What a Volcanologist does is study volcanoes. Various things a Volcanologist does depends on your degree and what you are chosen to do. If you want to work by yourself you need to have a PhD or a Masters degree. If you chose to work as an assistant you can go with a Bachelors Degree. The difference between working by yourself and being an assistant is the pay. You have a choice of working 24 hours if you want. Volcanology is the most dangerous job in the world you get up close and personal with lava and volcanoes. The point of the job is actually to warn people if a volcano is going to erupt or not. Volcanologists don’t study earthquakes but they play a big part in volcanoes. If a tectonic plate moves under a volcano it can totally change how the volcano acts. It can make the volcano erupt abruptly or unexpectedly. Easter By Steve Bautista and KC Clough People in Computers Class! Beau Glynn Sara Weinke Maranda Drake Levi Thieme Michael Van Pelt Riley Lankford Chris Weinke Issac Rigby Abby Rigby Marrisa Sutherland Steve Bautista Anthony Moore KC Watson Editor, Dorian Watson Mrs. King TA, Jessica Harp Easter Sunday is a happy day for Christians because they believe that this is the day that Jesus Christ rose from the dead after his death. They believe that death is not the end of everything. There are many customs associated with Easter which involve eggs. For this reason, Easter used to be known as Egg Sunday. For the last 200 years in Britain the custom of giving children chocolate eggs has been popular, while in Europe and America, parents hide chocolate eggs in the garden for the children to find. In many countries, children are given hard boiled eggs; it’s a custom for children to decorate these by painting or dying them. Eggs were always thought to be special even before Jesus was born. It is because they are associated with new life when the chick breaks from the egg. After Jesus had risen from the dead, it was easy to think of eggs as a sign of new life. So eggs have always been a part of the celebration of Easter. The Easter Bunny we know today originates in Germany; it was a tradition for Christians dating back, all the way to the 1500s. Children believed that a magic bunny would come by at night and leave them a basket full of colored eggs at Easter-time if they were well behaved. So it was almost like motivation for the kids to behave. And then later on Pennsylvania Dutch settlers brought these great traditions to America in the 1700s. The Winchester House by Sara and Chris At the séance, the medium told her that the she was to sell her property in New Haven and move towards the setting sun, or west. She would be guided by her husband and when she found her new home she would recognize it. “You must start a new life,” said the medium, “and build a home for yourself and for the spirits that have fallen from this terrible weapon too. You can never stop building the house. If you keep building you will live, if you stop you will die.” Shortly after, Sarah sold her home and moved to California. She didn’t stop till she reached Santa Clara Valley in 1884. There she bought a six room home that was still under construction. She had to convince the owner to sell his house and the 162 acres along with it. She discarded the previous plans for the home and started building anything she wished. She chose local workers and craftsmen, for the next 36 years they would be building, rebuilding, altering, changing, constructing, and demolishing one part of the Winchester home after another. She kept her 22 carpenters at work year round, 24 hours each day. Their hammers and saws could be heard at all hours of the night. Her plans were often chaotic. If something didn’t work they would just build a room over the existing one. The house was quickly growing and expanding, Sarah claimed to have no master plan for the estate. Sarah liked using the number “13” while building. Nearly all the building had 13 panes of glass, and staircases with 13 steps, except for one with 42 steps. By 1906, the house reached 7 stories tall. It had chimneys all over the place most served no purpose, 25 rooms, and two mirrors because Sarah believed ghosts were afraid of their own reflection. (continued on page 3) Volume 5, Issue 6 Page 3 The Winchester House Continued After one of Sarah’s séances on night she went up to her bedroom to sleep and never awoke the following day. She died at the age of 83. She left all of her possessions to her niece, Frances Marriot, who had been handling Sarah’s affairs for some time. It was said that Sarah had hidden a safe containing a fortune in jewelry and a solid-gold dinner set she used to entertain her guests with was hidden somewhere in the estate. This ‘treasure’ was never found. Her relatives only found was old fish lines, newspaper clippings about her daughter and husband, a lock of baby’s’ hair and a suit of woolen underwear. found. Today, the house that Sarah Winchester built is a California Historic Landmark, and is registered with the National Park Service as “a large, odd dwelling with an unknown number