KEY TO SUGGESTED PAINTING VENUES The numbers on this list correspond to blue numbered locations on the Callaway Plein Air painting venue map and are arranged according to the day we will visit. Each day focuses on specific sites, however you are welcome to explore additional areas within Callaway County that are not on this map or return to previous sites. If you visit a privately owned property not on this list please get permission to paint on that property. This list and map are only to guide your exploration of Callaway County and to assist with the locations of Plein Air events. On Saturday, we will focus on the interiors & non-landscape sites, however theses sites are also available at anytime throughout the weekend. * Denotes the location of featured events: Brian Mahieu’s painting demonstration, Quick Paint, Paint the Town, and Non-Landscape on Site. 1. Fulton Art House 531 Court Street, Fulton, MO Thursday, May 26 (Highlight in Violet) 2. Highway 94 and the Missouri River Valley. The river road in Southern Callaway County, from Jefferson City in the West to Portland in the East. There are several charming river towns of Mokane, Steedman, and Portland with river access areas along the way. 3. Katy Trail State Park http://www.bikekatytrail.com/ http://callaway.dbrl.org/community/callaway-county-outdoors CPA artists have special permission to paint on the trail during this event, do not block the trail, enter public property or litter. Drive along Highway 94 and turn north on any County Road. You can easily park along the county road and hike a little way onto the trail for beautiful views of the river valley or the river hills. 4. Portland River Access Just off of Highway 94 27. Hams Prairie Access County Road 428 7. Mokane Bar & Grill (Dinner at 4:30 pm) Mokane Bar & Grill (206 Fulton Ave, Mokane, MO). We will gather here for dinner prior to the painting demonstration. • The Katy Trail is nearby. Restrooms are available at the Katy Trail trailhead. 8. * Mokane River Access (Brain Mahieu’s demonstration at 6 pm) County Road 479 The Mokane River Access is a serene camping area with river access. This is the location of Brian Mahieu’s painting demonstration, “A Tonalist Approach to Sunset”. • When parking please do not block the boat dock. • No restroom is located at this site Friday, May 27 (Highlight in Orange) 9. * Carrington Pits (Quick Paint check in at 9 AM) Take Highway H west three miles then turn right onto County Road 315 and then approximately one mile to County Road 317 (entrance). There is a small sign that marks the entrance. County Road 317 is a dead end with a large picnic area with the lake on the right. Carrington Pits are part of the Mark Twain National Forest and provide access to trails, forest, and waterways. This institution is operated under special use permit with the Mark Twain National Forest. If possible please carpool. 10. Prairie Garden Trust (PGT) 8945 County Road 431, New Bloomfield, MO 65063 phone: 573- 295- 6349 Take Highway 54 South and turn left onto BB. Follow BB 1.9 miles and then turn right onto County Road 430. Follow about .6 miles then turn left on County Road 431. PGT will be 15 to 20 minutes from Carrington Pits. http://prairiegardentrust.org/ The Prairie Garden Trust, or PGT, offers trails through woods and prairie, along ponds and streams to see the ever-changing plants and the birds, butterflies, mammals and more that live here. It is called a nature garden because it has the beauty of native plants without the messiness of nature untended. Please do not paint on the new concrete trails, only paint on the grass. No need to call ahead during the event. 11. Mark Twain National Forest Trail maps available from the Cedar Creek Ranger District 573-592-1400. Saturday, May 28 *Paint the Town (Highlight in Blue) 12. Historic Brick District & Farmer’s Market Farmer’s market is located on Fifth Street in front of Courthouse. 9 am – Noon The Downtown Fulton Historic District was listed on the National Historic Places in 2004. This area features a couple of M.F. Bell’s earliest works, brick streets, and various businesses 13. Memorial Park and Splash Pad Intersection of Court and 2nd Streets. Turn right once you reach this intersection and parking will be on the left. Memorial Park has multiple areas to paint including: a newly constructed children’s Splash Pad (open’s at 11 am), a wooden covered bridge, and gazebos. With a short walk from this site you can also enjoy Stinson Creek Trail. • Parking and Restroom available 14. Historic Fifth Street (* location for non- landscape on site) Historic Fifth Street in Fulton, MO features multiple M.F. Bell homes. At the intersection of Fifth Street and Nichols Street you will find the * Post Office Bar and Grill, which is a good place to rest, eat, and paint. If you choose to paint at the Post Office Bar and Grill you will need to purchase food and drink while you paint. 15. Historic Court Street (*locations for non- landscape on site) Court Street, Fulton, MO begins at Tenth Street and ends in the Historic Brick District. This area features tree lined streets with beautiful historic homes. In the business portion of Court Street you will find many restaurants and antique shops. Restaurants include * Beks and * Playhouse Bistro. 