Prayer Diary

Prayer Diary
September to November 2016
Foreword from Bishop Graham
There is great excitement that the Archbishop of
Canterbury, Justin Welby, will be visiting the Diocese
of Worcester over three days from 7 until 9 October.
Please join me in praying for Archbishop Justin,
together with all of the plans that are being made and
the people involved. Above all, please pray that through
the Archbishop’s talking, listening and actions many
people will be inspired to see Jesus more clearly, to
love Jesus more dearly, and to follow Jesus more nearly.
All of the events and visits for the Archbishop’s visit are focused around the
three priorities that he has set for his ministry.
• prayer and the renewal of religious life
• reconciliation
• evangelism
You may wish to focus your prayers upon these three areas in the coming
weeks. When they intersect we witness God’s reconciling love for each and
every one of us springing forth, bringing joy and delight. I hope you will be
part of that and that Archbishop Justin’s visit will have a lasting impact on
individuals as well as our life together.
September to November 2016
Welcome to the latest edition of the prayer diary, which takes
us through Autumn to the very end of the Church’s year. This quarter
we’re praying for four different deaneries as we move around the Diocese
– Pershore, Droitwich, Bromsgrove and Upton.
We also pray for Bishops around the world using the Anglican Cycle of
Prayer and the Porvoo prayer calendar (www.porvoochurches.org) –
these are included in italics at the bottom of each day.
Do let me know if you’ve got a story to feature on a Sunday in a future
diary – the more notice you can give me the better! And don’t forget that
large print copies of the diary are always available – email me on
[email protected], or contact the Diocesan Office
reception on 01905 20537 if you or someone you know would like one.
Best wishes,
Sam Setchell, Communications Officer

New Peruvian Bishops
In July 2015, three Peruvian
priests were consecrated as
suffragan bishops in the Anglican
Diocese of Peru.
With the
retirement of Bishop Bill Godfrey
in April this year, Jorge Aguilar was
installed to replace him as Bishop
of Peru, marking the first time in
its history that Peru has had an
indigenous diocesan bishop. The
Diocese is now divided into five areas of work, three of which are the responsibility of
the new bishops, and two of which are led by ‘regional vicars’.
In addition to leading the Diocese, Bishop Jorge has particular responsibility for the
Lima area and the coast south to Ica.
Bishop Alejandro Mesco trained at an evangelical seminary prior to ordination as an
Anglican priest. A native Quechua speaker, he has previously worked in Arequipa and
the Colca Canyon, and as suffragan his work will now focus on the Cusco region in the
south-eastern Andes.
Bishop Juan Carlos Revilla was a Roman Catholic seminarian before being ordained
as an Anglican. His ministry has mainly been in Arequipa, where for many years he
was parish priest of Cristo Redentor. His now has responsibility for the Chiclayo and
Cajamarca regions in northern Peru.
Carlos Quispe is the new regional vicar of the Arequipa region, in the south. A former
Roman Catholic priest, he has previously undertaken several roles in Lima and Huancayo.
Misael Varillas takes over as regional vicar of Huancayo, in the central Andes to the east
of Lima. Trained at an evangelical seminary, he has worked in parishes in Lima and Ica.
Please pray for all of the Bishops in Peru as well as for Margaret Rutter, former Mission
Development Officer, who is visiting Peru this September in support of our links.

Celebrating Reader Ministry
Two people will be
admitted to the office
of Reader next Saturday
in the Cathedral. Bishop
John will conduct the
service, licensing the
individuals to minister in
the parishes they have
been called to serve.
Readers are trained and licensed lay ministers in the Church of England, authorised in
particular to exercise a ministry of preaching and teaching. They undergo a two year
training course before being admitted to the role, after which they carry out a wide
range of tasks within their parishes and beyond, especially helping others to reflect on
their faith and how it relates to their daily lives.
Being licensed are:
• Andy Green from St Egwin, Norton and Lenchwick, which is in a combined benefice
with All Saints, Evesham and Chaplain to Evesham and Pershore Hospitals.
• Andy Hewines from Blakedown with Churchill and Broome.
This year’s service will also mark the 150th anniversary of Reader ministry. Existing
Readers will be present to renew their promises alongside the newly licenced and it will
be a celebration of the Ministry of the Word.
Dr Christina Baxter will preach at the service. Dr Baxter is a former lay Chair of General
Synod, the former Principal of St John’s College, Nottingham and is also a Reader
herself. The service will start at 2.30pm in the Cathedral and all are welcome.

