LETTER FROM YOUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear friends,
Before your calendars get any more crowded, I want to make you aware of some important
dates that may be of interest.




Nominations for the Industry Awards are due by Nov. 20. For the first time, these
awards will be presented during a general session at the Oregon Wine Symposium,
Feb. 23-24. See the Oregon Wine Symposium for details on the award
categories and the nomination form, which is available in English and Spanish.
The deadline to submit experimental wine trials for the tasting at the Symposium is
Nov. 20. This new tasting at the Symposium is a great way to showcase
innovations in the vineyard and the cellar.
Complete this form to submit your tasting room information by Dec. 15 for a free
listing in the 2016 Oregon Wine Country Touring Guide, which will be available
spring 2016.
Join OWB on Dec. 17 for Media Relations 101, a free webinar on the keys to
working effectively with the media. Learn how the landscape has changed, best
practices for engaging with media and strategies for earning media coverage.
I also want to alert you to an important compliance reminder from the Oregon
Winegrowers Association and its legal counsel, Davis Wright Tremaine. A notification was
sent to OWA members regarding enforcement actions on direct shipments in Michigan and
Arizona. It is also being sent to non-members as an industry service by OWA. All wineries
will want to review the notification as they prepare to process holiday orders.
Finally, if you had not heard this great news, a couple of your industry colleagues have
earned special recognition:


Dai Crisp of Lumos Wine Co. was inducted into the OSU College of
Agricultural Sciences Hall of Fame. Dai and PK McCoy started their company in
2000. Dai is well known for his exceptional depth of vineyard knowledge and for
successfully representing our industry in pursuit of funding supporting viticulture
research. Dai joins 2013 inductee David Adelsheim.
Dick Shea of Shea Vineyard in Yamhill-Carlton was just named one of the 20 Most
Admired Grapegrowers in North America by Vineyard and Winery
Management. Dick and Deirdre Shea own one of the country's most iconic
vineyards and have worked closely with a number of winemakers to create some of
Oregon's most memorable wines. Dick will be a featured panelist at the Oregon
Wine Symposium offering his perspective on how growers can differentiate
themselves and add value for their customers.
Congratulations Dai and Dick!
Cheers,
Tom Danowski
Executive Director
OREGON WINE SYMPOSIUM
Nominations Open for Oregon Wine Industry Awards
Each year at the Oregon Wine Symposium, industry leaders are presented awards for their
contributions to the Oregon wine industry. Based on industry input OWB has created a
new award, the Vineyard Excellence Award. Description of all the award categories can be
found on the nomination form, which is also available in Spanish.
Nominations are due to the OWB by Nov. 20. Forms can be sent to OWB education
manager Carrie Hardison.
Deadline for Experimental Wine Tasting Submissions is Nov. 20
The Experimental Wine Tasting program at the Oregon Wine Symposium will be an
interactive forum for you to share your experiments and learn from industry colleagues. To
participate in the tasting:

lot (two cases total)
Anyone submitting a trial must be present during the tasting in order to share
information about the trial and process (one complimentary Symposium ticket will
be included)
Submit this form by Nov. 20. Please include a sentence or two describing the trial
Submissions will be reviewed by the committee in December. All vintages and varieties will
be considered, although not all experiments will be chosen. For information or questions

Statewide Crop Load Project: Impacts of Pinot Noir Yield Management
on Vine Productivity and Fruit Composition at Harvest
Join Dr. Patty Skinkis at 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 11 for a presentation on findings from the first
three years of the Statewide Crop Load Project. The Statewide Crop Load Project was
established in 2012 as a large grower collaborative study to determine the long-term
impacts of yield management on fruit composition, wine quality and vine productivity of
Pinot noir. A total of 14 businesses have joined the project and implemented the
experiment across 15 commercial vineyards spanning five AVAs within the Willamette
Valley. Each collaborator implemented two or more yield levels on-site by cluster thinning
at lag phase each year. Basic vine growth parameters were recorded and fruit was produced
into wine for sensory analysis. View the presentation and participate live here.

RESEARCH
Brown Marmorated Stink Bug Parasitoid Discovered
Researchers in Washington state discovered a parasitic wasp that preys upon the invasive
brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB). The wasp Trissolcus japonicus was discovered in the
wild in the United States but is native to regions of Asia where BMSB originated. It is
known to kill the eggs of BMSB and possibly other invasive stink bug species. To read
more, click here.

The Impact of Research on the Oregon Wine Industry – An Update from
Bill Boggess, Executive Associate Dean at Oregon State University
Oregon wine has become a signature state product, earning international recognition and
fueling the economy. Oregon’s emergence on the world stage as a premium wine producer
in a little more than 50 years is truly remarkable. From day one, their efforts have been
informed by research and information from both public and private research programs
including those at Oregon State University. The industry wouldn’t be where it is today if
not for this ongoing partnership. Read Bill Boggess' update in its entirety here.
CALLS FOR WINE

Paul Gregutt is writing a weekly news roundup for Wine Enthusiast online. The column is

Oregon wineries will be considered for inclusion in the column, but items like winemaker

contact Paul Gregutt.
