January 5, 2015 Team Olsen Together Everyone Achieves More The Pieces of our Day Readers’ Workshop *In reading this week, we will be comparing and contrasting topics and reading passages. We’ll look for key words to help find similarities and differences, and make a venn diagram to organize our ideas. Writers’ Workshop *We will do a few fun writing projects this week before we officially kick off a new unit. We’ll write about our winter break, write New Year’s resolutions, and write an acrostic poem using the word “snowflake”. Our next writing unit is a biography of a person who made a contribution to history. We’ll choose our people this week and begin doing some research in the computer lab. Word Study *Unit 19 focuses on words that have a long e sound. Look for a word sort homework activity to come home on Monday. This is due on Thursday. On Friday, your child will be tested on his/her 5 high frequency words. These need to be spelled correctly and written in a sentence. The words are written on the orange paper attached to the word study homework. Math *In math this week, we’ll do a short unit on motion geometry (slides, flips, turns) and patterns (numbers and shapes). We’ll review and test on Thursday, then take a pretest for Unit 7. Math homework will come home Monday-Wednesday this week (unless finished in class), and is always due the next day.
