DNA and Telog operate in a new way

Case DNA
DNA and Telog operate in a new way
DNA, the full-service telecommunications enterprise, is always developing its mobile networks
with new technology and new base stations, and expanding its capacity. The network
modernisations and updates carried out by DNA stand for better coverage and increasing
data transfer rates. Telog together with equipment suppliers secure the DNA network reform
with their forward-looking and high-quality project management model.
DNA is a telecommunications enterprise that offers Finnish
private customers, communities and companies high-quality,
latest technology telephone, data, mobile and television
services. In addition, DNA offers high-quality network and
telecommunications services for service providers. DNA is
a combination of latest information, decades of experience
and enthusiasm towards development. Telog shares the same
characteristics and together with the equipment supplier met
DNA’s needs of being the pioneer in network development by
providing them with the network based project management
model.
Pioneers and challengers
It was 2010 and 4G LTE network was emerging. DNA wanted to
ensure the high-quality customer experience in the future as
well, and decided to begin updating the network into modern
4G generation networks in the largest cities. Traditionally,
the operation modes of tele operators are considered slow
and inflexible but in this project the impression was proved
to be outdated. DNA began the surveys and comparisons to
find the best provider of a comprehensive modernisation and
expansion of the mobile network. Equipment supplier Ericsson
and Telog as its subcontractor convinced DNA with their
combined expertise in network construction and with brave
and different operation models.
“Today, the 4G LTE services are offered nationwide and
the capacity is constantly expanding according to the
customers’ needs,” says Jarkko Laari, the director of
radio networks at DNA.
The modernisation and expansion project of the existing 2G
and 3G DNA mobile networks and increasing the coverage of
4G LTE network has been in progress since 2011, and it has
progressed as planned. With its new partner network model,
Telog has enabled the rapid progression of the project, and
the persevering and high-quality results.
The maximum rates and the capacities of all of the mobile
data technologies will be increased during the project.

At the same time, coverage will be improved by minimising
RF attenuation in base station solutions. In practice, this will
improve the customer experience of mobile internet, tablets
and mobile phones, as the service becomes faster and more
reliable. According to the latest independent speed tests the
results of the project are undeniable: the DNA mobile data
speeds are the highest in nine out of ten biggest cities in
Finland.
“Telog was responsible for the output of the project as a
whole, which included plans of installation, constructional
work, changing and expanding the base station technology,
as well as testing and documentation,” says Timo Immonen,
the chief operating officer of Telog.
Minimising downtime
The network update project used an optimal way of carrying out
the network constructions. The Telog operation model is efficient
and it is developed with the customer and partner network in
order to meet the network construction needs of today.
“Everything is installed and furnished as much as possible
at the Telog logistics hub. This way we can minimise the
service downtime on location,” Timo Immonen explains.
The users of the network hardly even notice the downtime.
The project has brought about enormous changes to the
networks.
“We are making a significant change and a great investment,
so we are more than happy with Telog’s ability to find new
perspectives and comply with the plans,” says Arto Eklund
from DNA.
“Telog operates with a new type of partner network which
consists of independent entrepreneurs. This model
guarantees that the right people are in the right place at
the right time,” says Timo Immonen.
