The Scriptures teach us that our responsibilities in this capacity are: Watch over the spiritual wellbeing of ourselves and each one in the congregation Make certain the church is receiving the spiritual food necessary for growth and good works Guard against false doctrines and error and teach the truth Be an example of a believer in all aspects of our lives. It certainly gives us much joy to see the congregation working together to serve others and growing spiritually and in numbers. However, when problems arise, it causes us much anguish and sleepless nights. This happens to be one of those times. After many hours of study, we want to make the congregation aware of what we believe the Scriptures teach us on the subject of divorce and remarriage. MARRIAGE/DIVORCE Marriage is a covenant between a man, a woman, and God. It was instituted by God in the very beginning when He created Adam and Eve (Genesis 2:24). “He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate,” (Matthew 19:4-6). During His ministry Jesus disputed with the Pharisees on two occasions regarding marriage and divorce, Jesus restates God’s original command, and adds: what God has joined let not man separate. Matthew 19:8—The Scriptures tell us that the reason divorce was permitted under the Old Law because of the hardness of the people’s hearts, but this was not so from the beginning. The Israelites were influenced by the gentile heathens around them. They freely embraced their gods and customs, including their freedom to divorce and remarry. Moses permitted them to do so. The church today is allowing the world to influence our thinking regarding many issues including divorce/ remarriage. All too often Christians are following the world’s standard rather than God’s. ““For the Lord God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one’s garment with violence,” Says the Lord of hosts. “Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously.” (Malachi 2:16). Malachi states that God hates divorce. This Eldership also hates divorce. Divorce places us (the Elders) in a very stressful and almost impossible position of determining not WHAT is right or wrong, but rather WHO is right or wrong. “And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery,” (Matthew 19:9). Jesus gives only one reason for a person to divorce their spouse and marry another without committing adultery. The word He uses is PORNEIA. The “exception” word used is “Porneia” and is translated differently depending on which Bible version one is reading: fornication, sexual immorality, unchasity, marital unfaithfulness. Regardless of which word is used in the translations they all refer to an unlawful sexual act, the only reason recognized by Jesus. Two things that have been suggested by some as a reason for divorce are: LUST and PORNOGRAPHY. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery,” (Matthew 5:27). To LUST is a condition of the heart and does not meet the criteria of Porneia. Lust which is not controlled can certainly lead one to adulterous acts. Pornography is becoming more and more rampant in our society today and is having an impact on the spiritual lives of many Christians. Viewing of pornographic material (magazines, books, and videos) is a sin and is counter to having a spiritual mind. Studies have shown that pornography is dangerously addictive and can alter the brain thought pattern to such a point that normal sexual activity is almost impossible to achieve, and often leads to more and more deviant behavior. Young teenagers and adults are especially susceptible to such changes. Pornography causes marital problems and a breakdown of the home, causing distrust between a husband and wife as well as other problems. Viewing pornography is a sin, but is not a reason for divorce. It does not meet the meaning of Porneia. Extreme addiction to porn can lead one to abandon normal sexual activities with their spouse. If anyone wishes to discuss the subject of marriage/ divorce and remarriage, we will be happy to meet with you.
