RHIANNON, vocal artist with a vision of music as a vehicle for innovation, healing,
transformation, and social change. From her stellar collaborations with the all-women’s
jazz ensemble Alive! to a cappella ensemble SoVoSo’ to Bobby McFerrin and
Voicestra, Rhiannon has paved a unique path as an independent artist. In recent years
she has continued to refine her improvisation work by performing in the a cappella trio
WeBe3 with Joey Blake and David Worm, both 25-year members of Voicestra.
Rhiannon has worked with renowned instrumentalists Abraham Laboriel, Alex Acuna,
Otmaro Ruiz and Jetro Da Silva in an ensemble known as Spontaneous. Both groups
have toured internationally, giving completely improvised performances. Rhiannon’s
new book about her life and teaching methods, Vocal River, The Skill and Spirit of
Improvisation was published in 2013. The powerful body-based vocal improvisation and
sound healing process that Rhiannon teaches internationally includes a year-long
training called All The Way In. Rhiannon lives and works the rest of the year on her farm
on the Big Island of Hawai’i, "cultivating the arts through farming".

ANITA DAUNLE teaches traditional African songs forming a lynchpin between jazz, the
Western European and the African world. By acquiring a greater perception of
traditional songs, this cross-effect mages people become aware of themselves and to
achieve a better listen quality. The work consists of proving this universe of music and
projecting song techniques seldom or never known in western Academies of Music
and by adapting such workplaces to place them within reach of everyone. Daulne
taught among many schools at: UCE University di Birmingham, San Diego University,
Conservatory of Copenhagen.
Together with her sister she founded the Zap Mama band. Both Anita and Marie
Daulne trace their cultural origins both to Congo and to Belgium. Anita is both teacher
and leader of the musical band of Congo Nabindibo. For some time they have been
exploring this world of sounds to extract specific lessons, in particular the essentials to
practice voices throughout the world. This has come about through considerable work,
now recognized internationally, with Zap Mama being nominated for the US Grammy
Awards. For a number of years they worked on the musical development of traditional
songs taking to evidence the contribution they have made to our western world and
as a complement to modern European and American music. Acquiring a greater
knowledge of traditional songs gives to the singer the sensation to embrace, thanks to
the listening and the singing, the entire world. www.anitadaulne.be.
OSKAR BOLDRE is a self-taught musician and singer and was introduced really young to
music as guitarist / singer in groups of progressive rock, in the "cellars" in Milan (ITA)
since 1983. Then he moved on to free folk, and also Afro jazz as a singer-percussionist,
bass player and composer. After a 5-year period of "retreat" (in a mountain farm in
Tuscany, ITA), where he discovered the power of the voice and the body's
polyrhythms, he devoted himself to study overtone singing with Bernard Jaeger CH / D.
Since 1997 he is the director of the polyphonic choirs "Goccia di voci" (ethnic
repertoire, second prize in National Aarau contest in 2013), and the vocal ensemble
“Ancore d'aria” (original repertoire, pioneer in the "a cappella" European scenery). He
teaches vocal improvisation in Italy, Switzerland and Germany since 2000 and has
written a method: "Giocando la voce". Since 2004 he is the artistic director of the
international festival Voci Audaci in Locarno CH. Many collaborations as vocalist with:
Ivo Antognini CH, Francesco Forges ITA, ITA Albert Hera, Alex Cristilli ITA, Anna Oxa ITA,
ITA Simone Mauri, Thomas Achermann CH. He propones also his solo concert "Voce
danzante con respiro". www.oskarboldre.com www.giocandolavoce.ch

RHIANNON: the mystery and method of improvisation
3 classes for intermediate and advancedmax 15 people
Rhiannon has built her process for teaching vocal improvisation on the idea that we must be solid in musical skills, develop
intuition and be available to the mystery and grace that exist when creating music spontaneously. Believing that
improvisation belongs in personal creativity as well as performance, she has developed a process to make improvisation an
essential piece of a singer's training. These exercises unfold in a carefully articulated progression. Working in circle, students
first improvise melody, harmony, rhythm, counterpoint and interlocking parts in solo and small ensemble games. Then in
1
learning to improvise as an ensemble, with exercises using the natural connection of body and voice, you learn to reveal a
vulnerable, authentic sound. You also practice using language, both invented and in your native tongue, sung and spoken,
as part of your musical repertoire. Many of these games become strong performance pieces and teach you how to invent
a group sound without a leader. Learning to improvise as an ensemble with shared responsibility and power teaches deep
listening, generosity, courage and musical awareness.
* Participants can express preferences of class schedules, the artistic direction will compose the groups, avoiding coincidences with other chosen courses
ANITA AFRO SONGS, with Anita Daulne
max 30 people
Learning some of the traditional polyphonic songs from Africa singing in a circle, trough call and response, moving in a choir
form, with polyphonic singing and space for improvising. The interplay between soloist and chorus causes each member to
become both an essential part and a complement to the polyphonic whole a recognition of traditional values certainly
replies to an essential need, an eagerness to extend one's horizons and the riches within one.
ANITA AFRO IMPRO, with Anita Daulne
max 20 people
The techniques of improvisation of some foreign traditional cultures are faced to jazz and European musical structures; this
way of mixing foreign and known brings to a better introspection and listening quality. Singing techniques who are barely
known by the academic world are able to reach anyone understanding and to break barriers of knowledge. These song
techniques stimulate, translate and exult the emotions. They force one to listen and strengthen and bind the links of a
group. We are aware today that in many fields we are returning to some forgotten values, not in order to reject what
already exists, but to complement it.
OSKAR CIRCLE: Leading Circlesongs-art & technique, with Oskar Boldre
max 20 people
The class is addressed to those people who want to know better the art of leading circlesongs and who already know what
is all about. Goal of the workshop is allowing people to handle with the different techniques and fundamental rules in order
to create high quality vocal orchestras. Circlesong: this term has been created by Bobby McFerrin and describes the
moment where a choir, divided in sections, sing by replaying the music the leader propose and teach. Voice is used as an
instrument; the body movement and breath help the learning of the parts. This form of choral improvising is very close to the
way ethnic groups always handed music.
30th of June, Friday (9.00 pm), La Fabbrica
Mega Circlesongs
open to the public
led by Rhiannon, Anita Daulne and Oskar Boldre
Concert, in which the artists solo or in group improvise, leading participants in a collective choral music, that becomes like
