Tom the banana seller Humphr Humphreeys Odunga English Tom carries a tray of ripe bananas. 1 Tom goes to the market to sell bananas. 2 People at the market are buying fruit. 3 But no one is buying Tom’s bananas. They prefer to buy fruit from women. 4 “In our community, only women sell fruit,” people say. “What kind of a man is this?” people ask. 5 But Tom does not give up. He calls, “Buy my bananas! Buy my sweet ripe bananas!” 6 One woman picks up a bunch of bananas from the tray. She looks at the bananas carefully. 7 The woman buys the bananas. 8 More people come to the stall. They buy Tom’s bananas and eat them. 9 Soon, the tray is empty. Tom counts the money he earned. 10 Then Tom buys soap, sugar, and bread. He puts the things in his tray. 11 Tom balances the tray on his head and goes home. 12 Tom the banana seller Writer: Humphr Humphreeys Odunga Illustr Illustration: ation: Zablon Alex Nguku Language: English © African Storybook Project, 2015 This work is licensed under a Cr Creativ eativee Commons A Attribution ttribution (CC-B (CC-BY Y 4.0) V Version ersion 4.0 International Licence Disclaimer: Y You ou ar aree fr free ee tto o download, cop copyy, tr translate anslate or adapt this st stor oryy and use the illustr illustrations ations as long as yyou ou attribute or cr credit edit the original author/s and illustr illustrat ator/s. or/s.
