Black • [email protected] • ext. 308 T hree years ago I was honored to be invited to serve as a scholar/artist-in-residence at the Limmud Conference in London, England. This annual, international event brings together thousands of Jews during the last week of December. We study, socialize, sing, dance, and share ideas for Jewish renewal and continuity. It truly was a remarkable experience that will remain with me for years to come. While I was at Limmud, I saw an exhibit that consisted of photographic portraits of individuals and families from a small Jewish community in Wales. Accompanying each photograph was a written statement by the subjects of the photographs that detailed their relationship to the community and what it meant to them. I came back to Denver from Limmud bursting with new ideas. One of them was to create a similar exhibit here at Temple Emanuel. I brought the idea to our Board of Trustees and, thanks to the incredible work of Trina Reisch, who coordinated everything, Bart Levy, who donated his time and photographic artistry, and Brian Hart, who helped us with the framing, we are ready to unveil “Faces of Emanuel.” Beginning this past summer, we asked a few initial households who represent a wide demographic cross-section of our community to have their pictures taken. We then requested that they write a short paragraph about what membership in Temple Emanuel means to them. Each photograph and paragraph has been professionally matted and framed. The results are strikingly powerful. It is our goal to have a rotating exhibit of members of our congregation that share their involvement in and passion for Temple. It will be on display in the hallway between the library and the social hall. We have installed new lights in the hallway that will help to highlight these beautiful photographs. We expect that each display will rotate every few months. On Friday night, April 15 following our Annual Meeting and prior to services, we will be unveiling “Faces of Emanuel.” I hope to see you there to share in this exciting addition to our congregation. Financial Strength By Steve Stark • [email protected] • ext. 303 T he Temple Emanuel fiscal year ends in June, so we are beginning our plans and budgeting for next year. Dues from each of our members is vitally important. It allows us to continue to properly maintain our campus and it allows us to continue to create high standard levels of worship, programming, and special events. Temple has always been managed in a fiscally responsible manner and we can only continue to be innovative and expand our offerings if everyone pays their fair share. At this time of year, please be sure your dues are current and if you feel you can give a little extra this year that would be appreciated. Thank you for being part of this vibrant community. May we go from strength to strength. 4 APRIL/MAY 2016 INSIDE TEMPLE On Philanthropy By Francie Miran • [email protected] • ext. 335 I ncluding Temple Emanuel in your estate plan adds to the Temple’s legacy by helping grow the Temple’s endowment and ensuring that future generations can experience our wonderful religious community. Here is some information to consider when doing your estate planning. What is Estate Planning? Regardless of our wealth, social status, or stage of life, we all have an estate. It’s the total of everything we own – our homes, cars, investments, bank accounts, furniture, personal possessions, even the socks in our drawers. Everything that we think of as ‘ours’ comprises our estate. So what is estate planning? As a simple definition, estate planning is our opportunity to decide (today) how those things will be shared with others when we eventually pass away. It’s the chance we have to make these decisions ourselves. Does Everyone Need an Estate Plan? Yes, and many misconceptions exist. Some of us think we’re not wealthy enough to need an estate plan, but that confuses any potential tax issues with the chance to share our estate the way we’d like (while minimizing legal fees and court costs, too). Good planning can actually mean more to families with modest means, since they can afford to lose the least. People might also delay planning because they think they’re not old enough, are too busy, have plenty of time in the future, or just don’t realize what they need. Wait…You Mean I’ve Already Got an Estate Plan? Well, strictly speaking, this is also true. Since no one could ever guess what another person’s wishes might have been, Colorado has created a formula to distribute the assets for anyone that dies without a valid estate plan. But rarely does this formula represent a person’s true