of rooms”. Nobody ever knows how many rooms there are in this WEIRD estate. No solid-gold plates were ever April Fools by Maranda and Taylor Oh, my gosh! I can’t believe that you forgot your best friend’s birthday again! April Fools! April fools day is a day where you play pranks on random people. Although, it could be anybody that you pull these playful pranks on, it almost always ends up being a loved one. Whether that means family or friends! Well, nobody really knows when April Fools Day started, but the most popular theory is that April Fools Day started in France in the 1500’s. April Fools Day traveled the world, and many people in rural areas continued to celebrate the New Year in the spring. These country dwellers became known as "April foolers," this is how the story goes. Although, there aren’t many different ways that people around the world celebrate Aprils fools day, there are different things that you could do. One way that you could prank someone is by switching either the contents of a container or changing the labels on the bottles. That way when they go to eat or use the object(s) in the container they would end up using the wrong thing. Another way that you prank someone is you could put a motor in the toilet paper roll. Then, when someone goes to use the toilet paper, for whatever reason, and they try to tear it off, the motor would kick in and then toilet paper would all of the sudden go everywhere! Lastly, this is an unusual way that you could prank someone. First, get a bunch of your friends together and get them in on the “secret” that you are “moving” to a new town. Make up a random reason for it. For example, you could say that your mom is getting a promotion in her job and you have to move because of it. Then, splash water on your guys’ eyes and that will make them look red as if you had been crying. Then drop subtle hints and then when they notice tell them you’re moving. Then you say April fools after you’ve kept it going for a little while and…ECT… Track and Field By Abby and Marissa The history of Track and field traces back to the earliest of times. People have been walking, running, and throwing since the beginning of man. Track and field is a competitive sport consisting of mainly running, jumping, and throwing. Track and field events are normally individual sports, with the exception of the relay. Track and field events are separated into three categories: track, field, and combined events. Track events involve running for certain distances, and in the case of hurdling and steeplechase events, obstacles may be placed on the track. There are also relay races where teams of athletes run and pass a baton to their team member. The sport of track and field has its roots in human prehistory. Track and field-style events are among the oldest of all sporting competitions, as running, jumping and throwing are natural forms of the human expression. The first recorded Track and Field games were at the Ancient Olympic Games. At first, the Games only had one event; the stade race, which was between 590 and 790 feet long. Later on, the diaulos, the dolichos, and the hoplitodromos races were added. It wasn’t until the eighteen hundreds that Track and field began to take its roots. Elementary schools and Universities began to include Track and Field activities. It began to modernize around the time of the first modern day Olympic Games in 1896. The modern events take place in a 400 meter track. Track and Field history has seen a growth involving running surfaces, running shoes, and types of races. The sport continues to grow and is highlighted by the runners in the Olympics every 4 years. The Bite in the Apple by Beau This is a repot about a company that has become very popular, not only in our own country, but others as well. Apple Company’s history is interesting and important.b Apple was founded by two people, known as Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. These two men had a common idea, to build a device that mankind could use for instant messaging on a machine other than a phone. So, they came up with the idea of a computer. A monitor that can display things such as instant messages, e-mail, and surf the internet. Steven Paul Jobs was the co-CEO of Apple products. He was born in San Francisco, California on February 24, 1955. His mother was named Joanne Carole Steve went to school like most other kids and made friends with a man named, Bill Fernandez. Bill introduced Steve to an older computer whiz named Steve Wozniak, known as Woz. In 1969, Woz and Fernandez started to build a small computer board they named the Cream Soda Computer. Steven Graduated High School and went to Reed College in Portland, Oregon, but he dropped out. He and Woz worked together later on to build the Apple computer. Steve died of Metastatic Insulinoma. Today, Apple companies are still run by Steve Wozniak. Apple’s headquarters can be found at Apple campus, 1 Infinite Loop, in Cupertino, California. These days, Woz, the now CEO, still comes up with these brilliant ideas that once influenced Steve Jobs.
