Lent is a penitential season of forty days, not counting Sundays, that starts on Ash
Wednesday and do not resume until Holy Saturday/Easter Vigil. The word, “Lent” comes
from the Anglo-Saxon word “lencten”, which means spring. The forty days represent the
time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to
begin his ministry.
We use the time of Lent as a time of repentance, fasting, and preparing our hearts for the
coming of Christ. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. We are called to use this
time to focus on our relationships with God, where we choose to give up a habit that
pulls us from the love of God, or take on an action that moves us closer to God.
During Lent the church changes its hangings to purple. Also during church services, we
stop saying the “a-word” (the “a-word” being Alleluia or Halleluiah), and do not say
Alleluia until Easter Vigil.
Lenten Practices
Lent is NOT: Lent is not a time to start a new diet and lose a few pounds by giving up
alcohol or chocolate. This ONLY is a Lenten practice if these acts pull you from the love of
God, or you are giving up these luxury items to partake in a form of a fast. But giving
them up as a way to lose weight is not a Lenten practice.
Lent Is: Lent is the time to take on healthier practices, which draws us closer to the love of
God. This may mean we have to look at our physical, mental, or spiritual health and see
where we are disconnected in our lives and where we are not fully living in covenant with
God. Many people take on a new discipline of worship and study. I like taking on one
that does all three and this year I will participating in A 40-Day Spiritual Fitness
Program: Christ Walk by Anna Fitch Courie, a book that can be found in our bookstore.
At Eastern Shore Chapel we will be offering several programs that you can participate in:



Wednesday Nights: Lee Davis will be leading Fr. Richard Rohr’s “Everything Belongs”. This group will meet on Wednesdays, March 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th, and
April 5th, immediately following 5:45 P.M. mid-week communion service in the
small chapel and Wednesday night supper.
Fr. Tom will lead a book study of Richard Rohr's book, “Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life”. Class will meet on Sundays: March 12, 26, and April
2, in the rector's office at 9:00 a.m. Register by emailing Fr. Tom
Rev. Julia will lead Jumpstart on Sundays: March 19, 26, and April 2 at 9:00 a.m.
in the parlor This class is offered to anyone, from those who have just walked into
our church to those who have been in the Episcopal Church for a long time and anyone in between. It is a great way to do a general overview of our theology, our traditions, and offers anyone a chance to become more involved in our parish life and ministries.

Book Store.
First Friday Men’s Breakfast
PS. If you have chosen to give up coffee or chocolate during
Lent, then please be aware that Sundays in Lent are not
counted in the forty days because each Sunday represents a
"mini-Easter" and the reverent spirit of Lent is tempered
with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection. For more information:
Hot coffee, good fellowship, good (inexpensive) breakfast and
light Bible Study. That’s what we do beginning at 7:00 a.m. on
the first Friday of each month in the Parish Hall. Fellowship
starts at 7:00, breakfast is served at 7:30 and we are done by 8:30.

Note from Senior Warden
One thing that we all share in common is that we love Eastern Shore Chapel. Working to improve our relationships
and the way that we do things is a small effort that we need
to make to ensure that Eastern Shore Chapel is on the best
possible path. Without doubt, the Holy Spirit is here and
will guide us as has been the case for our forefathers in faith
for 327 years. As I communicated with you via letter in January and at the Annual Meeting, the Vestry and Rector have
requested that Bishop Hollerith send a consultant to help us
to improve as a church and to address areas of difficulty as
we move forward. Dr. Beverley Buston has been appointed
and will be visiting on several occasions in February and
March. Dr. Buston brings a wealth of experience and this
process needs your participation. The first opportunity to
participate will be on 5 March; there will be sessions in the
parish hall at 0900 and at 1145.
Wednesday Dinners
Everyone is welcome at Wednesday Dinner. Bring
your neighbors, friends and your whole family for a
great meal, made from scratch. Any proceeds beyond
expenses go to the Chapel Pantry food budget. Dinner is every
Wednesday from 6:30-7:15 in the Parish Hall. No reservations
needed, just come and enjoy! The menu for March is

