Westward Expansion: Chapter 6 (pages 160 – 181)

Westward Expansion: Chapter 6 (pages 160 – 181)
Immigration and urbanization created a desire for people to expand westward into the “Great American
Desert.” Many people, including immigrants, became frustrated with their current living conditions and ventured into
an unknown land in hopes of finding a better life. The government established land grants to attract people into the
western part of the country to assist with the urbanization problems occurring in the eastern cities. In addition, other
factors encouraged people to move west such as the California Gold Rush and employment opportunities. Within the
chapter, we will analyze the above reasons for westward expansion and examine the conflicts created with Native
Americans during the white man’s’ journey westward.
