YEAR 5 LEARNING CHALLENGE HOMEWORK – SPRING 2 Learning challenge – Can you tackle the Highwayman? Please choose one piece of homework every two weeks. Each piece is worth a different amount of house points. Our topic this term is a heritage project that doesn’t lend itself easily to any homework tasks, whilst our science topic is about material changes and again very difficult to fit into manageable homework tasks. Therefore, your homework tasks for this half term are based around the narrative poem ‘The Highwayman’ by Alfred Noyes, which we are studying in English. It is easily available on the internet, but if you would like a paper copy to assist with the homework, just ask and we will provide one. Week 25th February to the 7th March Up to 2 house points Up to 5 house points Verse two of The Highwayman describes his appearance. Using the actual words of the verse, can you turn it into an appropriate shape poem? The Highwayman managed to rob £100 from one of his victims and decides to spend it all on a massive celebration. What could he spend the money on? Use catalogues, or the internet to decide what you would buy for your party and created costed shopping list. Don’t forget there is the Horrible Histories video that we watched in class, which is full of information. You could present your findings as a report, a fact file or a Pic Collage. some music cd’s, drink, decorations or anything else. Write an alternative ending to the Highwayman (it doesn’t have to rhyme but it would be excellent if you could. Maybe the Highwayman could survive and escape with Bess. Or Bess might survive and finally fall in love with Tim. It’s up to you. Up to 10 house points Design a model of either the Highwayman, Bess or Tim using the descriptions in the text to help. Or you could do a coloured, labelled illustration (not a copied picture from the internet). Create a comic strip telling the story of the Highwayman. Try and include as much detail from the original poem as you can.