Lenten Adult Education 2017
The forty days before Easter are quickly approaching! Lent is generally observed as a time of penance by abstaining
from festivities, by almsgiving, and by devoting more than the
usual time to religious exercises. Lent begins on: Ash Wednesday, March 1st. Ashes will be offered at the 7 A.M, Noon, and 7
P.M. services in the church, with silence instead of a sermon/
homily. Ashes will also be offered to busy PDS parents in the
Parlor after drop-off and at pick-up. The following is a run-down
of the spiritual and fellowship opportunities planned at ESC before Holy Week.( Easter Sunday is April 16th.) Future E-pistles
will cover particular offerings in more detail. Sign up by emailing
the facilitator.
The Third Tuesday
Supper Group
The Third Tuesday Supper Group will meet on Tuesday,
March 21 at 6:30 p.m., at the home of Henry & Mary Von
Kolnitz, 1805 Duke of York Quay. C/o hosts are Pat & Bill
Hunter . All are welcome. Please bring a dish to share. Call
Henry & Mary at (481-1505) for directions.

5 Marks of Love. Beginning on February 26th and
continuing through Lent, ESC will have a group of
folks participating in The Society of Saint John the
Evangelist’s 5 Marks of Love Lenten program. Here is
a course description from the SSJE site:
come together for open and honest discussion of what we believe. E-mail Lee Davis [email protected] to sign-up. Call if
you have questions -757.412.2004.
Jump Start: This 3 week class will be held for newcomers and
not so newcomers alike and will provide an overview of the Anglican/Episcopal Church as well as ESC mission and ministry.
Rev. Julia, beginning Sunday, March 19th, 9:15 A.M., in the
parlor, [email protected].
If we are “marked as Christ’s own,” what are the “marks of
love” that characterize the Divine Life abiding and at work
within us?
Bible 101: In the Parish Hall each Sunday in Lent, before Holy
Week, between the 8 & 10:15 A.M. services. Carter Sinclair and
Scott Darnell. [email protected].
Starts on Sunday, February 26, 2017, in time for Ash
Wednesday 2017 – then available as an anytime course. This
six-week series provides the opportunity to observe and to reflect on the ways in which the Divine Life expresses itself in and
through us; individually and in our faith communities, as well as
in the world around us. Each week will explore the Anglican
Marks of Mission (Tell, Teach, Tend, Transform and Treasure)
through videos, questions and exercises so we can speak more
clearly and act truthfully, motivated always by hearts marked
by God’s love. The Marks of Love are not simply a list of tasks to
be checked off one after the other; they are signs that our life is
rooted and grounded in the Being of God. The Brothers of SSJE
will draw on their own monastic spirituality to help us balance
action with contemplation, so that our words and deeds proceed from the deepest places of our hearts, where God
dwells. The resource encourages us to reflect on how we should
live, not what we should do. Materials and videos are free online
and as downloads.”
For Eastern Shore Chapel, this is an opportunity to participate
in a program conducted by the Brothers at SSJE. We envision
this as a virtual group of ESC parishioners who would like to
participate in a vibrant online Lenten Program, and/or can't
usually attend meetings at church for whatever reason (health,
mobility, business travel, etc.). Participants in this program will
be able to take advantage of the online videos, written resources, and commentary provided by the online program. Additionally, our ESC group will exchange ideas, commentary and
mutual support via group e-mails. This program is self-paced
time-wise, although there will be a steady flow of daily and
weekly resources flowing from SSJE.
If you are interested in participating, please go to this link:
http://ssje.org/ssje/5marksoflove/and sign-up with SSJE. They
will enroll you in the course and provide links for easy download of course material and will start sending you e-mails and
videos to familiarize you with the program.
Additionally, Please send Jim Deppe your contact info. Jim will
be our Eastern Shore Chapel facilitator for this program and
will be in contact as the group comes together. His contact info
is: e-mail: [email protected], cell: 757-636-1169.
Hot Cross Buns and Rabbi Zoberman: On Palm Sunday,
April 9th, 9:00 A.M., traditional hot cross buns will be served
in the Parish Hall while our Rabbi Scholar discusses what the
Jewish Passover meant to 1st century Jews. No adult education
or Sunday School. In addition, Sunday School Classes will continue in Lent, unless otherwise noted.
An Episcopal Relief and Development Lenten daily devotional
and ERD hope chests (collection boxes) will be placed in the
Narthex beginning on Sundays in February. Collection boxes
can be used daily to put in loose change when saying one's prayers. ERD boxes will be collected on Easter Sunday. The Holy
Week Schedule of Events, to include services during the week
and Easter Sunday, will be promulgated in an upcoming Epistle.