Hagley Bell ringing
Richard Scarth has been bell-ringing for the past
ten years and three years ago became Tower
Captain at St John the Baptist in Hagley. The team
of ringers has gone from strength to strength.
“It’s essential to be open and welcoming to
everyone,” says Richard. “I try to ensure that
when people come to try ringing, they have an
enjoyable experience and leave the tower with a
smile on their face!”
There are now up to a dozen people who come to
ring at Hagley on practice nights, ranging in age
from 11 to over 70.
The Church has a Facebook page for the bell
ringers and a hand bell ringing group has
started, with support from the hand bell master
at St John’s Church in Halesowen, John Lashford. “Our hand bells are from the Victorian
era and hadn’t been used much in recent years, so it’s great to see this little community
growing,” says Richard.
Anyone is welcome to Hagley’s bell ringing practice on Wednesday night. The bell tower
holds at least one open day a year, often linked to open days at nearby Hagley Park.
The church also commemorates local and national events with peels and quarter-peels.
“Bell ringing is a real traditional English pastime,” says Richard. “Once you get the hang
of it, it’s great fun and you’ll be welcome in any of the 6000 bell towers worldwide.
There’s often a certain mystique about what goes on in bell towers but there are lots of
reasons to come and have a go and find out more!”
Please pray for Richard and his bell-ringing team at Hagley as well as for all those who
ring bells in churches across the Diocese.

Germinate
On Saturday 15 October, the 2016 Germinate! Conference, “Making
it happen” is taking place, focussing on the challenge of deepening
discipleship in order to inspire, encourage and equip flourishing rural mission. A number of our rural churches in West
Worcestershire have been working together
in Germinate learning communities. These
‘communities’ are made up of around 35
people from across the parishes (including the
incumbents) who have committed to meeting
together for two days every six months over
two years, to share experiences and ideas
and come away with a plan of action for
each benefice. The learning communities are
currently half way through the process.
Anne Lewis, member of St John the Baptist Church in Suckley, said: The Germinate
learning Community has provided a stimulating and enjoyable forum to share ideas. We
have discovered new ways to identify the resources we have in the 14 churches in the
Worcestershire West Rural Team and looked at how they can best be used to enable us
to work together, despite being such a widespread rural group of churches looked after
by only two stipendiary priests.
“It has inspired us to realise that working together we can face the future stronger
and has given us the boldness to take responsibilities that we have previously have
assumed would just be taken by those wearing the dog collar.
“As Kingdom People we are, each one of us in our own way, now needing to accept
Christ’s commission to go in to the world and make disciples. It really is up to US.”
Please pray for all those involved in the Germinate learning communities and for those
attending the conference next weekend.

Youth Support services celebrates 30 years
YSS is an independent charity which is very proud to be celebrating
30 years of providing mainly community based support services for
people who are often vulnerable, have complex needs and who
face difficult life challenges. Those supported include young carers
(aged 7 -24), young people in custody (aged 10 -17) and adults
coming out of prison.
YSS started in 1986 as a multi-agency project called ISS (Intensive
Support Scheme) hosted under the umbrella of the Worcester
Diocesan Board for Social Responsibility with a management board consisting of Social
Services, Youth Services, Education, Probation, Police and local Magistrates. The name
changed to YSS in 1994 and in 2000 YSS was registered as an independent charity
and company limited by guarantee. They now reach over 2000 people a year across
West Mercia & Warwickshire and have 50 staff and over 150 volunteers.
YSS is often described as being ‘the glue’ between people at risk of being socially
isolated and wider mainstream society by delivering support services that are focused

Every month, St Martin’s Church, London Road in Worcester hosts a very special concert.
Tiny Tunes is a joint venture between The Elgar School of Music and St Martin’s Church.
The idea is to provide a relaxed, baby-friendly environment for parents and carers with
babies and very young children, where they can all enjoy a varied selection of lovely
and lively music, performed by professional musicians. After the concerts, coffee and
home-made cakes are available.
Church member, Shirley Scott said: “The atmosphere was buzzing at the launch concert
of Tiny Tunes at St Martin’s last May. We had no idea how many to expect, and we were
delighted to welcome 45 adults and 43 tinies, most of whom sat quietly for much of the
time, listening to the animal-themed programme of music for cello and piano, played
by Corinne Frost and Janine Parsons. There were some cuddly animals available, and
a few small instruments for the toddlers to have a go at playing themselves.”
The concerts are held in St Martin’s at 10.30am on the 4th Monday in the month
(except December). Please pray for those involved in organising the Tiny Tunes concerts and for all those
who attend.

