The sun shone, the band played, and the garden filled with wellwishers wanting to say goodbye. The couple received a beautiful bench, crafted at HMP Verne on Portland, a basket of china provided free by London’s Dorchester Hotel, where they will also enjoy Cream Tea, the Council’s official ash tray, and a flower bed of Nicotiana, grown from seeds provided by our twin town of Lubbecke in Germany. Alistair Chisholm recorded Dennis’s achievements in a “town cry”, and Mayor Stella Jones thanked Dennis and Sue for their dedicated and successful service for over two decades. In addition to the existing Outside Gym, four new pieces of play equipment will appear at the beginning of the summer. The £20,000 cost has been jointly funded by the Town Council, Poundbury Residents Association, Dorset Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, the Dorset Youth Opportunity Fund and by the Duchy of Cornwall as part of their planning commitment for the Poundbury development. The equipment will be erected and maintained by the Town Council. Stephen Hammond, who suggested the need for a table. Bats and balls are available from the refreshment kiosk run by Rethink, or please feel free to bring your own. Most of the works were necessary to maintain the structure of the building, particularly its stonework, but our contractors Tudor Rose, did take the opportunity to re paint the metalwork, replace a number of broken roof slates and clean and paint the three clock faces. The building is an excellent venue for weddings and receptions, business seminars, trade sales and conferences, private parties, dances and a whole host of other possibilities. New Waste Collection service dates announced Dorchester will be part of the next stage of the introduction of the ‘recycle for Dorset’ collection service, which is already being used in Christchurch, East and North Dorset. The Dorset Waste Partnership (DWP), which provides waste services on behalf of West Dorset District Council and six other councils, is already offering the opportunity to sign up for a fortnightly garden waste collection for residents in the town, starting in November. The optional service costs £35 a year for a 240-litre wheelie bin collected every fortnight, all-year-round. You can pay at www.dorsetforyou.com/gardenwaste or by calling (01305) 221040. The closing date for a November start is 31 July – or you can pay before 18 October for a collection starting next March. For information on how to book the 5 different spaces in the Corn Exchange and Town Hall building please check out our Facebook page, or contact us on 265840. Jake, of Tudor Rose, cleaned and painted all three clock faces.—he could still see them in his sleep. The Mayor’s charity focus: Dorset Advocacy In her acceptance speech Stella Jones identified her desire to raise the profile of some of the less well known charities that work in the town. Dorset Advocacy’s volunteers provide a confidential service to help their clients to speak up when they need to defend their rights. In particular advocates help clients to get the recognition and support they need to live their lives their own way. Simple examples might include a tenant with a disability who needs help with discussions with their landlord, or a patient not getting the level of care that they deserve in hospital. Volunteers help the client to get their points across and can put them in touch with other agencies who can provide additional support. The Mayor recently attended Dorset Advocacy’s 10th birthday celebrations, and gained a greater understanding of the vital work that they carry out on behalf of Dorchester’s more vulnerable residents from their Poundbury base. If you know someone who you think might benefit from their help, or if you think you have the skills and time available to become a volunteer or fundraiser, please give them a ring on 01305 251033 or take a look at their That is when the full ‘recycle for Dorset’ service will be rolled out. The scheme aims to increase recycling, drive down costs and reduce landfill. The standard service consists of: A fortnightly recycling collection, using a 240-litre wheelie bin for paper and cardboard, plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays, cans and aerosols and your green box for glass A weekly food waste collection, using a 23-litre lockable bin and a 7-litre kitchen caddy A fortnightly rubbish collection, using a 140-litre wheelie bin Households will be sent a letter and leaflet explaining the service during August. The service is designed to be flexible. Households that cannot use the standard containers, need assisted collections, or have other specific requirements will be able to submit requests online or by phone from mid August to 18 October. It is very important that residents use this opportunity to shape the service they receive before the bins are delivered. The DWP will be holding a series of roadshows where you will be able to see the bins and ask questions. The first confirmed roadshow in Dorchester is 10am-1pm on Wednesday 4 September at the Corn Exchange. More dates will be confirmed shortly. The Town Council was delighted to hear that businesses in the town centre have agreed to carry on with their BID, a Business Improvement District in which businesses agree to pay extra business rates to be spent in their area, for another 5 years. The Town Council is keen to work closely with the BID to develop the attractiveness and viability of the town, both to attract new visitors and to give residents the best possible shopping and service experience locally. The boards also include the “Dorchester Dormouse Trail” for younger residents and visitors. They all have smartphone QR codes which provide lots of additional background information, including the answers for the trail. Once installed you will come across them throughout the town, at locations including Fordington Green, Maumbury Rings, Fairfield and South Street. Often it’s the simple things that can make a real difference. The Council was pleased to work with the BID to refurbish the benches in South Street over the winter period. The Council provided the labour, the BID provided materials, and the benches look a lot better as a result. Visit our website at www.dorchester-tc.gov.uk