KAIROS
Falling Upward: A spiritual discussion group using Richard
Rohr's recent book, Falling Upward. The focus of this discussion is on the "second half of life", Sunday mornings beginning
March 12th, 9:15 A.M., Rev. Tom, Rector's office,
[email protected].
Wednesday Evening in Lent, beginning March 8th, 7:00 p.m.
Explore Rohr. Read and discuss how you feel about what Fr.
Richard Rohr has to say about “belonging”, “grace”,
“forgiveness”, “love” and “The Cosmic Christ”. Each week during Lent you will receive a brief e-mail containing one or two of
Fr Richards’s daily devotionals from the recent past. We will
meet after the evening meal in the Parish Hall and discuss what
we have read, what we have learned and how we feel about the
teachings of this modern day mystic. There are no right or
wrong answers and there is no quiz at the end, our purpose is to

Have you ever thought about joining this
powerful ministry? Is God calling you to step out of your comfort zone and answer Jesus’ call to visit the prisoner (Matthew
25:31-46)? It is a big commitment, there is no question about it,
but you get back way more than you give (Luke 6:38).
A team is beginning to form for KAIROS 13 in Sussex II State
Prison. Team members will meet four Saturdays in Williamsburg (8:30am – 3:00pm, March 4th and 18th, April 1st and 8th) and
have a final team meeting in Petersburg late on April 19th. We
will be “inside” April 20th – 23rd.
Kairos is a Greek word meaning “God's Special Time” or “in the
fullness of time,” which means our Participants and Guests have
an opportunity to reconsider their life choices. As hearts are
changed and inmates begin to take responsibility for their actions, it's like having a front-row seat at a miracle. God transforms lives and the world is impacted. Please prayerfully consider this opportunity. Contact any member of the ESC Prison
Ministry community (look for green name tag).