wishes. Why? Because no single formula could ever anticipate the vast array of family dynamics, trusted friends, or even a cherished community like Temple Emanuel – all of whom a person might like to benefit in differing ways. What’s Next? Hopefully this article helps identify the need to create a sound estate plan. Going forward, here are a few things to consider: If you don’t have an attorney, consider finding one. Ask families members or friends and neighbors if they have an attorney they trust. Pick someone that inspires your confidence. The first component is a Will or Living Trust. Again, it’s your chance to decide how your assets will be distributed to those you love. In addition, a few other documents typically comprise an estate plan. In general, these can include a medical directive, a financial power of attorney, and a living will. Please note that not all assets transfer through a Will or Living Trust. Some may be transferred via beneficiary designation (IRA, life insurance) or other arrangement (real estate deed). A careful review these assets is another important step. Finally, please don’t put it off. It’s not just about your peace of mind. Life is unpredictable and a sound estate plan is one of the best gifts you can leave for those you love. If you would like more information about estate planning or the Live On Society at Temple Emanuel, please contact me at [email protected] or 303.388.4013, x335. All inquiries will be held in strict confidence. GOT TUNA? Jewish Family Service depends on us for tuna. Thank you for continuing to bring in cans of tuna when you come to Temple! www.EmanuelDenver.org 5 INSIDE TEMPLE Minutes of the 140th Annual Meeting of Temple Emanuel Friday, March 20, 2015 The meeting was called to order at 6:26 p.m. by President Ellen Abrams. MOTION: Approve the minutes from the Annual Meeting 2014: PASSED Ellen reviewed the important events of the previous year. The January concert & fundraiser honoring Janet Bronitsky had attendance close to 1,000 people, engaged more than 50 volunteers, and netted the most money ever raised at a Temple annual fundraiser. Janet will be retiring on June 30th, 2015; a Shabbat service and dinner in her honor will be held for the 141st on May 29. Janet’s children and Annual Meeting of grandchildren will be in town for this low key, family oriented Temple Emanuel, event. The search for our new Friday, April 15. The committee expects to make a decision and 6:00 p.m. an announcement in April, 2015. Meeting and Awards Ellen acknowledged four retiring Board members—Jeff 6:45 p.m. Brynan, Jen Eichberg, Deb Faces of Emanuel Herman, and Jill Katchen—and thanked them for their efforts Dedication and commitment. She expressed 7:00 p.m. a hope that they would remain active in our community. MOTION: Approve these nominees. PASSED. Please join us Early Childhood Center Director Susan Wartchow introduced the ECC Volunteer of the Year Julie Eber. Susan thanked Julie for being an inspiration and making her first year as Director a wonderful 6 APRIL/MAY 2016 experience. As Chair of the Young Family Shabbat Experience and the High Holy Day Experience, President of the ECC Parent Committee, and much more, Julie is a wonderful mother, a fabulous spouse, and a committed and passionate volunteer. Executive Director Janet Bronitsky introduced Volunteer of the Year Justin Levy as “one of Temple’s best kept secrets.” Justin has co-chaired Mitzvah Day for the past three years, working incredibly hard. Mitzvah Day is among the largest events we do at Temple, and would not happen without the direction of Justin and his cochair Sarah Goldblatt. Janet thanked Justin for all he does, and reminded everyone that Mitzvah Day this year is May 17. Janet also thanked Ellen Abrams and the entire board for all their work at keeping things running smoothly. Director of Education Ron Leff introduced Caryn Herman, a tireless advocate for our youth and youth programs. As a member of Temple’s Board of Trustees, and in her previous job as the Assistant Director of our Early Childhood Center, Caryn has made sure that we are always thinking of our youth as the wonderful future of our congregation. We are sad that Caryn is leaving our community, but thank her for all she has done and wish her much luck in North Carolina. Incoming Brotherhood President Greg Ostravich thanked outgoing President Justin Blue for his five years of dedicated service, and acknowledged Matthew Heit for his 12 years of extraordinary volunteer service on Brotherhood’s annual Blood Drive. Greg introduced and thanked Brotherhood’s Volunteer of the Year Mitch Brodsky and characterized him as “always there, always