NEW IDEA
SUBMISSIONS

New Idea Discussion
—  Purpose
◦  Get input from the community on new requests
◦  Input will be used at board meetings for planning
purposes (both this year and next), with planned
communication back to the community with
recommended actions.
—  Please
Note…
◦  Just because something is included for discussion,
it doesn’t mean there is money for it.
◦  Even if you hate the idea, please be constructive
with input to avoid hurt feelings.
New Idea: Running Club Automation
—
Goals
◦  Reduce time and effort for parent volunteers so we don’t burn
them out
—
Summary
◦  Student Lap Tracker: Online program that uses scanners to track
each student’s laps. Details
—
Details
◦  Each student will have a printed card with a bar code on it for scanning.,
which will take all the work out of managing students mileage and give the
kids an accurate account of their progress at all times.
—
Timing
◦  Request is to start this spring
—
Cost
◦  $995 to start (includes 4 scanners)
◦  $795 annually (but we will save about $300 on current expenses,
so net increase of $500 to the running club budget).
New Idea: Garden Club Projects
—
Goals
—
Summary
◦  Campus beautification, improved morale, gardening
science, long-term enrichment.
◦  Overall funding for garden projects, starting with a storage
shed
◦  Plan to work in coordination with overall campus
construction project plan
—
Details
◦  Current request is for a shed for gardening tool storage
—
Timing
◦  Request is for a shed now, with additional funding for
other projects in the future.
—
Cost
◦  Shed cost is $600-800
New Idea:Valentines Art Project
—
Goals
◦  Art project for the kids, campus beatification
—
Summary
◦  Students create art that can be staked into dirt beds around campus.
—
Details
◦  The art would be wooden hearts screwed onto wooden stakes (3 feet high) that
could go in the ground.
◦  Parents would create these and students could paint them with red, pink and
white and decorate with sparkles. We would seal them with spar varnish for
longevity. T
◦  his is an item that could be stored in the garden shed and put out year after year.
—
Timing
◦  This would be done after school or on weekends during the last week of January
—
Cost
◦  The cost per 50 students would be under $4OO for supplies The variable is that
we need a parent volunteer who is good with a jigsaw to cut the hearts out. lf no
one volunteers, a handy man can do this for an additional $200.
New Idea: School Supplies
—  Goals
◦  Provide needed instructional supplies to teachers
—  Summary
◦  The district funding provided for basic supplies is
almost gone, but we still have 5 months of school
left.
—  Details
◦  Funds for basic supplies
—  Timing
◦  Now through end of school year
—  Cost
◦  Up to $4500 estimated

Next Steps:
Attend Board of Education Meeting
—  Where?
◦  Education Center Auditorium, 4100 Normal
Street, 92103
—  When?
◦  1/13/2015 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM.
◦  Be there at 4:45 pm wearing Longfellow gear!
◦  We are hoping that our issue is discussed in
first 30 minutes. Board of Education: Why?
—
—
Why did the project slip almost 2 years?
A/C Project:
◦  Approximately $1.5 million was allocated for the A/C project,
which was expected towards the end of this school year/next
year .
◦  When the modernization project started, those funds were
rolled into this project. Because the modernization project has
now been delayed, that also caused a delay to the A/C project.
◦  There have been many school closure days due to the heat, and
even when the school is not closed, many of the classrooms are
unbearably hot, which a significant hindrance to learning.
◦  Request: Expedite the A/C for the classrooms that are not
undergoing major construction. e.g. The bungalows are not being
replaced. The A/C units for the bungalows are expected to be
window units, so those should be able to be installed now.
◦  Open Question: are the permanent classrooms getting new
roofs? If not, can we proceed with A/C for those?
Construction Committee

Construction Committee Plan
—  Steve
wrote up a detailed list of questions
—  We are working to setup an initial
meeting with the project team to get
questions answered, and then regular
meetings to ensure we stay on track.
—  Dina will talk with principal from Patrick
Henry to see how their project went and
what suggestions they might have for us.
—  We will also investigate other channels
that may be able to help us.