Altar Flowers 2017
Singing. Smiling.
The altar flower 2017 sign up calendar is on the bulletin board.
Suggested donation is $75. A notice will appear in the pew bulletin stating who gave that week's flowers and in whose memory or
thanksgiving they were given. Checks should be made out to ESC
with "altar flowers" in the memo line. For more information contact Audra Bryn, Flower Guild Chair, at 427-6490.
In a prison gymnasium.
Thanks be to God.
One of the routines we follow in KAIROS is the signing of
“Surely the Presence” at the end of every day. (We sing it so often we refer to it as “Shirley”.) We sing it as a team at the end of
each training day, we sing it as a team in the parking lot of the
prison at the close of each day inside and the last thing we do
before we leave the residents and the prison at the close of the
Four Day weekend is sing it as a group in the prison gymnasium.
It’s an amazing time, a time when His presence is felt by all. It is
overwhelming still, after all this time.
Trouble Hearing in Church?
Hearing Loop: You might begin to see signs around the
church that we now have a hearing loop installed in the
church. If you have a hearing aid, ensure that your
audiologist has activated the T-coil and please switch
to it. Personal portable devices can be had by contacting Trish Wilson:
[email protected]. What is a hearing loop? A loop
provides a magnetic wireless signal that is picked up by the hearing aid when it is set to the "t" or telecoil setting. When a hearing
aid user selects the "T" setting, he or she can pick up the sounds
from a PA system microphone instead of the hearing aid's internal
microphone. This results in improved speech understanding because the listener receives a clear signal without any background
noise. Hearing aids with the "t" function can be used in auditoriums, theaters, libraries, worship centers, court rooms or anywhere
a hearing loop system is installed. To read more about the t-coil
system, go to http://tecear.com/Turn-On-To-T-coil.htm.
Musings from SheilaMay
(Parish Book Store Volunteer Extraordinaire )
U.S. clocks spring forward again in Virginia on Sunday, March
12, for daylight saving time, (yes, that is the correct way to say
it) the annual event that stretches the hours of evening sunlight and irritates those who'd rather leave well enough
alone. (That would me - even as a child my body has never adjusted to DST!)
So who's responsible for this controversial clock changing? Ben
Franklin first introduced the basic idea way back in 1784, but he
did so with tongue planted firmly in cheek. French ambassador
Franklin flashed his legendary wit with a letter to the Journal of
Paris in which he claimed to be astonished, upon being awakened at 6 a.m., to find that the sun was already up. He, and no
doubt his readers, had never seen the sun before noon. (Related:
"Daylight Saving Time: 7 Surprising Things You May Not
Know.") “I saw it with my own eyes. And, having repeated this
observation the three following mornings, I found always precisely the same result.” Money would be saved, Franklin argued,
if people rose with the sun and turned in earlier at night, replacing hours of expensive candle use with free morning daylight.
Just as modern daylight saving time has its detractors, Franklin
knew there would be opposition to his idea, and proposed
measures including taxes on window shutters, rationing of candle sales enforced by police guards, a halt to non-emergency
coach traffic after dark, and the firing of cannons in every street
to get “sluggards” with the program. “All the difficulty will be in
the first two or three days,” he reassured readers.
The E-pistle
The E-pistle is our weekly e-mail newsletter for Eastern Shore
Chapel. It is published every Thursday. Photos, Please! The deadline to submit and or contribute information is 12:00 p.m. on

Peanuts Are Perfection!
The Peanut Group is back in action this making those worldfamous peanuts. Each week a large group of committed volunteers gathers to prepare these tasty treats. The proceeds of their
sales helps with various outreach projects around the
church. You can order your peanuts and support this wonderful
ministry! Call the church office today to place your order (4286763).
Was Franklin serious? - “It's easy to say Franklin was just joking, and of course he was spoofing the French for being lazy,”
says Tufts University professor Michael Downing, author
of Spring Forward: The Annual Madness of Daylight Saving Time. “But he
was a big thrift guy. He constantly wrote about conservation
issues, things like the amount of tallow used for candles. He
couldn't stop noticing things that could be done more efficiently
if they were done his way. So I think in the end it wasn't entirely
a joke.”
KAIROS Prison Ministry
E-mail to KAIROS team members 02/17/2017
This morning several of my devotionals referred to Isaiah 65:17.
One of them suggested I draw – or doodle – what I thought a new
heaven and a new earth might look like. I know what it looks like
but I can’t draw it.
It’s “Shirley”.
Yes indeed, it’s “Surely the Presence” sung loudly in a prison gymnasium in a big ole circle. It’s an out-of-round circle of men all
holding hands; hands raised in joy-filled adoration, praising the
Living God and acknowledging His presence. It’s a gathering of
old and young, black, white and brown; the tried and convicted,
This describes how I feel about DST - It’s like cutting the bottom off a blanket and sewing it to the top to make it longer! So
what do you think - for DST or against DST or think we should
choose one and not mess with changing clocks!!
