A big
thank you
Thank you for sharing our belief that dementia can, and will, be beaten. And thank you for supporting us
by holding a Battle of the brains quiz. Please know that you’ll be helping us with our vital research.
Research is the key to defeating this terrible disease. In fact, it’s our only hope. That’s why we’re dedicated
to doubling the amount spent on research in the next five years. To do that, we need extra funds.
That’s why I’m so thrilled you’re organising a Battle of the brains fundraising quiz of your own.
In this pack you’ll find everything you need to make sure your Battle of the brains Quiz is a resounding
success, with poster, answer sheets and all the questions to challenge your grey matter.
So, let battle commence!
Good luck, and thank you once again.

The fight to
defeat dementia
Why fundraising is so important
in the fight against dementia.
There are 850,000 people in the UK living with dementias including
Alzheimer’s. By 2040 it’s expected that over 1.5 million people will
be living with the disease. The clock is ticking. We must act now to
avoid a public health catastrophe.
No other dementia charity puts as much money behind research. We
know that to defeat dementia we have to attack it from every angle.
We need to exhaust every avenue of scientific investigation. That’s
why every minute of research is so important.
And it’s working. Last year, we made several significant
breakthroughs in the cause, diagnosis and treatment of dementia.
We’re winning battles. By organising a quiz to raise more funds, we
can win even more.

The Guide
Step 1: Decide on a venue
• How big will your event be?
• How many teams would you like to accommodate?
• Do you have a space at work you could use?
• Will you have on-site refreshments?
• Is the venue easy to access, and is there parking?
Hints and Tips:
You can hold a Battle of the brains quiz anywhere
from your living room, to your workplace or a local
hall. You could ask your local pub or other social
venue to donate a space to you. Tell them a bit
about us and how your fundraising quiz is going to
help raise vital funds for dementia research.
Step 2: Securing prizes
How many prizes do you want to award Hints and Tips:
(e.g.just first, second and third place?) and

how much can you spend?
you can show you are legitimately fundraising for

businesses.
• Might your employer or local shops and businesses donate a prize?
•
Step 3: Promoting the quiz
If you want to encourage more than just your family and friends:
• Use our posters and leaflets – you can
always request more
• Email or write to friends and colleagues
• Use Facebook, Twitter or other online resources
• Promote through your local newspaper or
radio station

Step 4: Raising funds
• Set an entry fee per person/team
• Think about how much you would ideally like to raise
• Are there any additional ways you could make money at the event?
For example:
– Hold a raffle
Hints and Tips:
Remember to take into account any costs you may incur from
the venue hire etc. Think about how you are going to manage
collecting the money on the night and if you will need a float.
We have collecting pots and buckets avaliable for your use.
– Ask your employer if they will match-fund any money raised from the quiz
– Charge people for food and drinks,
if appropriate
Step 5: On the day
Here are some suggestions for a smooth-running event:
1. Decorate the venue with ARUK materials
2. Thank everyone for taking part and tell them about where all the money they are raising will go – we can provide you with literature about this.
3. Ask each group to decide on a team name (there could be a prize for the best one!).
4. Hand out answer sheets.
5. Read the questions out, giving correct answers round by round.
6. 7. Have a break after the first few rounds and sell raffle tickets, if you’re having one.
8. Continue with final rounds. Add up final scores. Award prizes and draw the raffle.
Hints and Tips:
Make sure everybody helping knows what is expected of them
in advance. Think about how long you want the quiz to run for
and when you will have breaks. Please note – be safe when
carrying around cash.
Either have a scorekeeper who marks each answer sheet after every round, or get the teams to swap answers and mark each other’s. Be strict on what does and does not constitute an answer! Remember: the quizmaster’s decision is final!
