Writing: Biography & Autobiography
Looking at example texts to identify key
features; plan a biography for oral presentation.
SPAG foci :
Spelling: prefixes ‘ex’
Grammar and punctuation: word class revision,
different types of nouns and expanded noun
phrases. Adverbial phrases.
Week 2
WC 15th Sept
Writing: Biography & Autobiography
Children will follow a modelled text to plan and
write their own biographies.
SPAG foci :
Spelling: soft ‘c’ words’
Grammar and punctuation: using prepositions for
effect.
Week 3
WC 22nd Sept
Writing: Biography & Autobiography
Children will look at example texts for
biographies and autobiographies. Children will
find similarities and differences in key features.
They will plan and write their own autobiography.
SPAG foci :
Spelling: ‘gu’ words
Grammar and punctuation: Phrases and clauses.
Main and subordinate clauses.
Week 4
WC 29th Sept
Writing: Journalistic Writing
Children will identify the key features of
newspaper articles. They will explore language
techniques used for headlines eg play on words
and will recognise devices used to persuade as
well as determine fact from opinion.
SPAG foci :
Spelling: unstressed vowels
Grammar and punctuation: use of bullet points
to list information. Word class revision on verbs.
Using modal verbs or adverbs to indicate degrees
of possibility.
Literacy Year 5
Writing: Recounts
Children will explore different types of recount texts
and identify key features of recounts. They will plan
an informal recount based on an example text.

Recognise the 5 different types of nouns.
Writing: Recounts
Children will plan and write their own recount of a day
in their summer holidays. They will explore the
features of newspaper articles

myths and identify their structure and key features.

Numeracy Year 4
Number & Place Value
Children will be recognising the value of each digit in a
four-digit number (thousands, hundreds, tens, and
ones). They will be learning to count in multiples of 25
and 1000 and to find 1000 more or less than a given
number. They will count backwards through zero to
include negative numbers. They will solve number and
practical problems that involve all of the above.

Number & Place Value
Children will order and compare numbers beyond 1000;
Round any number to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000;
They will add numbers with up to 4 digits using the
formal written methods of columnar addition and solve
addition problems in contexts.

columnar subtraction (including expanded version of
columnar subtraction). They will be learning to
estimate to check answers to a calculation. They will

Writing: Journalistic Writing
Children will research and plan a news story.
They will explore interview techniques and
different types of questions. They will also make
notes and present their news story using ICT.
SPAG foci :
Spelling: double consonants
Grammar and punctuation: use of rhetorical
questions. Use of commas in subordinate and
relative clauses.
Week 6
WC 13th Oct
Writing: Journalistic Writing
Children will plan and write their own newspaper
report.
SPAG foci :
Spelling: ‘er’ words
Grammar and punctuation: developed use of
rhetorical questions. Direct and reported speech.
Week 7
WC 20th Oct
Writing: Myths & Legends
Children will become familiar with one myth and
rewrite by adapting the original story.
Grammar and Punctuation
To search for and classify a range of prepositions.
To use prepositions for effect.
Number & Place Value
Children will subtract numbers with up to 4 digits using
the more formal written methods of columnar
subtraction. They will estimate and use inverse
operations to check answers to a calculation
They will solve addition and subtraction problems in
contexts, deciding which operations and methods to
use and why.

This week’s focus is 6x table
Writing: Myths & Legends
Children will create a plan for their own myth and
develop characters and setting. They will start to
write their draft versions in sections, ie opening, build
up, dilemma, resolution and ending.

Appropriate use of commas.
Commas in a list
Correct use of commas after expanded sentence
starters.
Writing: Poetry (the power of imagery)
Children will explore a range of poems which use
personification and powerful imagery. They will
start to write their own poems using similar
techniques.
Writing: Myths & Legends
Children will edit and improve draft versions to create
a polished version. They will produce a book of Year 5
Viking myths.
SPAG foci :
Spelling: suffixes - ‘ous’ words
Grammar and punctuation: metaphors, similes,
alliteration, personification, onomatopoeia.

Multiplication & Division
Children will recall multiplication and division facts for
multiplication tables up to 12 × 12. They will use place
value, known and derived facts to multiply and divide
mentally, including: multiplying by 0 and 1; dividing by 1.
They will be learning to multiply two-digit and threedigit numbers by a one-digit number using partitioning.
They will solve problems involving multiplying and
adding,