16. Historic Seventh Street Seventh Street, Fulton MO connects the Historic Brick District with the National Churchill Museum. This street is also home to historic architecture. 17. Karen Mertens' Garden 710 West 7th Street, Fulton MO 65251 Fulton Garden Club garden. 30+ acres is located at the first gravel drive to the left after you have passed Hollyhock Street on the right coming from town and continuing past Westminster College on Seventh St. There are designated garden areas as well as wooded areas and clay pits. Inside these gardens are two brick patios, a small lily pond with a rock patio, antique wrought iron fencing, and ornamental statues in the garden. Along with the colorful sun gardens and shade gardens are a variety of trees including: Southern Grandiflora Magnolia trees, dogwoods, redbuds, purple or red robe locust, crooked willows, gingko, Japanese maple, pines, and all the native trees that appear on their own like oak, walnut, hickory, etc. Karen has stated that she will allow artists to use the restrooms in her home when she is there. On Friday the driveway needs to remain clear for a truck to come up through so park on the grass on the south side of driveway where the wire cage with hanging baskets in it. 18. St. Mary Aldermanbury 501 Westminster Ave., Fulton MO www.nationalchurchillmuseum.org/church-of-st-mary-history.html The oldest building in the United States moved over from England and reconstructed stone-by-stone. St. Mary Aldermanbury was a church in the City of London first mentioned in 1181 and destroyed by the Great Fire of London in 1666. Rebuilt in Portland stone by Christopher Wren, it was again gutted by the Blitz in 1940, leaving only the walls standing. In 1966 the stones were transported to Fulton, Missouri, by the residents of that town, and rebuilt in the grounds of Westminster College as a memorial to Winston Churchill. Churchill had made his Sinews of Peace, "Iron Curtain" speech in the Westminster College Gymnasium in 1946. 19. Chruchill Museum: Berlin Wall and “Breakthrough”, Westminster College 501 Westminster Ave., Fulton, MO https://www.nationalchurchillmuseum.org/berlin-wall-history.html Mrs. Sandys, granddaughter of Winston Churchill, created the sculpture from sections of the infamous Berlin Wall. The sculpture stands to the west of church St. Mary the Virgin Aldermanbury on the campus of Westminster College. 20. Morningside Park & Lake Travel east on E. 10th St. past the Fulton Country Club. East 10th St. will turn to Bartley Lane. Then turn right on W. Morningside Dr. The Morningside Park and parking will be on the left. 52 acres consisting of a 7 acre fishing lake, picnic tables, and access to the Stinson Creek Trailhead. Here you will find beautiful mix of trees, grassland, and water all within the city limits of Fulton. • Restroom and parking available 21. It is easily accessible by many access points around the city. Take a rest under the bluffs of Lover's Leap and cross over unique landmarks such as a scenic covered bridge and a 129 year-old iron railroad bridge. 22. William Woods University 1 University Ave., Fulton, MO https://www.williamwoods.edu/ Beautiful campus grounds with lake and arched stone bridge over lake. WWU first started over 140 years ago as an orphaned girls school then moved to Fulton MO and took on the name of William Woods College in 1900 after it's benefactor Dr. William Stone Woods. It officially became a women's college in 1914. In 1992 turned co-ed and became William Woods University. 23. Ann Wakeman Gardens 5798 Windy Meadows Ln., Fulton, MO 12 acres of native wildflower meadow and prairie grass gardens planted 25 years ago. There is also a small open woodland area. They are located approximately 1 1/2 miles from Highway 54 on Route F. From Fulton take Route F and then turn onto Windy Meadows Lane. From Columbia on Route F, go approximately 1 mile past KK junction then turn onto Windy Meadows Lane. Windy Meadows Lane is a dead end road and their property is about 1/2 mile from F. There is parking in the driveway up by the house and across the creek. • Closest restrooms are at the service station at the intersection of F and Hwy 54. 24. * Auto World Museum (non-landscape, interior) 200 Peacock Dr., Fulton, MO The Auto World Museum was started by William E. Backer, former owner of Backer Potato Chip Company. His love of old cars, country roads, and two lane highways was the impetus for the building of Auto World Museum. For more information on the history of the museum or the cars please visit: https://www.autoworldmuseum.com/about.html Auto World Museum is offering free admission for all artists and a reduced admission of $5 for non-artists. •Restroom available 25. * Thirsty Hog Saloon (non- landscape or sunset) 7125 County Road 407 Fulton, MO The Thirsty Hog Saloon is a good place to end the day with a bite to eat and the opportunity to paint a sunset, non-landscape, interior, or figure. Sunday, May 29 (Highlight in Red) Possible sunrise painting sites – return to any of the above sites or try a new location in other parts of Callaway. 26. Callaway Fields 9731 Falcon Drive, Auxvasse. Phone: 573-386-2329 From Fulton: Drive north on Highway 54. Once you reach Auxvasse turn right (west) onto Route B.
