August 21, 2016, 21st Sunday in OT C THE CHALLENGES OF FAITH INTRODUCTORY THOUGHT Many if not most people believe that the Christian view of salvation means nothing more than going to heaven after death. But Christ lived and died to bring healing and life to this world. The eternal realm is the ultimate home for those who have lived faithfully here below. Salvation includes living for God in this world as well as living with God in the world to come Reading I Isaiah 66:18-21 Salvation means reconciliation. There can be no healing unless we are reconciled to God and reconciled to one another. Heaven will come to earth when men and women from different nations, different races, and different classes learn to live together as one. Reading II Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13 The words “discipleship” and “discipline” come from the same root word. We cannot be disciples of Christ unless we are disciplined by Christ. What, then, are the disciplines that Christ imposes on his followers? Simply this: to bring forth the fruits of peace and justice Reading III Luke 13:22-30 The doorway to salvation is narrow. All are welcome, but only those who receive and practice the disciplines of love are allowed to enter the fold. Salvation in this and in the next world is promised only to those who live by the law of love. Our Lord Christ has shown us the way CLOSING THOUGHT The earthly life would make no sense if it were merely the staging ground for the life to come. God put us on this earth to learn to live here so we will be prepared to live hereafter. If we find nothing of God’s kingdom on this earth, we are not likely to find a home in heaven Mon.Aug 22nd, 8am Isabel Starr @ St. Agnes Tues.Aug. 23rd 8am Darwin Rosenthal @ HolyFamily Wed. Prayer for our Faith Formation Team: Loving Jesus, We are not Scripture Scholars, Theologians, or Church historians. Rather, we are ragged band of your humble disciples. Although we have countless other responsibilities-some of them pretty burdensome- each of us said ‘yes’ to being part of our parish faith formation team. You told your disciples to carry the Good News to the ends of the earth. Well, our “ends of the earth” are right here, right now. Let us find among ourselves and in one another a very special community of faith-so that our simple efforts to preach the Good News of the Kingdom may truly, someday, reach the ends of the earth. Amen Please prayerfully consider how you can give your time and talent to our Faith Formation Team! Thank You!!! If you were wanting to purchase a copy of the book ‘Forming Intentional Disciples’ written by Sherry Weddell, that was mentioned at the Fr. Edwards Retreat, please contact the parish office @ 532-5288. In Her Cherished Heart Women’s Conference - Lessons from Lisa Hendey’s The Grace of Yes: Eight Virtues for Generous Living. Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time – 21 August 2016 Here comes everybody. The entry to the kingdom of God, to heaven is described as passage through a narrow gate. But the path to it is pretty wide. It has to be, because this roadway has room for the nations of every language, sisters and brothers from everywhere. This is our pilgrimage – helping one another on the path to the kingdom, to our final home, to God.