All Saints’ Day Sunday 30 OCTOBER
Living Wage Week
Sunday 30 October - Saturday 4 November is ‘Living Wage Week’
The Diocesan Board of Finance and Worcester
Cathedral are members of the Living Wage
Foundation and parishes are encouraged by
Diocesan Synod to pay the Living Wage to their
employees.
The Living Wage predates the National Living
Wage (which was implemented from April this
year and at £7.20 an hour for those who are
25 and over is a legal requirement replacing the
national minimum wage) and is set at £8.25
outside London. This reflects what is required,
based on careful research, to have a modest but
reasonable standard of living. The rate for the coming year will be announced during
Living Wage Week. Over 2,500 employers, including a third of FTSE 100 companies
have voluntarily signed up to the Living Wage.
There are many benefits: staff are more highly motivated and productive with less staff
turnover because they feel valued, which can balance out the extra cost. Some of
these may be obscured by difficulties for some employers with the statutory National
Living Wage. The speed of implementation and above inflation increases in coming
years make it difficult to adapt. Some employers have cut other benefits or reduced
staff. Some fear they may go out of business. Retailing, hospitality, social care and
horticulture in and around the Vale of Evesham that have low business margins and
employ large numbers of lower paid workers are particularly affected.
Pray for employees that struggle to get by on low pay (and sometimes uncertain hours),
for employers that fear their businesses will find it hard to adapt and for a fair deal for all.

Feckenham World War 1 concerts
Two special concerts will be held at John the Baptist Church in
Feckenham on 11 & 12 November at 7.30pm. ‘A Suite for the Fallen
Soldier’ has been specially written by Phil Mountford as a response
to the Great War in words and music and includes a narrative by
Kathy Gee, a poet who lives in the village, based on real letters written by serving
Worcestershire soldiers at the time.
Composer Phil says: I started with the idea of relating a global issue on a local scale.
Looking at The First World War, I wanted to explore the power of the personal and
research the process of commemoration locally. I hope I have connected the place
and people of today with the place and people from 100 years ago. Connecting
this generation with a previous one, sharing stories and preserving them for future
generations.”
The concerts are a part of the village’s commemoration of the role played by local
soldiers in World War 1. A walking tour has also been put together around Feckenham,
telling the stories of 12 of the 24 soldiers whose names are recorded on the village
war memorial.

Remembrance
Sunday
Sunday 13 NOVEMBER
Remembrance Sunday
This year marks 100 years since the
battle of the Somme.
Earlier in the year, Worcester Cathedral
marked the opening day of the battle
and today it will be marked as part of the
Remembrance Day commemorations.
Canon Georgina Byrne explains why it’s
important to remember:
“The Battle of the Somme began on 1 July 1916 and ended on 19 November, the
same year as winter closed in. In the space of 141 days over a million soldiers from
Britain, the British Empire, France and the German Empire were dead or wounded. The
British and French had taken seven miles of German territory.
“Apart from the sheer loss of life on both sides, the Battle of Somme remains significant
in British history because of the involvement of volunteer recruits who took part
alongside the regular army. These were enthusiastic, fit young men, drawn to fight for
their country and recruited by Lord Kitchener. Many of these men came from the same
towns and villages, or from the same factories, and had joined up in ‘Pals’ battalions’,
with no experience of warfare.
“We can no longer ‘remember’ the Battle of the Somme: there is no one living who
does remember it. Instead we commemorate – and it is important that we do so. We
come together in prayer to acknowledge the horrors of war, the loss of a generation,
the grief that still resonates a hundred years later, and to reaffirm our determination
to work for peace.”
The Cathedral will mark Remembrance Sunday in the 10am service, with an act of
remembrance at the county war memorial outside the cathedral at 10.55 am.
Pray for all those who continue to be affected by war.

Christ the King Sunday 20 NOVEMBER
A link with Morogoro
Over the past two years St Mary’s Kempsey and St Denys’, Severn Stoke, have been
developing a friendship link with Chamwino parish in Morogoro. Vicar of Kempsey, Mark
Badger, tells us about the partnership:
Chamwino Parish has four congregations, St Paul’s Church, Chamwino and St Stephen’s
Church, Mafiga and two smaller congregations at St Peter’s Church, Kasanga and St
Philip’s, Mafulu. Lead by the Revd Capt Enock Chibada, the parish is engaged in a great
deal of community and missionary activity. St Paul’s is engaged in the building of a
new nursery and primary school and Kempsey Church and Worcester Rotary Club were
delighted to sponsor the building and equipping of the first classroom.
The increasing number of those engaging with the Church has facilitated the growth
in community education programmes in areas such as health and environmental
protection. The congregations are striving to provide better church and community
facilities across the parish with new churches in Mafiga & Kasanga and another new
school at Mafulu.
In late 2015 two members of our congregation vistied Morogoro and received a
wonderfully warm welcome from Enock and the people of Chamwino parish. In June
we welcomed Enock to Kempsey and he took part in both the Ordination Service in the
Cathedral and Philippa Sargent’s first celebration of the Eucharist at St Mary’s Kempsey!
