Latin Curriculum Overview 2014-2015 Latin is taught from Year 5 onwards with a view to teaching the key skill areas of translation and comprehension, along with both grammatical and cultural focus. Lessons are delivered in an active and engaging way with a high emphasis on connecting Latin language and Roman culture with other languages and modern life. We aim to enrich our study of Latin through a variety of trips and activities. In Years 5 & 6 we follow the ‘Minimus’ course. This is an engaging introduction to Latin, heavily focussed on Roman life, especially in Britain, and on myths and legends. There are many practical activities, meaning that the grammar elements of the course are absorbed almost without noticing. At KS3 we study Latin grammar more formally, though the approach is still activity-based. As Year 8 marks the end of the compulsory study of Latin, the students will sit an Entry Level Award in order to consolidate what they have learned, and to form the basis for further study should they choose to continue. In addition, we take Year 8 to Bath to see the Roman Baths. This visit forms part of the Entry Level Award. From Year 9, most pupils choose to study two languages out of French, Spanish and Latin. A select group is invited to study all three for a further year. New students entering the school at this point can opt to study Latin as a new subject, and will follow an accelerated programme for a year, which will bring able students to the point where they could select Latin as a GCSE option. At GCSE we study the OCR Syllabus which can be found at: - http://www.ocr.org.uk/Images/71418-specification.pdf At A Level we will study the OCR Syllabus which can be found at:- http://www.ocr.org.uk/Images/82461-specification.pdf You may find the following sites useful for background: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ancient/romans/ http://www.eyewitnesstohistory.com/awfrm.htm OCR produces a free App for phone and tablet, which helps students study and learn the GCSE vocabulary. SPQR is a paid-for App containing three dictionaries, many Latin texts, grammar explanations, flash cards, tests and much more. Latin Year 5 Year 6 Autumn Term Why learn Latin?
