SAN DIEGO – March 4, 2105 - SCOUT @ Quarters D pays tribute to the legendary fabric designer and
founder of The Thai Silk Company Jim Thompson with an installation featuring the designer’s
emblematic style set within the Scout aesthetic. Each year, Creative Director Paul Scott Silvera selects an
influential designer and creates a temporary exhibit honoring their work. Past tributes have honored
David Hicks and Rose Cummings.
SCOUT will devote the main showroom at their mercantile, located in the renovated historic Officer’s
Quarters D at NTC Liberty Station, to the designer’s signature style. The installation will feature
Thompson's Thai silks, vibrant color schemes and signature modern meets antique twist. In conjunction
with the installation, SCOUT will also be celebrating the 3rd anniversary of its Liberty Station mercantile.
The collection will feature the flawlessly brilliant fabrics creating by unique dying and weaving
techniques. The textures and touch of these incredible fabrics benefit from Jim Thompson’s decades of
experience with luxury handspun and hand woven textiles created from the finest natural fibers. The
vibrant, engaging and breathtaking selection of fabrics will be featured on furniture, pillows, window
treatments as well as outdoor furniture featuring a new No. 9 collection designed by Richard Smith.
“Jim Thompson’s contribution to the revival of hand woven silk is unparalleled,” said Silvera, in
explaining his decision to honor the designer. “His story is incredibly compelling. He’s the Amelia Earhart
of interior design and while the mystery surrounding his disappearance is compelling, it’s his design
aesthetic, his passion, sense of discovery and business acumen that appeals to me the most.”
The opening for the installation will be April 2nd and will be on view through the end of September. A
sophisticated, invite-only cocktail party will be held to celebrate both the installation opening and the
anniversary, featuring bites from Café Chloe and specialty cocktails from Snake Oil Provisions.
ABOUT JIM THOMPSON
Jim Thompson was an American architect and art collector born in 1906 who became interested in stage
and costume design as a director of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. After serving as a military officer in
World War II, he settled in Bangkok and was captivated by Thailand and its culture, particularly the art of
hand-woven Thai silk, with its remarkable range of colors and textures. At that time, the craft of silk
weaving was in steep decline, threatened by machine-made fabrics and the advent of synthetic yarns.
Yet Jim Thompson believed Thai silk would appeal to textile lovers in America and Europe and he was
right. Jim Thompson dedicated his life to organizing a network of artisans, helping to upgrade their
looms, introducing new techniques and designs thereby enabling Thai weavers to create silks that would
dazzle the world. By 1950 he had founded The Thai Silk Company aimed in part at sustaining the
traditional livelihoods, culture and dignity of local weavers and silk farmers.
Jim Thompson fabrics soon won a devoted following among interior designers, couturiers and creators of
costumes for stage and screen including a breakthrough with Broadway’s The King and I. By the 1960s,
Thai silk had become world renowned. In 1967 Jim Thompson disappeared mysteriously while
vacationing in Malaysia, yet the firm has carried on his vision of quality, innovation and benefits to
society.