helpful, always with a smile.” Carol Ann Warren offered the Sisterhood report as its president. She noted that Women of Reform Judaism represents 65,000 women across North America and the world, and that Temple Emanuel’s chapter is extraordinary. The past year’s programs included a visit to the Chihuly exhibit at the Botanic Gardens, the 3rd Annual PMS Night, Ladies Night Out, Mahjong Night, the Sisterhood Passover Seder, and the collection of holiday gifts through the Matanah project, to name just a few. This year Sisterhood baked over 1,800 latkes, gave Hanukah candles to college students, sponsored Tu B’shvat seders, ran the Purim bake sale, sponsored the Young Family Shabbat Experience, gave a gift to every student who became bar or bat mitzvah at Temple, donated over $26,000.00 to Friedman Club, and awarded a full scholarship to the URJ Kutz Camp. Sisterhood provides many ways for women to connect with their Temple and larger communities. Carol Ann presented the Sisterhood Volunteer of the Year Award to Mary Lee Mohr, who thanked her husband for “technical support.” Rabbi Black began his report by noting, in Temple’s 140th year, the significance of the number 140. The ancient practice of gematria involves taking the numerical value of words and phrases and finding hidden meaning. The Hebrew word HaKahal adds up to 140. HaKahal means “the community,” and there is no better word to sum up the past year at Temple Emanuel. Rabbi Black highlighted a number of key programs and initiatives, the many ways that we engage our congregants in meaningful and important ways. Rabbi Black then acknowledged and thanked the Temple leadership and staff, in particular Janet Bronitsky and Cantor Regina Heit as they approach retirement. (The full text of Rabbi Black’s comments can be found at rabbijoeblack.blogspot. com/2015/03/rabbis-annual-meetingreport-2015.html). The meeting was adjourned at 7:13 p.m. ENGAGEMENT Kavod on the Road: Bringing Services, Programs to Seniors K avod Senior Life, a Denver-based organization that provides seniors a broad range of housing and support services that reflect the spiritual, social, and cultural values of Jewish tradition, has taken its mission on the road! Kavod is the Hebrew word for honor or respect. Kavod on the Road, in partnership with Temple Emanuel, brings programs and services to community seniors, regardless of affiliation or where they live. There are several main components of Kavod on the Road, according to Outreach Coordinator Sara Shvartzman: Programming includes speakers, educational programs and fun social activities at community centers and synagogues. From Oy to Joy monthly publication: A free Denver Jewish senior activity guide (of events from community agencies) published and distributed by email, mail, and at partner agencies and synagogues. Support for grassroots programming: Jewish & Widowed, a community-initiated program that provides discussion groups, dining, travel and cultural events. Kavod provides marketing and programming support to a dedicated layleadership committee. Large, community-wide events: Our Annual Fall Event “The Age of Love,” a film screening and reception, was held in February. Our Annual Spring Conference, “L’Chaim! Jewish Wisdom on Aging Well” is a free, oneday resource conference planned for Sunday, June 5 at Temple Emanuel. While we strive to do this work every day, once a year our Temple membership comes together in great numbers to perform these mitzvot and build community. This year on Sunday May 15, we will mark our 20th year of doing this important and holy work. Mitzvah Day activities begin at 9:00 a.m. with a community gathering and an exciting kickoff program in the Sanctuary at Temple Emanuel. The day will conclude with a delicious BBQ lunch provided by Temple’s Brotherhood from noon to 1:30 p.m. Whether you have been part of Mitzvah Day before or never participated, this is your year to volunteer! There are numerous opportunities for individuals, families, and groups of friends to work together to make the world a better place. The three options include: 1 Off-site Projects Volunteers can register to participate in “hands on” projects, beginning at various times and locations around Denver. Some involve physical labor such as trail maintenance or gardening, while others involve interaction with seniors or children. Some projects have a minimum age requirement. See all the project offerings and details at www.MitzvahDay.net. 2 Mitzvah Village Located at Temple Emanuel in the Social Hall, adults and families with children ages 9 and up can participate in several hands-on projects all in one place – sorting hygiene