmas
Hamper program. When you donate, it all goes to the
families in need. A business even let the volunteers use
one of its buildings. People donated over a thousand
things. The person who
started this program is
named Jonathan.
Jonathan started this
because he thinks it’s important that everyone has a good
Christmas. Jonathan is 23 years old. He enjoys playing hockey
and listening to music. When he started this program, he had no
idea how well it was going to go.
He didn’t enjoy volunteering that much at first, but when more
people volunteered, he still had time to play hockey and listen to music.
Jonathan thought it was such a success; he wants to do it again next year!
We can all learn from Jonathan that we always have time to give to
others and still have time for ourselves.

Christmas Lights
by Alexa Richardson
Today is Christmas Eve! I kept wishing - Pick me, pick me! Maybe this year I would finally be the one to put up the town’s Christmas lights. It sounds pretty silly, but it’s actually fun
and difficult to do. The Mayor pulled the winning ticket from the box … everyone was crossing their fingers. The mayor yelled, “Number 19!” My number is nineteen! I got it! I am so
excited I could scream. Now I can’t wait until tomorrow to start decorating
the town!
Bright and early, I started putting up colourful lights building to building.
It was so much fun. I put up green
lights, red lights, white lights, blue
lights and yellow lights! The whole
town was filled with lights. The park, the shops, the
library, everything twinkles. I even did the pet store!
For the pet store, I put up special animal lights. I
used over 200 strands of lights. I took home 42
strands of lights to do my house. My mom was so
happy she said, “They are so pretty!” I was finally
done and now I was really, really exhausted! It was
time for bed, so I brushed my teeth, got my pyjamas on and fell asleep.
The next morning was Christmas. I was still exhausted and sore from putting up so many lights the day before, but excited to open my presents! The
very last present I opened that morning was from my mom. I opened the box
and saw that mom got me Christmas lights!!! I thought to myself, are you kidding me - more lights? I am never wishing “PICK ME, PICK ME” again!
Merry Christmas
by Jordynn Seymour
Merry Christmas to all! Mother says, “Santa loves you.” We
love him too.
Mother says, “The elves help him sew.
Santa brings children presents.”
Some of my friends ask if Santa even
exists. Mother believes Santa is true.
So I believe he is true and my brothers
and sisters believe too.
My mother also said the elves help Santa because he is a little bit
old.
When my father helps us put out the cookies he said, “Santa enjoys eating these! That’s
why he has a nice, round belly from eating cookies everywhere he goes.”

Waiting for Christmas
by Morgan Cowan
There are 20 days until Christmas. I am excited for Christmas
to arrive. I have an Advent Calendar.
One week later, there are still 14
days to Christmas. I am still
waiting for Christmas to come. I feel nervous from so much
waiting! Finally, we decorated the Christmas tree.
Ten days later, I was so happy because now there are
only four more days to Christmas. I had really nothing to do
so I watched T.V. Later, I went to wrap the presents and
put them under the tree. Christmas Day is finally here. Now I had to wait for everyone to
wake up, so I sorted the presents under the tree. When everyone was awake, we opened the
gifts. I love when everyone reacts to their presents! We all had fun opening our gifts.
While we wait for Christmas dinner, we play with our new
things. My favourite present was a cool camera. Supper is all
over and now I have to wait for next year’s Christmas!
