Note-1: Procedure originally made for ion source components, but it can be applied to any components
that require cleaning using the ultrasonic bath.
Note-2: Gloves should be worn while handling the components.
1.
Put the ion source components in a small glass container, or beaker.
2.
Pour some chloroform in the beaker.
3.
Put the beaker in the ultrasonic bath, and fill the latter with distilled water up to the “operating
level” as indicated on it.
4.
Turn the power switch of the ultrasonic bath on (3 seconds self-test).
5.
Press “on” to start up the degas process (preset to 5 min).
6.
Once the degas process is over, set up the temperature: press “select option”, then select “set temp”;
press “clear display” to reset to 0; press “set display” to increase the temperature up to 40°C; press
“on” to activate the heating; to monitor the temperature, press “select option”, then select “solution
temp”.
7.
Set up the sonics: press “select option”, then select “set sonics”; press “clear display” to reset to 0;
press “set display” to increase the timer up to 30 min.
8.
Once the temperature has reached 40°C, start the sonics: press “select option”, then select “set
sonics”; press “on”.
9.
Once the 30-min sonics (cleaning) is over, turn the power switch off.
10.
Empty the beaker (dirty chloroform) into the waste container labeled group-B. Suggestion: on top of
the group-B waste container, put a filter (it can be a small container with tiny holes — one has been
specifically made for this purpose out of the bottom of a distilled-water container) then pour the
dirty chloroform into the group-B waste container through the filter (this will prevent small
components such as cathodes, etc, to fall into the group-B waste container); do not use a simple
plastic cup with holes as filter, as chloroform reacts with this sort of plastic and the bottom of the
cup will disintegrate.
11.
Rinse the beaker (together with the components inside) using some acetone, then empty it into the
group-B waste container. (This step is to make sure that no trace of any group-B chemicals end up
into the group-C waste container later on in the procedure — the other way round is not an issue).

12.
Rinse also the filter (together with the components inside) using some acetone above the group-B
waste container. (This step is to make sure that no trace of any group-B chemicals ends up into the
group-C waste container later on in the procedure — the other way round is not an issue).
13.
Put all the components back in the beaker, together with some acetone.
14.
Put the beaker in the ultrasonic bath for a 30-min cleaning: repeat steps 4 to 9.
15.
Empty the beaker (dirty acetone) into the waste container labeled group-C. Use the same filter trick
as in step 10.
16.
Put all the components back in the beaker, together with some ethanol 62%.
17.
Put the beaker in the ultrasonic bath for a 30-min cleaning: repeat steps 4 to 9.
18.
Empty the beaker (dirty ethanol 62%) into the waste container labeled group-C. Use the same filter
trick as in step 10.
Note-3: From this stage, please wear gloves while handling the cleaned components.
19.
Rinse both the empty beaker and filter using distilled water (empty into the group-C waste
container).
20.
Bake the components in the oven at around 100°C for about 10-20 hrs.
21.
Wait for a couple of hours for the components to cool down.
22.
If the components are ion source components, the ion source is ready to be put back together using
these cleaned components. If the components are brand new ones, that have just been made and
meant to be used later on, store them in a plastic bag properly labeled.
