Navigating College Websites
In April the Guidance Department hosted a Junior College Planning Night. The evening covered a
variety of college and career planning topics for students and their parents. One of these topics
included information on how to navigate a college website. To view the presentation click HERE.
With the advent of the world wide web, there is an overabundance of information just waiting to be
discovered with a few clicks on your keyboard and a simple navigation of your mouse. Simple right? It
is, until you land on the main page of the college you are investigating and wonder? ..where to next?
Staring at a college website is overwhelming, making it difficult to know where to begin. So, let?s break
it down. I?m going to use my alma mater, Franklin Pierce University, as my example. Go ahead and
log onto www.franklinpierce.edu to follow along.
Let?s start with the About tab. This tab is located at the top of your screen. Although you do not need
to start your college search with learning about any college or university, it is a good place to begin.
This tab generally provides the history of the college, information on the college president, board of
trustees, and the overall philosophy of the college. If after reading this information, you decide this
may not be the best fit for you, be sure to move on to the next college on your list. But, for the purpose
of this review, let?s move to the Academic Page.
You may love what your college of choice stands for, but if they do not offer your intended major or
majors, why apply? To learn whether or not your college has the major you want, click on Academics.
It is next to the About Tab. Once here, look at the listing for undergraduate majors. You are an
undergraduate because you have not yet earned a college degree. Let?s say you are interested in Media
and TV Production. You are in luck, not only does Pierce offer this major, it happens to be one of their
largest and strongest majors. Go ahead and click on the major title. If you do, it will lead you to an
overall summary of the program.
Ready to continue? How do you apply to this college? That is where the admissions office comes in.
College Admissions is the gateway to any college / university. It is through this office that you will
learn about the application process. As a future high school graduate, you are considered an
undergraduate. When you click on the Admissions page, be sure to note that you are following the
directions for undergraduate admissions. Let?s check out what Pierce requires all students to do:
On the apply to Franklin Pierce page you will see a couple of different categories. Click
undergraduate and you will find the directions on how to apply to Franklin Pierce. If you scroll down
on your screen, you will see that you can apply to Pierce uses three different methods - apply online,
through paper and pencil, or by using the Common Application. There i s no right or wrong way to
apply, but utilizing the electronic application, whether it is the school or the common application, is
generally the preferred method.
In addition to the college application, make note of the other requirements: official high school
transcripts, letters of recommendation, and essay. At Pierce, SAT / ACT scores are optional. If you click
on the link that says Admission Criteria, you will find important information on deadlines, high
school course preparation, and the assigned essay topic, amongst other items.
Admissions also provides general information on the college such as majors / minors offered, how
many students are generally accepted and of those, how many generally attend and remain for four
years. Admissions representatives also provides information on tuition and can provide general
information on how much financial aid is provided each year. However, to understand the Financial
Aid process and to learn more specifics about what the college has to offer, your next stop is you
guessed it, the Financial Aid tab.
Be on the lookout here. Some colleges will list Financial Aid as a separate tab which you can find from
the home page. Others will nestle this critical information under the Admissions umbrella. This is
what Pierce does. You can access the Financial Aid page through the Admissions site. If you are on the
Application Process page for undergraduates, you will see a link for Financial Aid at the top of the
page. Find it?Good. Click on that.
When considering what colleges you wish to apply to, in addition to major, size, and location of the
college, it is important to consider the overall cost. As an undergraduate student at Franklin Pierce,
you want to look at the Rindge Campus. So, go ahead and click. Now, you should see a breakdown of
the total tuition and fees. From there, go to the hyperlink that states: Learn More About Financial Aid.
With me?On this page, you will see all kinds of tidbits on what Pierce does to assist families pay for
college.
This is true for any college. It is on the financial aid web-page that you will learn about the kinds of aid
offered through the form of loans and grants, information on the FAFSA (Free Application for
Federal Student Aid), if the CSSProfile is required (this is similar to the FAFSA, but is not required of
all colleges), and what kinds of scholarships does the institution offer. There is a plethora of
information on this site. Review it carefully and write down any questions that you have so you may
contact a financial aid officer directly. Be sure to note any deadlines indicated for the submission of
both the FAFSA (and CSSif required) as well as for scholarships.
After you review the financial aid page, feel free to review any of the previous pages or explore other
areas on the site. A good place to start is Student Life, where activities and housing information is
generally contained. Also check out athletics if you are interested in playing a sport or want to be a
spectator!
Now, you are on your way! Feel free to stick around Pierce?s site if you choose or move onto a college /
university of your own choosing. Please note that every college website you visit will be slightly
different, but the information mentioned above can be found on the named pages.
Happy Searching!
Congratulations to the Class of 2017! We wish you the very best as you enter this next exciting
and new part of your lif e! To all of our returning students, we wish you a saf e, happy, and
healthy summer. See you in September!