products, bagging ingredients for meals, making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and more. 3 Junior Mitzvah Day This is an awesome way for young children ages 3 to 8, with their parents, to get a taste of what it feels like to do mitzvot. Have fun cooking, painting, and creating as you move from station to station at your own pace. Find all the details of the day and a registration form at www.MitzvahDay.net, or contact Steve Brodsky, 303.388.4013 or [email protected] with any questions. We look forward to seeing you at Mitzvah Day! www.EmanuelDenver.org 9 R E L I G I O U S E D U C AT I O N V’shinantam – And You Shall Teach Them By Ron Leff • [email protected] • ext. 325 M y preparations for Passover have changed considerably since becoming a parent. I used to worry about preparing my home, cleaning out the chametz, leavened products, and purchasing the Kosher for Passover foods. I’d decide whether or not to make the trip back to Michigan for the sedarim or stay here and find friends to share the holiday with. Now, as a parent, my focus is on making Passover memories. When I think back to my childhood there are so many different memories I have connected to the celebration of Passover. I remember being at my grandparent’s house with aunts, uncles, and cousins. I remember asking the Four Questions (yeah, I was always the youngest). I remember stealing and hiding the afikomen, I remember Grandpa Harry, of blessed memory, leading the seder. And, of course, the amazing food Grandma Sonia, of blessed memory, served. I remember searching the house for gym shoes, because that was always what my grandparents gave us as the afikomen gift. Now it’s my responsibility to make Passover memories for my children. I hope that I can help you create memories for yours. Please take a look at Jewish Family page of the Temple Website – www.EmanuelDenver.org/learning/jewishhome. I have shared many different resources that I hope will help you in the task of making memories. If I can be of assistance, please be sure to contact me. Best wishes to you and your family for a wonderful and meaningful Passover celebration. May you create wonderful, lasting memories. Whether it is Mother’s Day Tea, Truck Day (the day where large work vehicles come to our parking lot!), Tiny Tots Orchestra, or Graduation, we are busy making lasting memories for all the children and members of our school community. Our “Love you to the Moon” themed ECC Auction on Saturday, April 16, will support our natural scape playground. Thanks to the hard work of our amazing Parent Committee and family supporters! During Passover, we spend a lot of time cooking and getting creative with matzah! We also talk about freedom, the meaning of the seder plate, Moses, and Egypt. In the eyes of young children, this often develops into concepts like the ability to make choices and to stick with those choices. Don’t miss our Young Family Shabbat events on Friday evenings (April 8 and May 13). There will be exciting programs along with these dinners and services. Also, come on Saturday mornings at 9:00 a.m. (April 16 and May 21) for breakfast, stories, music, and fun! Congratulations to our ECC volunteers of the year, Marni Reinstein and Myra Skinner, for their dedication to our school. BROTHERHOOD Brotherhood Review By Greg Ostravich [email protected] or [email protected] W e wish everyone a Happy Passover! Since Temple Emanuel has its Annual Meeting in April where events over the past year are recapped, I would like to review what the Brotherhood has done the last year. We honored Mitch Brodsky as the Brotherhood Member of the Year. Jacob Bendalin was selected by his peers for the Milstein Award for the outstanding male confirmand. We had a successful blood drive in March. We got our grill game on for Mitzvah Day in the spring and the Religious School Back-to-School event in the fall. We even got Rabbi Black behind the grill! Brotherhood gave out 8 scholarships to help Temple youth with college expenses. Brotherhood Bagels and Lox breakfast continued with topics including how to keep young adults in college engaged in the Jewish community and the importance of donating blood product as a part of our annual blood drive. We also assisted Temple librarian, Rita Dahlke with a film series program and cooking events. At our Annual Fundraising concert, Brotherhood members helped out with CD sales at the Annual Fundraiser. Finally we supported Temple athletics including the softball league which is gearing up again. For details on scholarships or to join our softball league which begins in May, go to the Temple website and visit the Brotherhood page.
