Temperature vs Rate of Dissolution of an Effervescent Tablet

Mastering the Demands of the Ohio Science Standards
~ Effervescent Brand Effectiveness ~
Which brand of effervescent tablets (like Alka-Seltzer) neutralizes an upset stomach
best?
Group size: 2 to 4 students – ideally 3 students
Materials:
Various types of Effervescent tablets
Clear plastic cups
Clock w/second hand
Balance
plastic spoon
craft stick
pH paper or probe
graduated cylinder (optional)
orange juice
Directions:
1. Group member responsibilities: Tallest person will be the materials manager; shortest will be the
project manager and data gatherer; middle height will be the presenter.
2. Write a plan that will allow your group to find out the answer to the above question using only the
materials available. Your plan must include:
• How you will perform the testing
• What is to be measured during the investigation and how it will be recorded
• How you will report your results
Suggestions to help get started:
Gather the materials
In one cup you will measure the change in pH of the orange juice before and after using one
brand of effervescent. In the other cup you will measure the change in pH of the orange juice
before and after using a second brand of effervescent tablet.
Remember to consider and control variables other than the brand of the tablet.

3. Perform the investigation and collect appropriate data.
Teacher Check
4. Summarize your data and write a statement to answer the investigation question and support the
answer with evidence and reasoning that clearly describes what you found out.
5. Be prepared to make a presentation of the results to the rest of the class when called upon.

3. Place a mark about 2/3 of the way up on one cup. This will be the “measuring cup” and will control the
amount of orange juice you put in each of the other cups. Fill the measuring cup, to the mark, with
orange juice and transfer the orange juice into the other cups.
4. Make a data table in the space below to record the pH of each trial before and after testing, the change
in pH, the average change in pH and the mass of each tablet.

Measure the pH of the orange juice in each cup. Record it on the data table.
Open the effervescent tablet pouch of 2 different brands. You will need one whole tablet each.
Mass each of the tablets, record the results on the data table.
Prepare to drop the tablets into the orange juice at exactly the same time.
Start timing as soon as the tablets are dropped into the two cups. Retest the pH after one minute.
Repeat two more times.
10. Average the change in pH.
11. Dispose of the solutions in the sink, rinse out cups and return any unused supplies.

Write a statement in response to the investigation question, supported by evidence and reasoning.
